The Added-Value Metric - A Complementary Performance Measure for Six Sigma and Lean Production

  • The Six Sigma and Lean Production methodologies suggest that creating value for customers is the objective of a production process or an organisation. In the production context, "added value" dominates the discussion about the creation of value to customers. However, "added value" is often only defined conceptually or discussed at a strategic level, and the link between added value and customer value has not yet been well conceptualised. Therefore, the purpose of the paper is to develop a methodology to measure added value in order to complement the existing performance measures in Six Sigma and Lean Production by conceptualising the link between customer value and added value. The conceptual link "confirms" that quality, time, and costs are the elements of added value, which are transformed into a metric to express customer value. The implementation of the metric recommends the adoption of Lean (Six) Sigma and Lean Accounting (Activity Based Costing), which thus implies that "leanness" is an important "feature" of added value.

  • The business value of IT has been the focus of the academic and business field in recent years, along with the massive IT investment. Unfortunately, those studies have not been able to demonstrate strong linkages between the IT investment and performance. The impact of IT investment on performance is an important research topic that needs to consider the role of key contextual factors and intermediate factors. This study develops an integrated model for IT investment, with the mediating effects of production/coordination performance towards firm performance. In addition, the model is moderated by some factors like ISP(Information Systems Planning), Business Planning alignment, top management support, IT education and training, and process innovation. The empirical result, based on the moderating regression analysis, indicates that the relationship between IT Investment and production/coordination performance is significantly positive depending on moderating factors. However, production/coordination performance is partially related to firm performance.

Effect of zinc on the immune response and production performance of broilers: a meta-analysis

  • Objective: This study performed a meta-analysis of published trials to determine the effects of zinc on the immune response and production performance of broilers. Methods: A database was built from published literature regarding the addition of zinc forms or doses and their relation to the immune response and production performance of broilers. Different doses or forms of zinc were identified in the database. The recorded parameters were related to the immune response and production performance. The database contained a total of 323 data points from 41 studies that met the criteria. Then, the data were processed for a meta-analysis using a mixed model methodology. The doses or different forms of zinc were considered fixed effects, different studies were treated as random effects, and p-values were used as the model statistics. Results: An increase in zinc dose increased (p<0.05) pancreas metallothionein (MT) and zinc concentrations in the plasma, tibia and meat, all in quadratic patterns, but linearly decreased (p<0.05) the heterophil/lymphocyte (H/L) ratio. Regarding the different zinc forms, both inorganic and organic zinc increased (p<0.05) the zinc concentrations in the plasma and tibia, the calcium and phosphorus contents in the tibia, and the antioxidant activity of superoxide dismutase in meat as compared to control. An increase in zinc dose increased average daily gain (ADG) and decreased feed conversion ratio (FCR) following a quadratic pattern (p<0.05). Inorganic and organic zinc decreased (p<0.05) FCR and H/L ratio than that of control, but these two forms were similar for these parameters. Conclusion: Zinc addition has a positive impact on immunity and broiler production. Zinc can suppress stress and inhibit the occurrence of lipid peroxidation in broilers, and it can also improve ADG, FCR, and the quality of broiler carcasses.

생산정보시스템에 대한 품질인식이 사용자 성과와 기업성과에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Perceived Quality toward User Performance and Corporate Performance in Production Information Systems)

  • 본 연구는 생산정보시스템에 대한 품질인식이 사용자 성과와 기업성과에 미치는 영향관계를 파악해 보는 것을 주목적으로 하였다. 연구목적의 효과적인 달성을 위하여 관련 선행연구에 관한 고찰결과를 토대로 연구모형과 가설을 수립하였다. 생산정보시스템을 도입 활용 중인 132개 기업을 대상으로 수집된 자료를 이용하여 공분산 구조모델 분석을 통한 연구가설 검정을 수행하였다. 본 연구의 실증분석 결과를 요약해 보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 생산정보시스템의 생산정보품질과 지원서비스품질은 사용자 만족도에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 반면 시스템품질은 별다른 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 생산정보시스템의 품질요인, 즉 생산정보품질, 시스템품질, 지원서비스품질은 모두 시스템 활용도에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 셋째, 생산정보시스템에 대한 사용자의 만족도, 시스템 활용도, 성과개선 간에는 모두 긍정적인 관계성이 존재하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이상의 분석 결과를 토대로 연구의 시사점과 한계점 및 향후 연구방향을 제시하였다.

학교급식 생산단계별 영양소 보존관리에 대한 영양사의 인식 - 대구지역을 중심으로 (Dieticians' Perception of Nutrient Preservation Management Practices during Meal Production by School Food Service in Daegu Area)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore nutrition teachers/dietitians' perception towards production management practices as well as the importance & performance of nutrient preservation during production by school foodservices. A total of 120 school nutrition teachers/dietitians in the Daegu area participated in this study. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis, t-test, and ANOVA using SPSS/Windows (ver 17.0). A questionnaire consisted of three dimensions with 66 items concerning the general characteristics of schools and respondents, production management practices, and perceived importance and performance of nutrient preservation. Exactly 79.2% of dietitians responded that scheduling of production management is necessary, and 52.5% of respondents perceived that their knowledge for nutrient preservation is of normal/average level. Thirty-eight percent of respondents did not establish scheduling of production management; according to them, cooking stage has priority over other stages of nutrient preservation. Perceived importance score was higher than perceived performance score in all stages of production management. The difference between perceived importance and performance in the production scheduling stage was found to be statistically significant. The results indicate that nutrition control point should be established and managed to prevent nutrient loss in all production stages. Further, dietitians who do not take measures to reduce nutrient loss should be carefully educated on the importance of nutrient control and be motivated to follow guidelines on nutrient preservation.

CBM 저류층의 생산성 예측을 위한 표준곡선 모델의 적합성 평가 연구 (A Study on the Conformity Assessment of Type Curve Models to Predict Production Performance in Coalbed Methane Reservoirs)

  • 석탄층 메탄가스(CBM) 저류층은 탄화과정 중에 탄리(cleat)가 물로 채워지게 되며, 탄리 내 물의 거동이 CBM 생산거동에 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 따라서 정확한 생산 자료 분석을 수행하기 위해서는 탄리 내 물 포화도가 CBM 생산에 미치는 영향을 고려해야 한다. 이에 본 연구에서는 서로 다른 물 포화도 조건을 갖는 CBM 저류층에 표준곡선(type curve) 분석을 수행하고 조건별 적합도를 평가하였다. CBM 생산 자료를 취득하기 위해 CMG사(社)의 GEM을 이용하여 물 완전포화, 중간포화, 불포화 상태의 저류층 모델을 구축하였으며, Fetkovich, Palacio-Blasingame(P-B), Agarwal-Gardner (A-G) 표준곡선 분석을 수행하였다. 그 결과, 불포화 CBM의 경우 Fetkovich 표준곡선이 후기 시간 영역에서 일치(matching)가 잘 이루어지지 않는 반면 A-G 표준곡선 모델에 우수한 일치를 나타내었다. 또한 중간 포화 CBM 생산 자료는 후기 시간 영역에서 표준곡선 모델 모두와 잘 일치되는 것을 확인하였다. 완전 포화 조건의 경우 최대 생산량(qpeak)이후 적은 양의 생산 자료만을 이용해서도 P-B와 A-G 표준곡선에 정확하게 일치되었으며, 이를 기반으로 특정 물 포화도 조건에서 각 표준곡선이 갖는 장 단점이 분석되었다. 따라서 CBM 개발 시 물 포화도 조건에 따라 적합한 표준곡선을 선택함으로써 CBM 저류층의 정확한 생산 자료 분석이 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

Optimal buffer size control of serial production lines with quality inspection machines

  • In this paper, based on the performance analysis of serial production lines with quality inspection machines, we develope an buffer size optimization method to maximize the production rate. The total sum of buffer sizes are given and a constant, and under this constraint, using the linear approximation method, we suggest a closed form solution for the optimization problem with an acceptable error. Also, we show that the upstream and downstream buffers of the worst performance machine have a significant effect on the production rate. Finally, the suggested methods are validated by simulations.

  • Samsung Electronics has developed high performance velocity and position controllers for induction motors, and succeeded in mass production for the first time in Korea. Dynamic performance and final control accuracy of the controller are equivalent to those of AC servo motor controller. At present, we adopted the controller as spindle motor drive for Samsung CNC systems, and expect its wide use in industry as general purpose velocity and position controller for induction motor.

박과 종자용 진공노즐식 파종기 개발(II) -대립종자의 종자보충, 정렬 및 파종성능시험 - (Development of Vacuum Nozzle Seeder for Cucuribitaceous Seeds(II) - Test of Seed feeding, Arranging and Sowing performance of large seeds -)

  • This study was carried out to develop a vacuum nozzle seeder for large seeds and performance was tested on seed feeding, arranging. and sowing peformance. The results of this study were as follows: The operation of feeding device of the seeder was programmed to operate a period of setting time after sowing 6 rows. The setting time was decided based on a discharged seed by the angular speed of feeding roller. The arranging accuracy of 'tuktozwa', 'hukjong' and 'chambak' was 96.4%, 95.2% and 89.4% respectively. The working performance was 75.6sheet/hr which was 3.8 times higher than that of manual work. An average seeding rate of 1 grain was 97.8%.

A surrogate model for the helium production rate in fast reactor MOX fuels

  • Helium production in the nuclear fuel matrix during irradiation plays a critical role in the design and performance of Gen-IV reactor fuel, as it represents a life-limiting factor for the operation of fuel pins. In this work, a surrogate model for the helium production rate in fast reactor MOX fuels is developed, targeting its inclusion in engineering tools such as fuel performance codes. This surrogate model is based on synthetic datasets obtained via the SCIANTIX burnup module. Such datasets are generated using Latin hypercube sampling to cover the range of input parameters (e.g., fuel initial composition, fission rate density, and irradiation time) and exploiting the low computation requirement of the burnup module itself. The surrogate model is verified against the SCIANTIX burnup module results for helium production with satisfactory performance.
