The purpose of this paper is to investigate domestic pesticides on their mutagenecity through a literature review on mutagenecities of chemical compounds : and to report the results of experimental tests on the mutagenecity of other pesticides for which mutagenecity had not been previously demonstrated. For the experiments on mutagenecity, Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium TA 100 was performed. Subjects of this research were 167 kinds of pesticides utilized in Korea during the last 10 years from 1973 to 1982. The results were as follows : 1) The total amount of pesticide which was consumed in Korea during the past ten years(1973-1982) was 113,038tons. The average ingredient amount utilized per hectare of areble land in 1982 was 6.6kg. 2) Among mutagenic pesticides, it was found that there were 11 kinds of insecticides, 6 kinds of fungicides and 3 kinds of herbicides. The total amount of these mutagenic pesticide used during the past 10 years is as follows: 8,911 tons of insecticides; 2,708tons of fungicides; and 14,087 tons of herbicides. 3) For the regulation and restriction on the use of toxic pesticides, the mutagenecities of ingredient chemicals should be considered. 4) The three kinds of herbicides and two kinds of growth regulators whose mutagenecity was not mentioned in the literature review, were all found to be negative in the mutagenecity test using Salmonella typhimurium TA 100.

This study surveyed the selling, buying, usage, selection and spraying frequency of pesticides on apple orchards in Geochang, Gyeongsangnam-do province from 2012 to 2013 and found that the fungicides, insecticides and acaricides were sprayed $13.9{\pm}3.5$, $12.6{\pm}3.2$, and $2.6{\pm}1.3$ times per year, respectively. Fungicides were applied mainly to control for Diplocarpon mali, Colletotrichum gloeosporoides and Alternaria mali, whereas insecticides were sprayed mostly to control Grapholita molesta, Carposina sasakii insects. Dealers sold pesticides without monitoring of the pests in the apple orchards, and also sometimes sold pesticides which are non-registered for apple. Most of the farmers were highly relied on dealers' recommendations to choosing the brand product. Relating on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) on apple orchards in Geochang, residual active ingredient of frequently sprayed fungicides, insecticides, and acaricides were analyzed. Most applications of the fungicides, insecticides and acaricides were well corresponded with FAO's recommendations. For production of safe food and use of pesticides, it is requested to develope control calender and consideration of training program for farmers. The regional characteristics and environmental situation of the farm also should be considered.

Pest control is required for protecting the food supply and for controlling disease vectors. Unfortunately, there is no perfectly safe form of pest control. Pesticides are commonly used for pest control. Pesticides are defined under the US Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act(FIFRA) as any substance or mixture of substances intended to prevent, destroy, repel, or mitigate pests, and any substance or mixture of substances intended for use as a plant regulator, defoliant, or dessicant(40 CFR Part 152). Currently in the United States, there are 890 active ingredients registered as pesticides. Approximately one billion pounds of active ingredient are used in the US per year. Unlike most chemicals(anti-neoplastic and anti-micobial medications are the principal exceptions), pesticides are specifically designed to kill and cause harm. Because society allows these chemicals to be disseminated into the environment, it is important to monitor the health effects associated with these releases. This represents an important justification for establishing and maintaining surveillance systems for acute pesticide-related illness and injury. A comprehensive, national surveillance system for acute pesticide-related illness and injury does not currently exist in the US. Although the United States has several surveillance systems for this condition, none provide a complete understanding of the problem of acute pesticide-related illness and injury. The Toxic Exposure Surveillance System(TESS) and Bureau of Labor Statisitics(BLS) are useful for assessing magnitude and trends. The state-based surveillance systems are more useful for timely identification of outbreaks and emerging problems. Efforts are underway to increase the number of states that conduct surveillance, and to broaden the use of the standardized case definition to facilitate aggregation of data across states. Through such efforts, a comprehensive, national surveillance system may be attainable.
In order to minimize harmful side effects, extend weed control performance, and control the releasing rate of the active ingredient, dicamba controlled release granular formulations were prepared with starch as matrix. Leaching, soil residue, and volatilization of the granules were compared with dicamba soluble concentrate formulation (SL). Leaching of dicamba through the soil applied with the granules could be reduced more than 50% as compared with that of dicamba SL. The half life of dicamba in loamy soil treated with the granules was 50 to 51 days, while that in sand loamy soil was 50 to 58 days. Whereas, the half life of dicamba in loamy and sand loamy soil applied with dicamba SL was 24 and 22 days, respectively. Volatilization of dicamba from the granules was 10 times less than that of dicamba SL.
An investigation in search of the best oxidizing agent for smoke generators using rice chaff as a combustible carrier was carried out. Smoke rods formulated with active ingredients (AIs) such as inorganic oxidizing agents, glue, and powdered rice chaff, showed constant and high burning rate and high smoking rate on 11 kinds of pesticides. Sodium chlorate was the most suitable oxidizing agent for smoke rod. Even though the sodium chlorate content of the formulation showing the highest smoking rate of AI was variable to pesticides, the smoking rate appeared to increase as the burning rate increased. Active ingredients in smoke generator using rice chaff as a combustible carrier were stable for 60 days when stored at $50^{\circ}C$. An apparatus designed for smoke trapping was useful to collect smoked active ingredients.
Strawberries are one of the main commodities in Korea and have been exported over 40 million dollar. Because the strawberry cultivation using hydroponics has increased, treatment of pesticide by drenching draw interest recently. However, detailed researches for drenching treatment of pesticide are limited, which results in difficulties in proper pesticide applications in agricultural fields. To activate use of drenching and improve safety in agricultural products, In this study, time-dependent residual characteristic of pesticides were compared with between different applications of pesticides in strawberries. The characteristics of azoxystrobin, prochloraz and thiamethoxam were investigated with drenching treatment at different applications: the time of treatment, concentration etc. at hydroponic cultivation for 40 days. Azoxystrobin and prochloraz were not detected at 14 day after application. Thiamethoxam was detected from 0.02 to 0.85 mg/kg. Crop uptake of pesticides was strongly affected with octanol-water partition coefficient and solubility in water. Residual amount in crops are highly dependent on the concentration of active ingredient of pesticides.
In order to study the effect of formulation type on the burning characteristics of smoke generator, fenarimol smoke generators containing the powdered rice chaff as a combustible carrier were prepared by molding the kneaded mixtures into various shapes. Smoke generators containing wood flour as a combustible carrier were also prepared and compared with smoke generators containing rice chaff. All the fenarimol smoke generators moulded into powders, granules, and rods continuously burned out when the sodium chlorate content exceeded 11%. Regardless of their types, the highest smoking rate of fenarimol was observed with more than 13% of sodium chlorate. The smoking rate of active ingredient followed with the increasing order of powder (64.5%) < granule (78.4%) < rod (90.9%). The smoke rod was robust, easy to ignite, and showed the highest smoking rate among the tested formulations. When the mixture of wood flour and anti-flame agent was used as a combustible carrier, the burning rate was so slow that wood flour formulation seemed to be more suitable to a slow-burning fumigant rather than smoke generator.

In order to calculate the processing and reduction factor between fresh and dry Welsh onion which was widely used as a dried agricultural ingredient of food in Korea. 7 pesticides such as pyridalyl, kresoxim-methyl, spinosad, flufenoxuron, difenoconazole, metconazole, and tebufenozide were tested. After 2 sites field trial conducted and measured water contents by drying at $60^{\circ}C$ and analyzed the pesticide residue. Water contents of fresh and dried Welsh onion are 89.2 and 10.2% respectively. Averages of processing factor showed 7.24 of pyridalyl, 2.85 of kresoxim-methyl, 7.43 of spinosad, 3.17 of flufenoxuron, 4.38 of difenoconazole, 2.40 of metconazole and 8.13 of tebufenozide into 2 field samples. Averages of Reduction factor showed 0.87 of pyridalyl, 0.35 of kresoxim-methyl, 0.88 of spinosad, 0.38 of flufenoxuron, 0.52 of difenoconazole, 0.29 of metconazole and 0.98 of tebufenozide. Residual amounts of pesticides in/on fresh Welsh onion reduced during drying process.
In this study, we have developed the database of safety and health information for pesticide active ingredients used in Korea. There were 1,283 pesticide items among which 296 were found to be out of use in current. A total of 349 pesticide ingredients were being used in Korea. The database consists of 32 types of information including chemical characteristics, acute toxicity, chronic toxicity (carcinogenic and reproductive toxicity), specific symptoms by exposure route and first aid. When pesticide ingredients were assessed in terms of key properties such as color, odor, acute toxicity, carcinogenic and reproductive toxicity, they were white, colorless and odorless, in general. When ingredients were classified by category of acute toxicity, 'Non-hazardous' represented 29%, followed by 'Slightly hazardous' at 16%, 'Moderately hazardous' at 14%, 'Highly hazardous' at 5%, and 'Extremely hazardous' at 2%. 85 out of 349, or 24% of ingredients were found to be possibly carcinogenic to human. This database is expected to provide an easy access for farmers, agriculture supervisors, researchers and consumers, and it can ultimately be used as basic data on farmer's safety and health.
The technicals of KC-7079, isoprothiolane, perfluidone and tricyclazole were granulated with a mixture of inorganic carrier and oil-soluble binder, that is, stearly alcohol or ethyl cellulose. The concentration of the released active ingredient from the granules was analyzed at several days intervals after immersion of these granules in water at $25^{\circ}C$. At the content of stearyl alcohol less than $80g\;kg^{-1}$, the granule kneaded with stearyl alcohol mixture and water disintegrated in water. But the granule kneaded with methanol disintegrated in water at the content of stearyl alcohol less than $30g\;kg^{-1}$. The less the KC-7079-stearyl alcohol granule disintegrated, the slower the release rate of KC-7079 was. No matter how was increased the stearyl alcohol content, the release rate of KC-7079 granule which did not disintegrate was not significantly changed. The sustained releasing effect of the granules was little in the other three pesticides of which the water solubility was higher than of KC-7079(21 ppm). The granule made of ethyl cellulose did not disintegrate even at $5g\;kg^{-1}$ of ethyl cellulose. With the increase of ethyl cellulose content and the decrease of active ingredient in the granules, the sustaining effect of the granules on releasing acitive ingredient was increased. The lower the water solubility of pesticide was, the release rate tended to be sustained except perfluidone.
