  • A single specimen of Lepidocybium flavobrunneum (910.0 mm standard length) in the family Gempylidae, was collected off northwestern Jeju Island, Korea on April 28, 2016. The species is characterized by a blackish body, very low first dorsal fin spines, second dorsal fin rays followed by six finlets, anal fins followed by five finlets, caudal peduncle with a large keel flanked by two small supplementary keels, and a lateral line with an irregular wave pattern. Here, we propose the new Korean names "Heuk-gal-chi-ggo-chi-sok" for the genus Lepidocybium and "Heuk-gal-chi-ggo-chi" for the species L. flavobrunneum.

  • A single specimen (220.4 mm SL) of the bandfish Acanthocepola indica was collected near Maemul Island, off southeastern Korea. This species is characterized by having a serrated posterior margin of preopercle and a black blotch on anterior part of dorsal fin. It differs from two other species, A. limbata and A. krusensternii, in having a deeper body, 88 dorsal fin rays, and 101 anal fin rays. Our specimen of A. indica is the first record of the species from Korea, for which we propose the new Korean name "Nam-bang-hong-gal-chi."

  • A single specimen (506 mm SL) of Gempylus serpens, belonging to the family Gempylidae, order Perciformes, was firstly collected from Jeju Island, Korea in April 2013. This specimen was characterized by having the lower jaw protruded than upper jaw; three big fangs on upper jaw; five dorsal finlets and seven anal finlets; two lateral lines split at the dorsal origin, upper line interrupted at the end of the first dorsal fin, but lower line extend to the caudal fin base. The new Korean name "Se-jang-gal-chi-ggo-chi-sok" is proposed for the genus Gempylus, and "Se-jang-gal-chi-ggo-chi" for the species G. serpens.

  • The study aims at analyzing a species composition of the fish live in bottom of the coastal waters off Geomun island, Korea. To reach the goal of the study, a species composition and it's monthly fluctuation, a monthly fluctuation of the dominant species and it's appearance type was analyzed the fishes caught by the bottom trawl. The result obtained can be summerrized as follows; Fish caught in this area composes 14 orders, 34 families, and 47 species. The largest number of fish species was Perciformes (15 families and 19 species). The most dominant species in an number of fish was jhon dory, Zeus faber which was occupied at 22.5% from the whole number, the second most dominant species was horse mackerel, Trachurus japonicus which was occupied at 21.2%. Four groups were categorized based on appearance time period.

  • Two specimens of Scomberoides tol (99.0 mm and 124.5 mm in total length), belonging to the family Carangidae, order Perciformes were collected from Korean waters using a gape net with wings and a hand net between 2014 and 2017. These specimens are characterized by having the origin of the soft-rayed portion of the dorsal fin just above the origin of the soft-rayed portion of the anal fin, dorsal spines not connected by fin membranes and posterior end of the maxilla and upper jaw not extending beyond the posterior margin of the eye. A comparison of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences indicated that these specimens matched Scomberoides tol (K2P distance, d = 0.002), but differed from other Scomberoides species (6.9-9.1%). This is the first reliable report of Scomberoides tol from Korea.

  • This is the first report of Scomberoides lysan (Perciformes: Carangidae) from Korea. Two specimens (334 and 354 mm standard length) were collected by a set net from the coastal waters of Jejudo Island on 30 September, 2010. This species is characterized and distinguishable from a morphologically similar Scomberoides tol as follows. It has the posterior end of maxilla reaching to the posterior margin of eye (vs. not reaching in S. tol) and two rows of 5~8 small blotches on both sides of body (vs. one row of blotches). We add S. lysan to the Korean fish fauna and propose a new Korean name, "Du-jeom-jul-ga-si-jeon-gaeng-i" for the species because it has two series of dusk blotches on both sides of body.

  • One specimen of Emme1ichthys struhsakeri Heemstra and Randall belonging to the family Emmelichthyidae was collected for the first time from Cheju island, Korea. E. struhsakeri is similar to Erythroc1es schlegelii, but differs in some morphological characters: the presence of the keel on the caudal peduncle region, the presence of the three isolated short spines between spinous and soft dorsal fins.

  • Six specimens of Bathygobius hongkongensis were collected for the first time from the eastern coast of Jeju Island, Korea, in September-November 2017. This species is characterized by a pectoral fin with free rays and the division of the first dorsalmost pectoral free ray into three branches; a lower jaw with a mental frenum; and an anterior nostril with a tiny flap. Bathygobius hongkongensis is similar to B. fuscus but differs in having more dorsalmost free pectoral fin rays. The new Korean name proposed for B. hongkongensis is "Nam-bang-mu-nui-mang-duk."

  • One specimen of Epinephelus areolatus, belonging to the subfamily Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae, was collected by a hook from commercial longline fisheries in the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. This species is mostly similar to E. chlorostigma, but the former is distinguished from the latter by having larger brown spots and a white posterior margin on the caudal fin. We propose a new Korean name "Dae-moon-ba-ri" for E. areolatus.
