Background: Styrene is one of the aromatic compounds used in acetonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) producing petrochemicals, which has an impact on health of workers. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the health risks of styrene emitted from the petrochemical industry in Iran. Methods: Air samples were collected based on NIOSH 1501 method. The samples were analyzed by the Varian-cp3800 gas chromatograph. Finally, risk levels of styrene's health effects on employees were assessed by the quantitative method of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and the semiquantitative way by the Singapore Occupational Safety and Health Association. Results: Based on the results, the employees had the highest average exposure to styrene vapors (4.06 × 10-1mg.(kg - day)-1) in the polybutadiene latex (PBL) unit. Therefore, the most top predictors of cancer and non-cancer risk were 2.3×10-4 and 7.26 × 10-1, respectively. Given that the lowest average exposure (1.5 × 10-2mg.(kg - day)-1) was in the dryer unit, the prediction showed a moderate risk of cancer (0.8 × 10-6) and non-cancer (2.3 × 10-3) for the employees. The EPA method also predicted that there would be a definite cancer risk in 16% and a probable risk in 76% of exposures. However, according to the semiquantitative approach, the rate of risk was at the "low" level for all staff. The results showed that there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) between the units in exposure and health risk of styrene (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Given the high risk of styrene's health effects, appropriate control measures are required to reduce the exposure level.
Recently, due to global warming, the trend shows an increase in number of lightning strikes which increase risk regarding industry infrastructures. Especially in case where the lightning strikes infrastructures including refinery, petorchemical plant facilities or storage tanks, it can cause power failures, electrical machine malfunction and damage which can lead to fire explosion and multiple calamities. Therefore, detailed case studies must be conducted through a systematic research regarding lightning strike accidents in order to understand its mechanism and devise preventive measures. This paper aims to study cases of explosion regarding waste water storage tanks in refineries and petrochemical plants in order to analyze its root cause and provide preventive measures for avoiding lightning related incidents.

Petrochemical industry complex in Korea always has high riskiness due to explosive and inflammable gases. To prevent these explosion, most facility of petrochemical industry complex requires the performance of explosive proof. The control panel, which is used as explosive proof, has been used the air injection method by manually from outside to constantly keep the temperature and pressure between inside and outside of the panel. In this paper, we propose the automatic temperature controller, which performs automatic heating and cooling according to temperature inside the panel in order to control temperature automatically.
Process safety incidents and loss events can be prevented if we identify and adequately take measures on process safety incident precursors in a timely manner. If we look into and take action against the process safety hazard factors causing the incident in the refinery and petrochemical plant, major process safety incidents can be prevented through eliminating or decreasing hazardous factors. We conducted a survey for the major process safety incident precursor to look specifically into the potential process safety hazardous factors of refineries and petrochemical plants in the Yeosu chemical complex. A self-assessment checklist, which was published by Center for Chemical Process Safety "Recognizing catastrophic incident warning signs in the process industry" on major incidents warning sign, was used for the survey. Through this survey, the major process safety incident leading indicators in the process industry were found by process safety management elements, and each site and/or facility can use these leading indicators for activities for process safety incident prevention. In addition, we proposed action items required to eliminate the root cause of those process safety incident leading indicators.
In this paper, the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) based on ZigBee technology was devised and developed. Wireless communication was applied to petrochemical domain, like other industries. And sensor network of IEEE 802.15.4 protocol stack diagram was described. Then, by analyzing the protocol, the software systems included the communication Protocol and point-to-point network were implemented with Freescale Semiconductor's product MC13192-SARD DSK board. After that, the performance of this design system was evaluated, and finally, by using PC Graphic User Interface (GUI) and IDE CW08 V3.1 programming tool, the real time communication data and the curve function were displayed.

Volatile organic compounds (VOC) cause air pollution problem and deterioration of atmosphere of petrochemical and fine chemical plants. Hybrid process of membrane and cold-condensation were developed and it effectively removed and recycled the VOC. Operation parameters of the process were optimized to attain hish removal and recycle of VOC. Composite membranes for organic vapor separation were developed in this work by PDMS coating and plasma polymerization on polypropylene and polysulfone support membranes. PDMS and various silicone monomers were tested for several organic vapors such as benzene, toluene, TCE, and HCFC, which are produced in petrochemical and fine chemical industry and causes air pollution problems if are released to atmosphere. Composite membranes prepared in this work showed appreciable performance in terms of organic vapor removal and reuse. Performance variation of the membranes was correlated with their surface characteristics.
As the stock market is affected by various circumstances including economic and political variables, predicting the stock market is considered a still open problem. When combined with corporate financial statement data analysis, which is used as fundamental analysis, and technical analysis with a short data generation cycle, there is a problem that the time domain does not match. Our proposed method, LSTE the operating profit and market outlook of a petrochemical company and estimates the sales and operating profit of the company, it was possible to solve the above-mentioned problems and improve the accuracy of stock price prediction. Extensive experiments on real-world stock data show that our method outperforms the 8.58% relative improvements on average w.r.t. accuracy.

It is about time for Korean plant engineering industry to evaluate what they have achieved in the past and to foresee how this industry will change in the future. Since the IMF infection in the late 1997, Korean engineering industry has become to realize how important it is to formulate plans and solutions in order to be successful in the EPC industry. Korean plant engineering has accomplished remarkable growth in terms of its sales volumes and sizes of petrochemical & refinery plants they have executed, but unfortunately they have not done a nice job of generating sufficient profits. Many Korean engineering companies have carried out million and billion dollars of "projects" where they unfortunately suffered deficits, and as a result, some companies actually went deteriorated and were merged, and acquired by bigger companies. Based on above philosophy, the ten(10) key factors are suggested regarding a proposal for role and mission of chemical engineering professional engineer in plant engineering industry in the 21\\\" century.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of private industry of Chungcheongbuk-do were estimated. GHG emissions were classified by industry and GHG emissions ratio of each industry of Chungcheongbuk-do was found. Characteristics of GHG emissions of Chungcheongbuk-do and GHG mitigation technology were analyzed. To calculate GHG emissions, equations proposed through GHG emissions calculation guidelines published by Korean Energy Agency in 2009 were used. As a result, GHG emissions ratio of cement, semiconductor, paper and petrochemical industry was about 73%, 16%, 5%, and 2% respectively. GHG mitigation technologies of cement, semiconductor and waste were investigated. For cement, amine technology, for semiconductor, scrubber system and for waste, land fill gas utilization were analyzed.
It is widely accepted that the prevention of global warming requires significant reductions in greenhouse gases, particularly CO2 emissions. Although fossil fuel-based power plants account for the majority of CO2 emissions, it is urgent to reduce CO2 emissions in industries that emit large amounts of CO2 such as steel, petrochemical, and oil refining. This paper examines the current status of CO2 emission in the domestic oil refining industry and CO2 emission sources in each unit process in the oil refining industry. Focusing on the previously developed CO2 capture process, cases and applicability of greenhouse gas reduction in FCC and hydrogen manufacturing processes, which are major processes constituting the oil refining industry, are reviewed.
