This study was conducted to investigate relationships and gender differences in dietary supplement (DS) and oriental supplement (OS) prevalence as well as anti-doping awareness during training and the game period. Korea National Sport University athletes (343 male and 136 female) participated in this study and completed DS and OS practice and anti-doping awareness questionnaires. Forty-six percent of athletes used DS during the training period, and there was significantly higher DS use in females (53%) compared to males (43%) (P < 0.05). Twenty-eight percent of athletes used OS, and there was significantly higher OS use in females (35%) than males (26%) (P < 0.05) during the training period. The primary reason of DS use was to supply energy both in males (36%) and females (28%). The main reason for male athletes' OS use was to supply energy (41 %). Meanwhile, the reasons for female athletes' OS use were to supply energy (23%), to maintain health (19%), and to improve recovery ability (20%), which showed a significant gender difference (P < 0.05). Athletes rated their perceived degree of satisfaction, perceived importance, and beliefs in efficacy of DS and OS use all over 50% during the training period, and no gender differences were detected. In a comparison between athletes educated about anti-doping (at least more than one time) and non-received athletes, DS and OS use during the training period was 2.30 (1.47-3.60) and 1.71 (1.03-2.82), respectively. DS and OS use immediately before the game period was 2.38 (1.50-3.80) and 3.99 (1.20-13.28), respectively.Elite athletes' anti-doping education was highly related to increased DS use during the training period and immediately before the game. Although elite athletes use various DS and OS during the training period and before the game period, doping education for elite athletes is related with DS and OS use during the training period and before the game.
Purpose: The prevalence of skin cancers and cutaneous premalignant lesions are increasing recently. It is necessary to treat cutaneous premalignant lesions, because these can progress to invasive skin cancers. We conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the usefulness of $CO_2$ laser resurfacing in skin tumor surgery. Methods: From 2005 to 2008, 14 patients with skin cancers, photodamaged skin and cutaneous premalignant lesions were treated with skin cancer excision, immediate reconstruction, and $CO_2$ facial laser resurfacing. Mean average follow-up period was 15.6 months (5 months - 36 months). Biopsy and clinical photograph were taken preoperatively, intraoperatively and through follow-up period to assess the effectiveness of laser resurfacing. Recurrence and side effects were evaluated through follow-up period. Results: Histologic examination shows the abolition of actinic atypia, regeneration of epidermis and normalization of cellular differentiation after laser resurfacing. Clinical photographs shows elimination of keratoses and spots, and the homogeneous, smoothening change of skin surface, indicating healthy and younger faces. All patients had remained free of skin cancers and premalignant lesions in laser-treated field through follow-up period. Conclusion: $CO_2$ laser resurfacing in skin tumor surgery can treat not only premalignant lesions but also subclinical lesions of photodamaged skin. Moreover it may be helpful in prophylaxis against skin cancers and premalignant lesions, providing rejuvenation and cosmetic improvement.
Objectives : To compare the performance of three comorbidity measurements (Charlson comorbidity index, Elixhauser s comorbidity and comorbidity selection) with the effect of different comorbidity lookback periods when predicting in-hospital mortality for patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention. Methods : This was a retrospective study on patients aged 40 years and older who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention. To distinguish comorbidity from complications, the records of diagnosis were drawn from the National Health Insurance Database excluding diagnosis that admitted to the hospital. C-statistic values were used as measures for in comparing the predictability of comorbidity measures with lookback period, and a bootstrapping procedure with 1,000 replications was done to determine approximate 95% confidence interval. Results : Of the 61,815 patients included in this study, the mean age was 63.3 years (standard deviation: ${\pm}$10.2) and 64.8% of the population was male. Among them, 1,598 2.6%) had died in hospital. While the predictive ability of the Elixhauser's comorbidity and comorbidity selection was better than that of the Charlson comorbidity index, there was no significant difference among the three comorbidity measurements. Although the prevalence of comorbidity increased in 3 years of lookback periods, there was no significant improvement compared to 1 year of a lookback period. Conclusions : In a health outcome study for patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention using National Health Insurance Database, the Charlson comorbidity index was easy to apply without significant difference in predictability compared to the other methods. The one year of observation period was adequate to adjust the comorbidity. Further work to select adequate comorbidity measurements and lookback periods on other diseases and procedures are needed.
This study has been conducted with continuous dental sanitary education for primary school pupils for five years from 1997 through 2001, based on data obtained from a 97' survey on primary school pupils' recognition on dental hygiene education and their permanent dental health capacity. Following results were drawn through comparative analysis of data obtained during the survey period. Approx 70.77% of the examinees have experienced decay missing feeling (DMF) in the year 2001, suggesting a good effectiveness of dental hygiene education compared with 92.1 % of DMF rate in 1997. It has been found that pupils' knowledge and recognition on dental hygiene and management, etc were improved, as well as their eating habits and consciousness were changed. Comparative analysis of annual DMF showed that DMF rate, DMFT index, and DT rate were found to decrease every year, suggesting a improved dental health capacity. Grade level analysis revealed that DMFT index and DT rate were found to decrease every year during the survey period, suggesting pupils' dental management and consciousness were improved and changed. It has been found that DMF rate more significantly increased in a higher grade in 2001 than 1997. There was no difference in DMF rate between grades of primary school in 1997. However, in the year 2001 increment of approx 10% of DMF rate were observed in a higher grade.
Aim: To evaluate precancerous lesions such as hyperplasia and endometrial polyps in obese postmenopausal women. Materials and Methods: Women who were referred with abnormal uterine bleeding in postmenopausal period or the presence of endometrial cells on cervical cytology in our department were investigated. Anthropometric measurements such as height, weight, body mass index, waist/hip ratio and endometrial thickness were compared between a precancerous lesion (hyperplasia and endometrial polyp) group and a pathologically normal group. Results: We detected statistically significant thickening of endometrium in patients with precancerous lesions. Moreover patients with precancerous lesions had higher body mass index than the pathologically normal group. Conclusions: We found elevated precancerous lesion rates in overweight and obese women in the postmenopausal period, of interest given that the prevalence of obesity is increasing in most parts of the world. Although screening for endometrial cancer is not recommended for the general population, in high-risk populations like obese postmenopausal women, it may be very important.
Prenatal nicotine exposure over an entire pregnancy has been associated with an increased prevalence of hyperactivity, anxiety-like behavior and depression-like behavior in mature rats. However, the effects of maternal nicotine exposure in late gestation and lactation on the psychology and behavior of adolescent rat offspring are unclear. Thus, we investigated the effect of nicotine exposure during late gestation and lactation on anxiety-like and impulsive decision-making behavior in adolescent offspring of rat. Female rats were orally exposed to nicotine which is within range of plasma level of human chronic smokers during the period of third last period of gestation and lactation. When the offspring were weaned, we observed alterations in the anxiety-like behavior and decision-making ability of adolescent rat offspring using light/dark box test and T-maze delay-based cost-benefit decision-making task. The maternal consumption of nicotine reduced both the time spent in the light compartment and the number of transitions compared to nicotine-free rats. Moreover, such nicotine exposed adolescent offspring rats showed impulsive decision making which chose the instant reward in a decision-making situation. We found that nicotine exposure during late gestation and lactation induces an increase in anxiety-like and impulsive decision-making behavior at this developmental stage. These findings suggest that maternal nicotine-exposed offspring are at an increased risk of developing anxious and impulsive behavior.
Radiation proctitis and radiation cystitis are major complications for patients with cervical carcinoma following radiotherapy. In the present study, we aimed to determine the potential risk factors for the development of radiation proctitis and radiation cystitis after irradiation. A total of 1,518 patients with cervical carcinoma received external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) followed by high-dose-rate intracavitary brachytherapy (HDRICB) in our hospital. The incidences of radiation proctitis and radiation cystitis were recorded and associations with different factors (age, time period, tumor stage) were analyzed with ${\chi}^2$ (chi-squared) and Fisher exact tests. We found that 161 and 94 patients with cervical carcinoma were diagnosed with radiation proctitis and radiation cystitis, respectively, following radiotherapy. The prevalence of Grade I-II radiation proctitis or radiation cystitis was significantly lower than that of Grade III (radiation proctitis: 3.82% vs. 6.76%, P < 0.05; radiation cystitis: 2.31% vs. 3.87%, P < 0.05) and was significantly enhanced in patients with late stage (IIIb) tumor progression compared to those in early stage (Ib, IIa) (P < 0.05). Moreover, the incidence of radiation proctitis and cystitis was not correlated with age or, time period following radiation, for each patient (P > 0.05). These observations indicate that a late stage of tumor progression is a potential risk factor for the incidence of radiation proctitis and cystitis in cervical carcinoma patients receiving radiotherapy.
The purposes of this study were to analyze causes of wife abuse through married couples as the research subject. The study employed ecological perspective to the study of wife abuse as an multiple dimensional and integrated paradigm combined with isolated theories of other research. The subjects were 369 married couples who live in Gwangju area. Data were analyzed with Cronbach'α, factor analysis, basic statistics, paired-t test, 1-test, ANOVA, Duncan's test, correlation analysis, stepwise multiple regression analysis. and hierarchical regression analysis using the SPSS 10.0 for windows. The major findings were as follows; 1. The psychological abuse score, physical abuse score, and sexual abuse score were lower than median without exception. Hut prevalence rates of wife abuse were considerably serious; 91.9% psychological abuse, 44.4% physical abuse, and 53.7% sexual abuse. 2. The results of the hierarchical regression analysis indicated that the marital conflict had the strongest impact on wife abuse. And the attitude toward wife abuse of husband, hostility of husband, exposure experience of domestic violence during a growth period of husband, perception toward social violence of husband, exposure experience of domestic violence during a growth period of wife, drinking problem of husband, and interpersonal relationships stress of husband had influenced on wife abuse. These variables accounted for 49.5% of variance of wife abuse behaviors. As the result of the study, it concludes that the ecological systemic approach on the cause of wife abuse is useful as a theoretical instrument. Suggestions and implications are made for further research and practical application.
The present study was conducted to document North Korea's long standing food shortage situation and to evaluate the devastating effects of its recent food crisis on the already poor health and nutritional state of the people in North Korea. We analyzed the mail survey data on food consumption patterns and anthropometry of 109 North Korean defectors, male, aged 20 years and older, who resettled in the South during the period of 1988-1999. The result of our survey data indicated that during 1988-1993 when North Korea's food supply was not yet emerged as a serious problem, food and nutrient intake of North Korean defectors was estimated to be significantly lower that the recommended intake levels for maintenance. Energy and protein intake of subjects who defected further with the recent food crisis. For subjects who defected after 1994, the total and animal food intakes were reduced to 67% and 25%, respectively, of the amounts consumed by those who defected in the period of 1988-1993, and their energy and protein intake was decreased by 27% and 30% to the level of 1,181kcal and 40g. Regardless of the time of defection, the mean height and body weight of defectors was significantly lower than that of South Korean reference men. The prevalence of infectious diseases and malnutrition signs was higher among defectors who resettled in the South after 1994 compared to those who resettled during 1988-1993.
The use of big data may facilitate the recognition and interpretation of causal relationships between disease occurrence and climatic variables. Considering the immense contribution of rhinoviruses in causing respiratory infections, in this study, we examined the effects of various climatic variables on the seasonal epidemiology of rhinovirus infections in the temperate climate of Cheonan, Korea. Trends in rhinovirus detection were analyzed based on 9,010 tests performed between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2018, at Dankook University Hospital, Cheonan, Korea. Seasonal patterns of rhinovirus detection frequency were compared with the local climatic variables for the same period. Rhinovirus infection was the highest in children under 10 years of age, and climatic variables influenced the infection rate. Temperature, wind chill temperature, humidity, and particulate matter significantly affected rhinovirus detection. Temperature and wind chill temperature were higher on days on which rhinovirus infection was detected than on which it was not. Conversely, particulate matter was lower on days on which rhinovirus was detected. Atmospheric pressure and particulate matter showed a negative relationship with rhinovirus detection, whereas temperature, wind chill temperature, and humidity showed a positive relationship. Rhinovirus infection was significantly related to climatic factors such as temperature, wind chill temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, and particulate matter. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to find a relationship between daily temperatures/wind chill temperatures and rhinovirus infection over an extended period.
