  • Parallel genetic algorithms are particularly easy to implement and promise substantial gains in performance. Its basic idea is to keep several subpopulations that are processed by genetic algorithms. Furthermore, a migration mechanism produces a chromosome exchange between subpopulation. In this paper, a new selection method based on non-linear fitness assignment presented. The use of proposed ranking selection permits higher local exploitation search, where the diversity of populations is structure. Experimental results show that the relation between local-global search balance and the probabilities of reaching a desired solution.

  • In this paper a self-tuning modified skyhook control for the semi-active suspension systems is investigated. The damping force generation mechanism is modeled We consider a 2 DOF time-varying quarter car model that permits parameter variations of the sprung mass and suspension spring coefficient. The modified skyhook control algorithm proposed in this paper requires only the measurement of body acceleration. The absolute velocity of the sprung mass and the relative velocity of the suspension deflection are estimated by using integral filters, according to parameter variations. The skyhook gains are designed in such a way that the body acceleration and the dynamic tire force are optimized. An ECU prototype will be discussed

  • This paper develops an algorithm for efficiently computing the intersection points between rays and an object in a simulated radiograph. This algorithm allows interactive calculation of simulated radiographs for very complex parts. It needs a geometric model of a part which is approximated by a bounding surface made up of flat triangular polygons. Since rays have a point source, a perspective transformation is applied to convert the point source problem to one that has parallel rays. This permits to use a scan-line algorithm which utilizes the coherence of the grid of rays for the intersection calculations. The efficiency of the algorithm is shown by comparing compute time of the intersection calculations to a commercial software that computes each ray intersection independently.

  • This work presents a stability analysis of the synchronous state for one-way master-slave time distribution networks with single star topology. Using bifurcation theory, the dynamical behavior of second-order phase-locked loops employed to extract the synchronous state in each node is analyzed in function of the constitutive parameters. Two usual inputs, the step and the ramp phase perturbations, are supposed to appear in the master node and, in each case, the existence and the stability of the synchronous state are studied. For parameter combinations resulting in non-hyperbolic synchronous states the linear approximation does not provide any information, even about the local behavior of the system. In this case, the center manifold theorem permits the construction of an equivalent vector field representing the asymptotic behavior of the original system in a local neighborhood of these points. Thus, the local stability can be determined.

  • The vision system model used for this study involves the six parameters that permits a kind of adaptability in that relationship between the camera space location of manipulable visual cues and the vector of robot joint coordinates is estimated in real time. Also this vision control method requires the number of cameras to transform 2-D camera plane from 3-D physical space, and be used irrespective of location of cameras, if visual cues are displayed in the same camera plane. Thus, this study is to investigate the optimal number of cameras used for the developed vision control system according to the change of the number of cameras. This study is processed in the two ways : a) effectiveness of vision system model b) optimal number of cameras. These results show the evidence of the adaptability of the developed vision control method using the optimal number of cameras.

  • General algorithm is developed for the prediction of internal flow-induced noise. This algorithm is based on the integral formula derived by using the General Green Function, Lighthills acoustic analogy and Curls extension of Lighthills. Novel approach of this algorithm is that the integral formula is so arranged as to predict frequency-domain acoustic signal at any location in a duct by using unsteady flow data in space and time, which can be provided by the Computational Fluid Dynamics Techniques. This semi-analytic model is applied to the prediction of internal aerodynamic noise from a throttle valve in an automotive engine. The predicted noise levels from the throttle valve are compared with actual measurements. This illustrative computation shows that the current method permits generalized predictions of flow noise generated by bluff bodies and turbulence in flow ducts.

  • Among various Power converters, a variable voltage variable frequency (VVVF) three-phase PWM inverter is regarded as most promising power converter due to its capabilities, which permits the control of voltage, frequency and harmonic contents in a single power stage employing only on DC source. As a modulating technique of the PWM inverter, the regular sampling technique has rendered possible the on-line computation and generation of PWM control waveforms with a reasonably high switching frequencies. In this paper, microprocessor based three-phase regular samping PWM inverter with real-time control algorithm and control circuits for driving three phase AC motor has been developed. Harmocic components of PWM waveform were analized theoretically in terms of Bessel function series and then calculated by digital computer and observed with spectrum analyzer.

  • In this paper, we propose a dynamic model of an escalator which can be used to build a design database. The model permits to estimate the forces applied to the structure by calculating three primary types of forces; the torque required to operate the escalator, the reaction forces at part interconnection points, and contact forces between parts. These forces can then be used to calculate dynamic stresses in the structure which is required to estimate the durability of the structure. Result of the computer model are compared with testing results. This simulation model is used to construct a design database. So when we design a new escalator, this design database can be used to make a new simulation model which makes it possible for us to do a Knowledge-Based-Design.

  • In the quality planning phase, the techniques for measuring cost-quality trade-offs are used for the selection of the optimal design specifications when design flexibility permits significant trade-offs to be made. But the product quality is not only depends on the developing cost, but also the time for developing that product. Therefor it is important to seek a methodology for estimating time-cost-quality trade-offs associated with the quality planning projects. This paper is aimed to find a methodology of time-cost-quality trade-offs and to develop a proper algorithm.

  • A gas chromatographic procedure is described which permits seperation and determination of nonvolatile organic acids and higher fatty acids simultaneously in tobacco leaves and cigarette smoke condensate. The transfer rates from cigarettes to main stream smoke were examined for eight of the nonblending cigarettes. Average transfer rates for three varieties tobacco leaves, respectively were linolenic 31 and 62% linoleic 21 and 59% palmitic 29 and 38% malic 4 and 6%.
