  • Pomegranate, a small tree originating in Orient, belongs to Punicaceae family. The seeds contain an oil of which about 80% is rare trans 18 carbon fatty acid (punicic acid), and have highest botanical concentration of a sex steroid, estrone. Pharmacological properties of pomegranate extract have been studied, with anti-microbial, anti-parasitic, anti-viral, and anti-cancer effects. (omitted)

  • Saponin isolated from Sapindus mukorossi Gaertn has been shown to contain a strong anti-inflammatory activity. In this study, several pharmacological properties such as acute toxicity, local irritation and hemolytic activity of Sapindus saponin and its genin component, hederagenirl, were examined. The acute toxicity of Sapindus saponin was very low. Estimated from the LD$_{50}$ values, it showed much weaker toxicity in oral administration than in intraperitoneal injection. Hederagenin gave a very high LD$_{50}$ value even in intraperitoneal injection. Sapindus saponin showed a potent local irritation after topical application, whereas hederagenin did a very weak local irritation. Sapindus saponin also gave a high hemolytic activity.

  • There have been various inflammatory skin disorders in humans including atopic dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis. Although some drugs have been used for these disorders, there is an urgent need for safer and more effective topical anti-inflammatory agents. Plant flavonoids possess anti-inflammatory activity and some of them have multiple pharmacological mechanisms, inhibition of eicosanoid metabolizing enzymes, histamine release and/or down-regulation of pro inflammatory gene expression. These properties of flavonoids may be suitable for treating chronic skin inflammatory disorders. Especially, wogonin, some prenylated flavonoids and biflavonoids have a strong potential as new anti-inflammatory agents by topical application.

  • Because of the differences in pharmacological properties between enantiomers of chiral acidic non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in human body. accurate determinations of their optical purities have been in great need. An efficient capillary electrophoretic (CE) profiling method was developed for the enantioseparation of NSAIDs. Capillary electrophoretic conditions were optimized using TM$\beta$-cyclodextrin as the chiral selectors under MES buffer. (omitted)

  • Polyphenolic compounds have been reported to exhibit a wide range of pharmacological properties. In this study. we investigated the hepatoprotective effect of skin and seed of grape which contain abundant polyphenol compounds on dimethylnitrosamine(DMN)-induced liver damage in rats. Ingestion of skin and seed of grape (10% diet, daily for 4 weeks) into the DMN-treated rats remarkably prevented the elevation of serum alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase and alkaline phosphatase, and bilirubin levels. • Proanthocyanidins, one of the major natural polyphenolic compounds of grape has been reported to exhibit a wide range of pharmacological properties. In this study, we investigated the hepatoprotective effect of proanthocyanidins on the dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced liver damage in rats. Oral administration of proanthocyanidins (20, 50mg/kg daily for 4 weeks) into the DMN-treated rats remarkably prevented the elevation of serum alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase and alkaline phosphatase, and bilirubin levels. • Santalum album Linn. [Family: Santalaceae] is commonly known as white sandalwood, sandal safaid and safed chandan. It is one of the most valuable trees and second costliest wood in the world. Sandalwood and its oil is extensively used in the Unani and other traditional systems of medicine as it has blood purifier, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, exhilarant, cardiotonic, antiseptic, nervine tonic and expectorant properties. It is used in skin, cardiac, liver, gastrointestinal, respiratory, integument and urogenital disorders. These uses are supported and proven by many in vitro or in vivo studies. The proven pharmacological activities of S. album are antimicrobial, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic and anti-fatigue. The research has proven that sandal oil or its constituents have anti-microbial activity. Sandalwood oil showed skin cancer preventive effect in mice and its constituent alpha santalol showed the anticancer property. The methanolic extract of wood was confirmed for antioxidant, free radical scavenging, analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities. ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ santalols present in sandal oil showed sedative effects. Sandalwood tea had a significant effect on heart muscles of frog and showed increased myocardial contractility. Its oil showed significant changes in hepatic xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes. Sandalwood oil and its major constituents showed less acute oral and dermal toxicity in laboratory animals. Hence, the aforementioned studies justify the uses of sandalwood and its oil mentioned in the classical Unani literature. However, further clinical trials are suggested to confirm its efficacy and safety in humans.

  • CJ-50005 is a hepatitis A vaccine which is prepared by formalin inactivation of the HM175 virus cultured in human diploid MRC-5 cells. The general pharmacological properties of CJ-50005 were evaluated in various animals and in vitor system. CJ-50005 at the doses of 0.025, 0.25 and 0.75 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg, i.m. had no effect on general behavior in mice, chemo- and electro-convulsions in mice, writhing syndrome induced by acetic acid in mice, the barbital sleeping time in mice, body temperature in rats, charcoal meal propulsion in mice and urine and electrolytes excretion in rats. In anesthetized dogs, CJ-50005(0.25 and 0.75 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg, i.v) did not alter the respiratory rate, blood pressure, heart rate, femoral blood flow and ECG. In in vitro experiment, CJ-50005 at the concentration up to 0.02 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml did not produce any changes in the contractions of the isolated ileum of guinea pigs caused by acetylcholine, histamine or $BaCl_2$. Since these pharmacological effects of CJ-50005 were observed at dose much greater than those in clinical use (approximately 0.025 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg, i.m.), it is likely that this vaccine may be relatively free of undesirable effects in clinical practice.

  • Aconitum Heterophyllum (A. Heterophyllum) is an indigenous medicinal plant of India and belongs to the family Ranunculaceae. A. Heterophyllum is known to possess a number of therapeutic effects. For very ancient times, this plant has been used in some formulations in the traditional healing system of India, i.e., Ayurveda. It is reported to have use in treating patients with urinary infections, diarrhea, and inflammation. It also has been used as an expectorant and for the promotion of hepatoprotective activity. The chemical studies of the plant have revealed that various parts of the plant contain alkaloids, carbohydrates, proteins and amino acids, saponins, glycosides, quinones, flavonoids, terpenoids, etc. In the present study, a comprehensive phytochemistry and pharmacognosy, as well as the medicinal properties, of A. Heterophyllum are discussed. Scientific information on the plant was collected from various sources, such as electronic sources (Google scholar, Pubmed) and some old classical text books of Ayurveda and Ethnopharmacology. The study also presents a review of the literature on A. Heterophyllum, as well as the primary pharmacological and other important findings on this medicine. This review article should provide useful information to and be a valuable tool for new researchers who are initiating studies on the plant A. Heterophyllum.
