  • RFID security and privacy issues have been intensively studied in the research field, the authentication between RFID reader and tag is the fundamental them. Most of the existing authentication protocols draw assumptions on classic primitives. Since tags have small capacities, the security mechanisms which are in use in computer networks and communication are not suitable. In this paper, we compare and analyze recent technical research on the problems of privacy and security. It consists of security mechanism, threats and performance evaluation, etc.

  • This study intended to enhance understanding of concept and measurement of service quality and analyzed studies investigating dimension and attributes of service quality in both Korea and international foodservice industries. This study summarized many methodological issues related to service quality measurement, especially SERVQUAL. SERVQUAL has been criticized because performance-expectation difference operationalization threatened reliability and discriminant validity including shared method variance. Researcher suggests that future studies should understand clearly the concept of service quality and methodological issues of SERVQUAL prior to adapting SERVQUAL itself.

  • This paper presents a state-of-the-art review on the design, research and education aspects of fire safety engineering (FSE) with a particular concern on high-rise buildings. FSE finds its root after Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD, followed by Great London Fire in 1666. The development of modern FSE is continuously driven by industry revolution, insurance community and government regulations. Now FSE has become a unique engineering discipline and is moving towards performance-based design since 1990s. The performance-based fire safety design (PBFSD) involves identification of fire safety goals, design objectives, establishment of performance criteria, and selection of proper solutions for fire safety. The determination of fire scenarios and design fires have now become major contents for PBFSD. To experience a rapid and positive evolution in design and research consistent with other engineering disciplines, it is important for fire safety engineering as a profession to set up a special educational system to deliver the next-generation fire safety engineers. High-rise buildings have their unique fire safety issues such as rapid fire and smoke spread, extended evacuation time, longer fire duration, mixed occupancies, etc., bringing more difficulties in ensuring life safety and protection of property and environment. A list of recommendations is proposed to improve the fire safety of high-rise buildings. In addition, some source information for specific knowledge and information on FSE is provided in Appendix.

  • Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, has been lacking an adequate road network to ensure community access to social, political, and economic resources and to facilitate economic development. The road network coverage was about 22.5% in 2022, which is below the minimum international standard of 25%. To improve accessibility and mobility, the Addis Ababa City Roads Authority(AACRA) has engaged its own force crew (contractor), as well as local and foreign road contractors, in the construction of urban roads. However, these road construction projects are rarely completed within the estimated time and cost, along with a variety of other issues that also need to be addressed. This study aims to explore the application of lean construction for improving the performance of urban road construction projects in Addis Ababa City. A survey of road construction stakeholders was carried out to evaluate their perspectives on the importance of project performance indicators, with the goal of identifying key factors affecting road construction project performance. First, a list of performance indicators was prepared based on a review of lean construction literature, and a total of 38 identified factors were grouped into six performance indicator categories. Cross-tabulation analysis of the stakeholder perspectives was then carried out, and it was found that the indicators that affect the performance of urban road infrastructure projects (in descending order of importance) were: time, quality, cost, risk, safety, and sustainability. Through this analysis it was concluded that right-of-way issues, delay to finish, inflation, contractor capacity, and scope change with change order are also major factors that affect the performance of urban roads construction projects. Clarification of these factors will provide AACRA with useful information on what aspects of lean construction should be prioritized when evaluating future construction projects.

  • With the explosive growth in the volume of information, Internet users are experiencing considerable difficulties in obtaining necessary information online. Against this backdrop, ever-greater importance is being placed on a recommender system that provides information catered to user preferences and tastes in an attempt to address issues associated with information overload. To this end, a number of techniques have been proposed, including content-based filtering (CBF), demographic filtering (DF) and collaborative filtering (CF). Among them, CBF and DF require external information and thus cannot be applied to a variety of domains. CF, on the other hand, is widely used since it is relatively free from the domain constraint. The CF technique is broadly classified into memory-based CF, model-based CF and hybrid CF. Model-based CF addresses the drawbacks of CF by considering the Bayesian model, clustering model or dependency network model. This filtering technique not only improves the sparsity and scalability issues but also boosts predictive performance. However, it involves expensive model-building and results in a tradeoff between performance and scalability. Such tradeoff is attributed to reduced coverage, which is a type of sparsity issues. In addition, expensive model-building may lead to performance instability since changes in the domain environment cannot be immediately incorporated into the model due to high costs involved. Cumulative changes in the domain environment that have failed to be reflected eventually undermine system performance. This study incorporates the Markov model of transition probabilities and the concept of fuzzy clustering with CBCF to propose predictive clustering-based CF (PCCF) that solves the issues of reduced coverage and of unstable performance. The method improves performance instability by tracking the changes in user preferences and bridging the gap between the static model and dynamic users. Furthermore, the issue of reduced coverage also improves by expanding the coverage based on transition probabilities and clustering probabilities. The proposed method consists of four processes. First, user preferences are normalized in preference clustering. Second, changes in user preferences are detected from review score entries during preference transition detection. Third, user propensities are normalized using patterns of changes (propensities) in user preferences in propensity clustering. Lastly, the preference prediction model is developed to predict user preferences for items during preference prediction. The proposed method has been validated by testing the robustness of performance instability and scalability-performance tradeoff. The initial test compared and analyzed the performance of individual recommender systems each enabled by IBCF, CBCF, ICFEC and PCCF under an environment where data sparsity had been minimized. The following test adjusted the optimal number of clusters in CBCF, ICFEC and PCCF for a comparative analysis of subsequent changes in the system performance. The test results revealed that the suggested method produced insignificant improvement in performance in comparison with the existing techniques. In addition, it failed to achieve significant improvement in the standard deviation that indicates the degree of data fluctuation. Notwithstanding, it resulted in marked improvement over the existing techniques in terms of range that indicates the level of performance fluctuation. The level of performance fluctuation before and after the model generation improved by 51.31% in the initial test. Then in the following test, there has been 36.05% improvement in the level of performance fluctuation driven by the changes in the number of clusters. This signifies that the proposed method, despite the slight performance improvement, clearly offers better performance stability compared to the existing techniques. Further research on this study will be directed toward enhancing the recommendation performance that failed to demonstrate significant improvement over the existing techniques. The future research will consider the introduction of a high-dimensional parameter-free clustering algorithm or deep learning-based model in order to improve performance in recommendations.
