  • This study checks if the PITR (Person in the Rain) test can diagnose the stress caused by school-work for middle school students, in that the PITR responses correlates with the degree of stress. The subjects in the study are 483 middle school thirdgraders from 8 middle schools in Daegu city. Research tools used are an Academic Stress Scale and a PITR test. For data analysis is adopted with t-test and Chi-square test. The results from the study are as follows. First, the stress of middle students scores 2.47/4 that means that the school stress is average, and there is no gender difference in scores. Second, PITR test shows that boys draw more rain than girls, straight rain with stronger wind, hide face more, no good facial expressions more often than girls. Girls on the contrary show more stable lines, bigger puddles, place protections more appropriately. Third, those with higher academic stress use more unstable strokes, less number of or insufficient direct protections than those with less academic stress, and draw indirect protection such as umbrellas before rain or clouds. The study concludes that a PITR test can be useful in diagnosing the academic stress of middle school students.

  • Climate adaptation strategies for water utilities including 16 water treatment plants(WTPs) in Jeju were investigated. Drought, heat wave, and heavy rain were among the most significant climate factors affecting water utilities in Jeju. Heat wave increases water temperature, which in turn increases the concentration of algae, color, and odor materials. Some adaption strategies for the heat wave can be strengthening water monitoring and introducing advanced water treatments. Heavy rain increases raw water turbidity in surface water. The 7 WTPs that take raw water from streams or springs had a maximum turbidity of less than 50 NTU under heavy rain. However, due to concerns of turbidity spike in treated water, some WTPs discontinued intaking raw water when raw water turbidity increased more than 2 NTU. They instead received treated water from other WTPs which took groundwater for water supply. This happens because of the low skills of employees. Thus, there needs to be an increase in operator competency and upgrade of water facilities for the adaption of heavy rain. To improve adaption for the drought, there should be an increase in the capacity of intake facilities of surface water as well as a decrease in water loss. In addition, water consumption per person should be decreased.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mental health status, stress, coping ability, and coping strategies of college students. Methods: The questionnaires were handed out to 162 college students in the Gyeonggi province. Data was collected using the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) scale of the 90 items, the 'Person in the Rain' drawing test, and the 20-item coping strategies questions. Results: 17.3% of the respondents were belonged to the groups of abnormal or abnormal tendency in the mental health status according to the Global Severity Index (GSI) scores. The clinical/border groups were more commonly used in the 'emotion-focused' coping strategies compared to the normal group. This difference was also statistically significant. Both coping resource and coping ability were significantly associated with the mental health status. Conclusions: These findings suggest that future intervention for effective coping strategies should be carefully designed to promote better mental health among college students. It is also important to detect problematic and weak student's behaviors in the early stages.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of applying a group art therapy program on self-esteem and stress for adolescents who are maladjusted to school. The subjects of this study were 6 school maladjusted adolescents enrolled in the second year of B middle school in A region, and the period was from May 12 to June 9, 2021, twice a week, for a total of 10 sessions of 60 minutes each. As a research tool, the Self-Esteem Scale(SEI) and the Person-In-The-Rain(PITR) were examined to observe the students. For data analysis, Wilcoxon test was conducted to examine the change in self-esteem, and the Person-In-The-Rain(PITR) was qualitatively analyzed to observe stress by two art therapists. The results of this study were first, that the group art therapy program had a significant effect on improving the self-esteem of adolescents and second, the group art therapy program was effective in reducing the stress. In conclusion, group art therapy can be seen to help improve self-esteem and reduce stress in school maladjusted adolescents.

  • Stress has become one of the largest health risk to shorten the life time of health. Accordingly, in order to increase the life time of health, stress relief can be very important. Many social expenses and economic commitment have been inputted for this purpose, but their effectiveness compared to the current situation is not very high. In this paper, we carried out an identification work of rain sound which is similar to the white noise that can stabilize the body and mind of the person by analyzing the variations of 3rd formant frequency bandwidth. Also, for relieving stress, the sounds of rain that is easily accessible at a relatively among the sounds of nature instead of consuming a lot of money and time were selected for solving these problems. In addition, we identified the effectiveness of the stress relief about the sound of rain and research on whether there is a difference between men and women in their 20's or not was performed. Finally, we discussed the personal - adjusted rain making to maximize the effectiveness of stress relief.

  • A study is made on the chest pain in the perspective of Hyungsang medicine. The following are the conclusions produced by the examination on the clinical cases of chest pain. Excessive atmospheric influences (wind, rain, cold and summer heat) are the exogenous causes of chest pain. The endogenous causes are diet, dwelling, sexual life and emotions. Persons of bird type are attacked by the chest pain because of emotional depressions. Those of running animal type get sick of chest pain when wood checks earth. Those of turtle type are a afflicted with chest pain due to depression and stagnation of Ki. Those of fish type suffer from chest pain when the ministerial fire of the liver and kidney becomes hyperactive. Chest pain is causes by leakage of Jung for the Jung kwa person, by stagnation of Ki for the Ki kwa person, by flaming fire due to deficiency of Yim for the Shin kwa person and Dy failure of water and fire in complementing each other for the Hyul kwa person. Chest pain often occurs to persons with the following characteristics upward nose, Dig eyes, chapped lips, pronounced foot of nose, red or yellow complexion, frowning face and wrinkles on the nasal radix. Among the six meridian types, chest pain is often found in the persons of Yangmyung and Taeum meridians. Women suffer from chest pain more often than men because breast is a center of life to her.

  • Objective: To report a case of a patient with a psychosomatic disorder who complained of hyperventilation and was treated with oriental medical treatments and emotional freedom techniques (EFTs). Methods: The patient was diagnosed as having a psychosomatic disorder through an interview and several psychological tests, such as the house-tree-person (HTP) and the person in the rain (PITR) tests. We treated the patient with oriental medical treatments that included herbal medications, western medications, moxibustion, cupping, and EFT. Results: After the treatments, the clinical symptoms of the patient were improved. Conclusions: Oriental medical treatments and EFT may be effective treatments for psychosomatic disorders.

  • A rain water pumping station is a structural countermeasure to inland flooding of domestic water generated in a urban watershed. In this study, the optimal operation water level of the pump with the minimum overflow was determined based on the opinions of the person in charge of the operation of the rain water pump station. A GA (Genetic Algorithm), which is an optimization technique, was used to estimate the optimal operation water level of the rain water pump station and was linked with SWMM (Ver.5.1) DLL, which is a rainfall-runoff model of an urban watershed. Considering the time required to maximize the efficiency of the pump, the optimal operating water level was estimated. As a result, the overall water level decreased at a lower operating water level than the existing water level. For most pumps, the lowest operating water level was selected for the operating range of each pump unit. The operation of the initial pump could reduce the amount of overflow, and there was no change in the overflow reduction, even after changing the operation condition of the pump. Internal water flooding reduction was calculated to be 1%~2%, and the overflow occurring in the downstream area was reduced. The operating point of the pump was judged to be an effective operation from a mechanical and practical point of view. A consideration of the operating conditions of the pump in future, will be helpful for improving the efficiency of the pump and to reducing inland flooding.
