  • We have examined the perceptions of 6th grade elementary school students' conceptions on the magnetic fields of a permanent magnet by cognitive style. Students' conceptions on the magnetic fields of permanent magnet after the iron powder experiment are grouped into four models; Partial Distribution Model (PDM), Pole Separation Model (PSM), Homogeneous Distribution Model (HDM), and Field Model (FM). After the experiment to observe the magnetic field of the permanent magnet with compass, the students' conceptions are grouped into three models; Pole Separation Model (PSM), Complex Homogeneous Distribution Model (CHDM), and Field Model (FM). And after the application of the alternative experimental method to observe the magnetic field with only one compass, students' conceptions on magnetic field has been enhanced in both field-dependent and general-cognitive groups of students.

  • The global force and interaction body force density were evaluated in permanent magnets by using the virtual air-gap scheme incorporating the finite-element method. Until now, the virtual air-gap concept has been successfully applied to calculate a contact force and a body force density in soft magnetic materials. These force calculating methods have been called as generalized methods such as the generalized magnetic charge force density method, the generalized magnetizing current force density method, and the generalized Kelvin force density method. For permanent magnets, however, there have been few research works on a contact force and a force density field. Unlike the conventional force calculating methods resulting in surface force densities, the generalized methods are novel methods of evaluating body force density. These generalized methods yield the actual total force, but their distributions have an irregularity, which seems to be random distributions of body force density. Inside permanent magnets, however, a smooth pattern was obtained in the interaction body force density, which represents the interacting force field among magnetic materials. To evaluate the interaction body force density, the intrinsic force density should be withdrawn from the total force density. Several analysis models with permanent magnets were tested to verify the proposed methods evaluating the interaction body force density and the contact force, in which the permanent magnet contacts with a soft magnetic material.

  • This paper presents a uniform analytical model by energy method and Fourier series expansion to analyze detent force in uneven magnetic field for permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM). The model reveals that detent force in long-primary type is mainly influenced by non-ideal distribution of permanent magnet magnetic motive force, while nounified air-gap permeance makes a great impact on detent force of short-primary type. Hence, magnetic field similarity of motor design techniques referring rotary counterpart are adopted. For long-primary type novel method of splitting edge magnets is proposed to reduce end effects force, and optimal widths of edge tooth in short-primary type also verify the effectiveness of magnetic field similarity. The experimental results validate finite element analysis results.

  • The magnetic field variation by the permanent magnet fluctuation positioned on a "Chwan" of wrist according to the movement of radial artery was generated. The clip-type pulsimeter equipped with a Hall device sensing magnetic field pulse movement analyzed the characteristics of pulse wave as output signals. The magnetic field curve and pulse waveform simulated by the finite element method were compared and analyzed with each other. Also, the variation of magnetic field distribution one permanent magnet investigated by the fabrication of clip-type pulsimeter simulator. This result suggests that the clip-type pulsimeter can be used the reproducible and efficacious oriental diagnostic medical instrument.

  • Radioactive Corrosion Products (CRUD) which are generated by the neutron activation of general corrosion products at the nuclear power plant are the major source of occupational radiation exposure. Most of the CRUD has a characteristic of showing strong ferrimagnetisms. Along with the new development and production of permanent magnet (rare earth magnet) which generates much stronger magnetic field than the conventional magnet, new type of magnetic filter that can separate CRUD efficiently and eventually reduce radiation exposure of personnel at nuclear power plant is suggested. This separator consists of inner and outer magnet assemblies, coolant channel and container surrounding the outer magnet assembly. The rotational motion of the inner and outer permanent magnet assemblies surrounding the coolant channel by driving motor system produces moving alternating magnetic fields in the coolant channel. The CRUD can be separated from the coolant by the moving alternating magnetic field. This study describes the results of preliminary experiment performed with the different flow rates of coolant and rotation velocities of magnet assemblies. This new magnetic filter shows better performance results of filtering the magnetite at coolant (water). How rates, rotating velocities of magnet assemblies and particle sizes turn out to be very important design parameters.

  • It is well known that the accurate calculation of the field distribution is essential for the design of electrical machines. The analytical techniques for electromagnetic field can quickly and exactly determine airgap magnetic field distribution in electrical machines. Many analytical techniques have been investigated to predict the magnetic field distribution in PM machines equipped with permanent magnets. Using the analytical technique by transfer relations, D. L. Trumper and K. R. Davey already presented the design and analysis of linear permanent-magnet machines and induction machines, respectively. Using the transfer relations (Melcher's general methodology) to describe electromagnetic phenomena, this paper deals with the analysis on the magnetic field distribution due to PM and winding current, the induced voltage and the static torque characteristics in surface-mounted slotless type permanent magnet machine. The validity of the analysis results is confirmed by finite element (FE) analysis.

  • Magnetic properties of a field cooled YBaCuO superconductor beneath the toroidal permanent magnet was examined by means of improved magneto-balancing method at 77 K. Magnetic flux measurements of a toroidal magnet revealed a concave shaped field distribution with a single minimum and a null field along the axis of the torus at the point where the field reversed. The observed values of both the suspension position and the force exerted upon the superconductor specimen were in good agreement with those calculated from the magnetization curve of the specimen and the intensity of the magnetic field of the used permanent magnet.

In this paper, the Halbach array is utilized to compose the field system. The ferro-magnetic materials of the electric machines cause the fatal energy loses in high frequency. But Halbach any enables to make the various field distribution without ferro-magnetic materials. This paper presents the magnetic characteristics are analyzed by the analytical method and FEM in case that the field system is composed of the Halbach array.

  • In this paper, we introduce a magnetic noise shielding method to reduce the noise effects in permanent magnet based MRI systems. Through FEM electromagnetic analyses, we have shown that the magnetic noise component parallel to the main magnetic field is the major component that makes various artifacts in the images obtained with a permanent magnet based MRI. Based on the FEM analyses, we have developed an active magnetic noise shielding system composed of a magnetic field sensor, compensation coils, and a coil driving system. The shielding system has shown a noise rejection ratio of about 30dB at the frequency below several Hz. We have experimentally verified that the shielding system greatly improves the image quality in a 0.3 Tesla MRI system.
