Objectives : This study was performed in order to investigate the effectiveness of electroneuronography as predicting factors for peripheral facial palsy prognosis. Methods : Data were gathered with 32 Bell's palsy patients. The grade of Bell's palsy were measured 2 times; first medical exam and 4 weeks after treatment, with Lucille Daniels's Muscle test. We converted the grade system use on five rating scale. The significance of treatment verified with paired t-test used on first medical exam and 4 weeks after treatment score and predicting factors of electroneuronography verified with simple regression test. Results : The improvement score were statistically significant different before and after treatment(p<.001). Mean axonal loss according to electroneuronography showed a statistically significant correlation in predicting peripheral facial palsy (P<0.01). Conclusion : Axonal loss as determined by electroneuronography has statistical significance as predicting factors for peripheral facial palsy prognosis.
Objectives : This study was performed to observe the effect of complex therapy, including electro-acupuncture and magnetic-acupuncture, on peripheral facial nerve palsy. Methods : Nine patients with peripheral facial nerve palsy were treated with acupuncture using electrical and magnetic stimulation. Acupoints in the face were stimulated with an electromagnetic field, as widely and as evenly as possible. To evaluate the effects before and after treatment we used Yanagihara's unweighted grading system, House-Brackmann scale, and Sunnybrook facial grading system and image once a week. Results : After treatment, the scores of Yanagihara's unweighted grading system, House-Brackmann scale and Sunnybrook facial grading system each improved (p-value < 0.05). Conclusion : Complex therapy using electro-acupuncture and magnetic-acupuncture might be an effective treatment to improve symptoms of peripheral facial nerve palsy. Further randomized-controlled trials are required to verify the efficacy and results of this study.
Objectives We report a series of 2 treatment cases with Hyeongbangdojok-san which is based on Sasang Constitutional Medicine for peripheral facial palsy in Soyangin. Methods We diagnosed these two cases as a Soyangsangpung. And we prescribed Hyeongbangdojok-san for their physical symptoms. The improvement of their peripheral facial palsy were evaluated. Results After the Hyeongbangdojok-san was given, the patient's peripheral facial paralysis and physical symptoms were improved. Conclusions These case-studies showed an efficient result of using Hyeongbangdojok-san in the peripheral facial paralysis of Soyangin.
Objectives : This study was done for reporting the effect of scratching method on patients with peripheral facial palsy. Methods : We investigated 34 cases of patients with peripheral facial paralysis, and devided patients into two groups : We treated one group by complex oriental medical treatment with scratching method therapy, and did the other group by complex oriental medical treatment without scratching method therapy. gross grading system of House-Brackmann(HB score) and Yanagihara's unweighed grading system(Y score) at baseline and final were used for evaluating the effect of the treatment. Results : 1. In scratching method group and non-scratching method group, compared with baseline, at final, HB score was significantly decreased and Y score was significantly increased. 2. At final, scratching method group showed significant decrease on HB score and significant increase on Y score compared with non-scratching method group. Conclusions : scratching method showed significant improvement in peripheral facial palsy.
A 69 year-old woman was admitted with sudden left facial weakness. She had no other neurologic deficit, except for left peripheral type facial palsy. She had a presumptive diagnosis of Bell's palsy. The blink test was indicative of left facial neuropathy due to left medullary lesion. Diffusion weighted (DWI) brain MRI demonstrated high signal signal lesion in left dorsolateral ponto-medullary junction. Apperant diffusion coefficient (ADC) brain MRI showed low signal lesion in the same area. We present an unusual case of ipsilateral peripheral facial palsy in dosolateral ponto-medullary infarction without other neurologic deficits.
Background: Facial nerve palsy presents a significant healthcare challenge, impacting daily life and social interactions. This systematic review investigates the potential utility of ultrasonography as a diagnostic tool for facial nerve palsy. Methods: Electronic searches will be conducted across various databases, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL (Cochrane Central register of Controlled Trials), CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), KMBASE (Korean Medical Database), ScienceON, and OASIS (Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System), up to February 2024. The primary outcome will focus on ultrasonography-related parameters, such as facial nerve diameter and muscle thickness. Secondary outcomes will encompass clinical measurements, including facial nerve grading scales and electrodiagnostic studies. the risk of bias in individual study will be assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias assessment tool, while the grading of recommendations, assessment, development, and evaluations methodology will be utilized to evaluate the overall quality of evidence. Conclusion: This study aims to review existing evidence and evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of ultrasonography for peripheral facial nerve palsy.

Peripheral facial nerve palsy is a neurological condition/disease characterized by unilateral paralysis of the facial muscles. We report the effects of complex Korean medicine treatment in 2 patients diagnosed with Bell's palsy who developed symptoms 3-4 days following vaccination with ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 and who received oral steroids and antiviral medications. Complex Korean medicine treatments including acupuncture, electroacupuncture, bee venom acupuncture, cupping therapy, herbal medicine, and physical therapy were performed. Symptom improvement was evaluated daily using the Numerical Rating Scale, House-Brackmann Grade, and Yanagihara's Score. Patient 1 was hospitalized for 22 days and Patient 2 visited the outpatient clinic 20 times. In both cases, postauricular pain caused by Bell's palsy disappeared, and symptoms of facial paralysis improved following completion of treatment. These findings could suggest that combined Korean medicine treatment may improve symptoms of peripheral facial nerve palsy.

Objectives : This study was performed in order to investigate the effectiveness of electromyography and the Heart Rate Variability(HRV) test as prognosis factors, and to clarify correlation between Electromyography and the Heart Rate Variability test. Methods : 44 Bell's palsy patients who were graded V on the House-Brackmann scale and underwent HRV and EMG testing were retrospectively reviewed based on medical records. Results from both tests were analyzed via simple linear regression, and bivariate correlation analysis was performed to investigate the correlation between results from the two tests. The severity of the facial palsy at onset and at 2 weeks after treatment were evaluated with the H-B grade and Yanagihara grading system, and was converted into improvement scores. Results : Mean axonal loss according to electromyography showed a statistically significant correlation in predicting peripheral facial palsy improvement(p<0.01). HR, SDNN, TP, LF, HF, VLF, and LF/HF ratio on the Heart Rate Variability test showed no significant correlation in predicting peripheral facial palsy improvement. Mean axonal loss determined by electromyography, and HR, SDNN, TP, LF, HF, VLF, and LF/HF ratio recorded with the Heart Rate Variability test was analyzed with the bivariate correlation analysis method. Mean axonal loss and SDNN showed a statistically significant correlation(p<0.01) Conclusions : The Heart Rate Variability test has no statistical significance in predicting peripheral facial palsy improvement. SDNN has a statistically significant correlation with mean axonal loss as determined by electromyography.
Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate clinical evidence of acupuncture treatment for peripheral facial palsy in South Korea. Methods : All process was independently proceeded by two investigators. Literature search was performed in 9 databases from their inception to February 2013. Searched reports was twice excluded for title, abstract and body. And then, data extract and analysis was done before assessing risk of bias by Cochrane Handbook. Results : 10 randomized controlled trials(RCT) were finally included. 4 RCT handled postauricular pain with facial palsy. All articles at least used in combination with two treatments. Interventions like pharmacopuncture, electroacupuncture, scalp acupuncture etcetera were conducted as treatment to evaluate efficacy, and some study reported advantageous effects of treatment group compared to baseline or control group. Adverse events didn't referd to in any studies. In assessing risk of bias, indefinite and uncertain information made all included trials to have a high risk of bias. Conclusions : Because of methodological deficit, there is no sufficient evidence to allow any conclusion about the efficacy of acupuncture for peripheral facial palsy. Therefore, well designed trials with high quality is needed from now on.
