  • A new speices, Potentilla gageodoensis M. Kim found in Is. Gageodo, Jeollanamdo Province, Korea, is firstly named and described. This species is similar to its related species P. fragarioides in having several characteristics like pinnately compound leaves, pubescent leaf blades and leaf petioles, different leaflets size, absent stolons, etc., but is distinct from P. fragarioides which has thin leaf textures, 7-13 leaflets, elliptic terminal leaflets, small petal size, and ciliate leaflet margin by having thick leaf textures, 5 leaflets, broadly ovate terminal leaflets, large petal size, and densely white ciliate leaflet margin.

  • A new species, Pseudostellaria baekdusanensis M. Kim (Caryophyllaceae), has been named and described from Mt. Baekdu of the Korean peninsula. Pseudostellaria baekdusanensis shares several characteristics (same size leaves, axillary or terminal flowers, emaginate petals, etc.) with its related species P. japonica (Korshinsky) Pax. It is, however, distinct from P. japonica which have large plant (25-35 cm), leaf blade margins and midveins with long hairs, shallow emaginate petal apex, (2) 3 styles, and cleistogamic flowers by having small plants (9-13 cm), leaf blade basal margins with long hairs, deep emaginate petal apex, 2 styles, and non-cleistogamic flowers.

  • The rose petal tissue biosensor has been constructed by immobilizing New carina rose tissue. Optimum conditions for the determination of urea were investigated using this sensor. Selectivity and life time of this sensor were also obtained. As a result, the biosensor showed the optimum response characteristics in 0.20M phosphate buffer solution at pH 8.0, $37^{\circ}C$ and 50mg of tissue amounts. This sensor was linear from $9.0{\times}10^{-5}$ to $4.0{\times}10^{-3}M$ urea with a slope of 42mV/decade. The limit of detection and response time are $7.0{\times}10^{-5}M$ and 17~19 min.

  • An efficient plant regeneration protocol is developed for a standard-type chrysanthemum. When petal segments derived from flower buds (4 or 8cm in diameter) were used as the culture material, the highest shoot regeneration frequency (96%) was obtained on a Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L IAA, 2 mg/L BA, 3% sucrose, and a 0.8% agar. Pre-culturing the explants under dark conditions for 14 days produced better results for the shoot regeneration frequency than the explants cultured under a continuous 16 h photoperiod ($40{\mu}molm^{-2}s^{-1}$). The shoot regeneration frequency ranged from 19.0% for the Shinmato cultivar to 89.1% for the Baeksun cultivar. Activated charcoal (0.2%) enhanced the root formation of the regenerated shoots in a hormone-free MS medium. The rooted plantlets were acclimatized and successfully established in a greenhouse.

  • This study investigated the ecological characteristics of Frankliniella occidentalis on four horticultural crops. On red pepper leaves, larval developmental period and survival rate of F. occidentalis were 6.4 days and 67%, respectively. While adult female lived longer on cucumber leaves as long as 16 days, on Petal lived 8.1 days. F. occidentalis adult female preferred tomato to eggplant, cucumber and red pepper, and higher number of hatched larva were from leaves of middle part of egg-plant compared with those from other parts. F. occidentalis adult female fed preferably on petal compared with leaves and Petals of eggplant, and among petals of four tested plants, the most preference was those of red pepper.

  • To understand the effect of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on floral senescence in Hibiscus syriacus L., we have investigated change in relative water potential, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, H_2O_2 content and the activity of antioxidative enzymes in the petals during flower opening and senescence. Hibiscus flowers were achieved full bloom at early morning and started to in-rolling and showed petal in-rolling over than 50% at 24 h and 36 h after full bloom, respectively. The flower was a decrease in fresh weight by 30% and showed water loss with floral senescence. MDA content and activity of antioxidative enzymes such as APX, GR and CAT were showed no significant change until 36 h after full bloom. In the flower 48 h after full bloom that showed complete petal in-rolling and wilting, however, activity of antioxidative enzymes and H_2O_2 content was greatly increased as compared with 0 h after full bloom. These results suggest that reactive oxygen species are related to accelerating the later senescence more than inducing the early senescence during Hibiscus flower senescence.

  • Mixing performance between fuel and oxidizer is a significant parameter of combustion efficiency and stability in an air-turbo ramjet combustor. Two types of petal mixer were experimented to research the mixing performance. Mixing performance and fuel distribution images were obtained for petal mixers. Planar laser-induced fluorescence(PLIF) was used to obtain 2-D fuel distribution. The obtained images were processed in order to make use of the image information to a quantitative level. The results of analyzing the fluorescence images could be useful to find better mixing performance between mixers.
