  • In the diagnosis of lung cancer, the tumor size is measured by the longest diameter of the tumor in the entire slice of the CT. In order to accurately estimate the size of the tumor, it is better to measure the volume, but there are some limitations in calculating the volume in the clinic. In this study, we propose an algorithm to segment lung cancer by applying a custom loss function that combines focal loss and dice loss to a U-Net model that shows high performance in segmentation problems in chest CT images. The combination of values of the various parameters in custom loss function was compared to the results of the model learned. The purposed loss function showed F1 score of 88.77%, precision of 87.31%, recall of 90.30% and average precision of 0.827 at α=0.25, γ=4, β=0.7. The performance of the proposed custom loss function showed good performance in lung cancer segmentation.

  • Using disturbance observer (DOB) is effective in enhancing the performance of dynamic system in the presence of disturbances. Recently the definition of disturbance has been expanded to modeling uncertainty including parameter variation, internal disturbance. Various structures of DOB have been proposed to improve sensitivity of system for better disturbance rejection performance. However in the case of improvement of sensitivity function, it tends to bring poor transient response due to cross-coupling and phase lag. Furthermore it could be very sensitive to measurement noise due to increased peak of complementary sensitivity function. In this paper, a dual disturbance observer (Dual-DOB) is proposed to reduce the effect of such cross-coupling. It is possible for us to improve the sensitivity function with additional external DOB with hardly affecting complementary sensitivity function. Thus it is able to have robustness against measurement noise. Since we are able to design DOBs of internal and external loop independently, we could prevent transient response quality from degrading while improving the sensitivity function. The proposed Dual-DOB is applied to a commercial optical disk drive tracking servo system. The experimental result shows that the Dual-DOB is an effective method in rejecting the disturbance as well as improving the tracking performance.

  • The objective of this study was to identify the effects of the cognitive performance of stroke patients on their motor function recovery after comprehensive rehabilitation management. The subjects of this study were 41 stroke in-patients of the Rehabilitation Hospital, College of Medicine, Yonsei University, hospitalized during the period from September 1, 1997 to May 5, 1998. The cognitive performance was measured using a Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE) and the motor function recovery using Motor Assessment Scale(MAS). The data were analyzed by the paired t-test, independent t-test, a one way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficiency. The findings were as follows: 1. There was a significant difference found in the motor function recovery level after the comprehensive rehabilitation management. 2. There was no significant difference found in relation to sex, age, cause of stroke, laterality of paralysis and the level of spasticity. However, there was a big difference between pre- and post-treatment regarding the treatment period. 3. In line with the cognitive performance level, there was a significant difference found in the motor function recovery level after the comprehensive rehabilitation management. 4. The correlation between the elements of the cognitive performance and the motor recovery was found to be high in orientation, attention, calculation, and language. Those elements were expected to give larger effects on motor recovery after the comprehensive rehabilitation management. Based on this study, the cognitive performance level was found to play an important role in bringing effects on motor recovery after the comprehensive rehabilitation management of stroke patients. And the evaluation on the motor recovery based on quality would be also expected to be examined, as well as the cognitive performance level test accompanied by Intelligence Quality(IQ) test.

  • [Purpose] This study investigated the effects of marine phytoplankton supplementation (Oceanix®, Tetraselmis chuii) on 1) maximal isometric strength and immune function in healthy humans following a oneweek high-intensity resistance-training program and 2) the proinflammatory cytokine response to exercise in a rat model. [Methods] In the human trial, 22 healthy male and female participants were randomly divided into marine phytoplankton and placebo groups. Following baseline testing, participants underwent a 14-day supplement loading phase before completing five consecutive days of intense resistance training. In the rat model, rats were randomly divided into four groups (n=7 per condition): (i) control, (ii) exercise, (iii) exercise + marine phytoplankton (2.55 mg/kg/day), or (iv) exercise + marine phytoplankton (5.1 mg/kg/day). Rats in the exercising groups performed treadmill exercise 5 days per week for 6 weeks. [Results] In the human model, marine phytoplankton prevented significant declines in the isometric peak rate of force development compared to placebo. Additionally, salivary immunoglobulin A concentration was significantly lower following the resistance training protocol in the placebo group but not in the marine phytoplankton group. Marine phytoplankton in exercising rats decreased intramuscular levels and serum concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and intramuscular concentrations of malondialdehyde. [Conclusion] Marine phytoplankton prevented decrements in indices of functional exercise recovery and immune function. Mechanistically, these outcomes could be prompted by modulating the oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokine response to exercise.

  • Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), including snoring, sleep apnea and upper airway resistance syndrome are common problems in children. The pathophysiological mechanism of SDB in children is unclear but may include hypoxemia and changes in sleep architecture. Children with SDB show reduced neurocognitive function, and memory and attentional capacity. Furthermore, these children show increased problematic behaviour and reduced school performance. Whether early recognition and treatment of SDB in children may improve neurocognitive function and school performance remains to be fully evaluated in the future.

  • This paper presents an autotuning algorithm of scaling factor in order to improve system performance. We define the scaling factor of fuzzy controller as a function of error and error change. This function is tuned by the output of performance evaluation level utilizing the error of overshoot and rising time. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has good tuning performance for a system with parameter change.
