Periphyton is known to be one of major primary producers for river ecosystem. While the growth of periphyton usually observed on the stone surface in gravel river, the large growth of periphyton is sometimes seen even in sand river with relatively small river discharge. In the present study, field observations and numerical simulations were performed to investigate the growth of periphyton in sand river. In the field observation, the growth of periphyton on fixed sand bed was measured weekly. The results of the field observations show that the large growth of periphyton occurs in sand river until the bed material sands have not moved. An integrated numerical simulation model is presented to describe the growth of periphyton at observed river reach, and a series of numerical simulations were performed to study the effect of river discharge on growth of periphyton in the sand river. The results of the numerical simulations show that the net primary production of periphyton decreases with the river discharge. These results suggest that the reduction of river discharge at ordinary water stage strongly affects the primary productivity of periphyton even in sand river.
Dam construction in a river can change its hydrological pattern and trap sediments, which results in ecological changes in the downstream. It is a common phenomenon in the downstream of dams to have decreased sediment flow and increased periphyton. Artificial floods and sediment application are suggested as mitigation practices in order to simulate natural process of flood; transporting sediment and sloughing periphyton off. In this study the effects of artificial floods on periphyton were examined by applying sand artificially and discharging water from a dam (Yangyang Dam, Korea). The study area has been suffering from turbidity problems caused by shore erosion of the dam. The accumulation of inorganic sediments and increase of periphyton on the river bottom are the major factors of habitat deterioration in the downstream reaches. Artificial flood and artificial addition of sand was performed in summer and the effects were measured. Piles of applied sands were washed off easily by discharge and it enhanced the periphyton sloughing effect. The removal efficiency of periphyton was 50 ~ 80% within the 2 km reach from the dam. In conclusion artificial floods and sand application can be a good mitigation measure for the habitat rehabilitation after a dam construction in streams.
During the spring and fall of 1994 and winter of 1995, the exposure time of periphyton biomass on terval. In the streams with low periphyton biomass (chi. a: 2-4 mg/$m^2$) in natural rocks, biomass of arttificial substrata (unglazed tile: $3.7{\times}9.5{\times}2 cm$) exceeded that of the natural rocks after 28 days, while sites with high biomass (chi. a: 20-60 mg/$m^2$) in natural rocks showed slower biomass accumulation after 40 days. Due to the high licht input and temperature in a Partially shaded mountain stream, development of periphyton biomass in spring occurred faster than that of winter. In general, development of periphyton biomass placed on artificial substrata took 4-5 weeks in spring and at least 6 weeks In winter to reach the natural level.

Background: Direct impact of inorganic carbon (i.e., carbon dioxide ($CO_2$)) on the periphyton community is important to understand how and to what extent atmospheric conditions can affect the structure and dynamics of these communities in lotic systems. We investigated the influence of elevated $CO_2$ concentration on the periphyton community in the artificially constructed channels during the winter period. The channels made of acrylic paneling were continuously supplied with surface water discharged from a small reservoir, which was supported with ground water, at a flow rate of 5 L/min, and water temperature ranging $4-5^{\circ}C$. The effects of elevated $CO_2$ concentrations (790 ppm) were evaluated in comparison with the control (395 ppm $CO_2$) by analyzing pH, water carbon content and nutrients in water, periphyton composition and biomass, chlorophyll-a, ash-free dry-matter at 2-day intervals for 10 days. Results: After the addition of $CO_2$, significant decreases of pH, $NH_3-N$, and $PO_4-P$ (p < 0.05) and increases of chlorophyll-a, ash-free dry-matter, and the cell density of periphyton (p < 0.01) were observed, whereas the species composition of periphyton and water carbon content did not change. Conclusions: These results suggest that elevated $CO_2$ in flowing water system with low temperature could facilitate the growth of periphyton resulting in biomass increase, which could further influence water quality and the consumers throughout the food web.
Eutrophication is a well-known phenomenon in lentic habitats, however it is receiving increasing attention in shallow streams of Korea due to the increase of periphyton to a nuisance level. In this study temporal and spatial variation in periphyton standing crop and nutrient concentrations were surveyed in the upper reach of the Han River (the Inbuk Stream) that used to be a pristine rural stream until 1980s. Chlorophyll-a concentration per unit surface area of bottom substrate was examined monthly for one year period at nine sites along the Inbuk Stream together with environmental factors such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and water velocity. The standing crop of periphytic algae ranged from $4{\sim}242mgChl.a/m^2$ with a median of $55mgChl.a/m^2$, often exceeding the nuisance level criterion. Along the stream periphyton increased significantly from $39{\pm}48mgChl.a/m^2$ to $94{\pm}49mgChl.a/m^2$ after merging of a tributary in an intensive agricultural basin with high phosphorus concentrations. Seasonally periphyton biomass was highest in autumn (median $171{\pm}76mgChl.a/m^2$) from October through December when water flow velocity was low (median $0.4{\pm}0.3m/s$), while it was higher in flood season (median $1.2{\pm}0.4m/s$) and freezing season (median $0.2{\pm}0.3m/s$) was lower. The result shows that this rural stream often shows characteristics of eutrophication according to periphyton standing crop and it may be regulated by phosphorus and water velocity.
The community of periphyton was studied at high altitude streams of the Han-river System, including Buk-stream and Hangae-stream from October to November 2010. The study had special emphasis on the distribution of the cryophilic and mountain periphyton. In this research, 117 taxa of periphyton appeared and 80 taxa of diatom were included within these periphytons. Saproxenous taxa, such as Achnanthes convergens and Hannaea arcus var. subarcus were appeared in most sites, 7 sites were dominant by filamentous taxa in green and blue green algae. The DAIpo value was from 48.8 to 92.5 for the water system of this research. Most sites showed a good water quality, receiving a B class or above except the Woljeong-stream and the Daeki-stream. Cryophilic and mountain periphyton appeared 9 taxa which composed by diatoms Cymbella affinis, Cymbella tumida, Diatoma mesodon, Diatoma vulgare, Eunotia pectinalis, Hannaea arcus, Hannaea arcus var. subarcus and Synedra inaequalis and green algae Ulothrix zonata. Among these taxa, Hannaea arcus var. subarcus, found in 29 out of 33 sites, had the highest frequency of apperance. The relative frequency of Hannaea arcus var. subarcus was positively correlated with altitude($r^2$=0.539) and negatively correlated with water temperature($r^2$=0.338). As a result, Hannaea arcus var. subarcus showed the characteristics of cryophilic and mountain periphyton in the research site.
Flora and standing crops of the periphyton communities were examined at five sites in the mountainous streams of the Dam of Peace, Korea, from June to November 2003. The attached algal communities comprised totally 76 taxa belong to the 5 classes. In species composition, diatoms and green algae overwhelmingly dominated the periphyton communities although their standing crops were low. During the survey period, major dominant species were Navicula gregaria and Nav. pupla var. capitata, as 11.7% and 8.9% of total standing crop, respectively. Other subdominant species were Scenedesmus ecornis and Spirogyra weberii in green algae, Cymbella affinis, Cymbella minuta. Fragilaria capucina, Melosira varians, Naw. cryptocephala, Nav. exigua var. capitata, Nav. gregaria, Nit. sublineuris in diatom. In the seasonal appearances, S. ecornis and Oscillatoria nigra were occurred in summer, C. affinis and F. capucina in autumn, and N. sublinearis, and species Spirogyra weberii in winter, respectively.
