  • Torsional oscillations of a system incorporating a Hooke's joint are investigated by adopting a nonlinear 2-degree-of-freedom model. Linear and Van der Pol transformations are applied to obtain the equations of motion to which the method of averaging can be readily applied. Various subharmonic and combination resonances are identified with the conditions of their occurrences. Applying the method of averaging leads to the reduced amplitude- and phase-equations of motion, of which constant and periodic solutions are obtained numerically. The periodic solution which emerges from Hopf bifurcation point experiences period doubling bifurcation leading to infinite solution rather than chaotic solution.

  • We show the existence of a negative solution for the system of the following nonlinear wave equations with critical growth, under Dirichlet boundary condition and periodic condition $$u_{tt}-u_{xx}=au+b{\upsilon}+\frac{2{\alpha}}{{\alpha}+{\beta}}u_+^{\alpha-1}{\upsilon}_+^{\beta}+s{\phi}_{00}+f,\\{\upsilon}_{tt}-{\upsilon}_{xx}=cu+d{\upsilon}+\frac{2{\alpha}}{{\alpha}+{\beta}}u_+^{\alpha}{\upsilon}_+^{{\beta}-1}+t{\phi}_{00}+g,$$ where ${\alpha},{\beta}>1$ are real constants, $u_+={\max}\{u,0\},\;s,\;t{\in}R,\;{\phi}_{00}$ is the eigenfunction corresponding to the positive eigenvalue ${\lambda}_{00}$ of the wave operator and f, g are ${\pi}$-periodic, even in x and t and bounded functions.

  • In the earlier application of the spline finite strip method(FSM), the uniform B3-spline functions were used in the longitudinal direction while the conventional interpolation functions were used in the transverse direction to construct the displacement filed in a strip. To overcome the shortcoming of the uniform B3-spline, non-periodic B-spline was developed as the displacement function. The use of non-periodic B3-spline function requires no tangential vectors at both ends to interpolate the geometry of shell and the Kronecker delta property is also satisfied at the end boundaries. Recently, non-periodic spline FSM which was modified to have a multiple knots at the boundary was developed for the shell analysis and applied to the analysis of bridges. In the formulation of a non-symmetric spline finite strip method, the concepts of non-periodic B3-spline and a stress-resultant finite strip with drilling degrees of freedom for a shell are used. The introduction of non-symmetrically spaced knots in the longitudinal direction allows the selective local refinement to improve the accuracy of solution at the connections or at the location of concentrated load. A number of numerical tests were performed to prove the accuracy and efficiency of the present study.

  • In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of the mathematical model of two non-interacting preys in presence of their common natural enemy (predator) based on the non-autonomous differential equations. We establish sufficient conditions for the permanence, extinction and global stability in the general non-autonomous case. In the periodic case, by means of the continuation theorem in coincidence degree theory, we establish a set of sufficient conditions for the existence of a positive periodic solutions with strictly positive components. Also, we give some sufficient conditions for the global asymptotic stability of the positive periodic solution.

  • The breaking phenomenon of regular periodic waves generated by a numerical wave maker is simulated by finite-difference method which can cope with strong interface motions. The air and water flows are simultaneously solved in the time-marching solution procedure for the Navier-Stokes equation. A density-function technique is devised for the implemenation of the interface conditions. The accuracy is examined and applied to the simulation of two-dimensional breaking phenomena of periodic gravity waves.

  • This paper presents new speed control strategy for periodic load torque injected in AC motor. If motor drive system has a periodic load torque, it causes a periodic motor speed ripple bringing about vibrations and noises. This paper proposed new control method consisting of PIR(proportional-integral-resonant) controller and repetitive controller. PIR controller controls DC, low frequency and fundamental components and repetitive controller controls other harmonics. The performance has been verified through computer simulations using MATLAB Simulink and experiments.

  • In this paper we study the dynamic bifurcation of the Swift-Hohenberg equation on a periodic cell ${\Omega}=[-L,L]$. It is shown that the equations bifurcates from the trivial solution to an attractor $\mathcal{A}_{\lambda}$ when th control parameter ${\lambda}$ crosses the critical value. In the odd periodic case $\mathcal{A}_{\lambda}$ is homeomorphic to $S^1$ and consists of eight singular points and thei connecting orbits. In the periodic case, $\mathcal{A}_{\lambda}$ is homeomorphic to $S^1$, an contains a torus and two circles which consist of singular points.

  • A closed loop system with a linear plant and nonlinearity in the feedback connection is analyzed for its quasi-static orbital stability by a state-space approach. First a periodic orbit is assumed to exist in the loop which is determined by describing function method for the given nonlinearity. This is possible by selecting a proper nonlinearity and a rigorous justification of the describing function method.[1-3, 18, 20]. Then by introducing residual operator, a linear perturbed model can be formulated. Using various transformations like a modified eigenstructure decomposition, periodic-averaging, charge of variables and coordinate transformation, the stability of the periodic orbit, as a solution of harmonic balance, can be shown by investigating a simple scalar function and result of linear algebra. • Nonlinear behavior analysis was used to verify whether a one-way clutch is effective for reducing the torsional vibration of a paired spur gear system under periodic excitation. The dynamic responses were studied over a wide frequency range by speed sweeping to check the nonlinear behavior using numerical integration. The gear system with a one-way clutch showed typical nonlinear behavior. The oscillating component of the dynamic transmission error was reduced over the entire frequency range compared to a system without a one-way clutch. The one-way clutch also eliminated unsteady continuous jump phenomena over multiple solution bands, and prevented double-side contact, even with very small backlash. Installing a one-way clutch on both sides of the gear system was more effective at mitigating the negative effects of external periodic excitation and various parameter changes than a conventional gear system without a one-way clutch.
