The subjective unwantedness felt from the noise sources in living environment has been evaluated by investigating the limit of perceptual loudness of the noise. The noise limits were selected by the subjects. And the noises were analyzed to find out whether there is any correlation with Zwicker parameters and ACF/IACF factors. It seemed that the loudness of noise from vacuum cleaner does not affect its perceives noisiness. Traffic noise also seems to be less influential in annoyance rating. It was resealed that floor impact noise generated by bang machine is the most irritating noise that can be heard in residential buildings.

In real environment, background noise exists everywhere and degrades the performance of system. To reduce this distortion, a speech enhancement algorithm can be very useful and variety methods have been proposed. In this paper, we propose a postfilter to improve the performance of optimally modified log-spectral amplitude (OM-LSA) estimator. Proposed algorithm uses the formant postfilter to minimize perceptual distortion caused by background noise. We adjust an emphasizing parameter which is varied by spectral flatness and first reflection coefficient. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by measuring the log-spectral distance (LSD) and the perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) score. The test results show the improvement of proposed algorithm compared to conventional OM-LSA.
According to a popularization of the Internet and digital lifestyle, digital watermarks have been proposed for protection of copyrighted multimedia content. In blind watermark detection, which an original image is not provided, robustness against geometric distortion and compression remains challenging. In this paper, we propose a new perceptual blind discrete wavelet transform - discrete Fourier transform (DWT-DFT) composite watermarking scheme that is robust against both general linear transform and JPEG compression. This algorithm constructs an image-dependent watermark in the most significant DWT coefficients, which is determined by using a hierarchical tree structure. Strength of watermark is determined from a just-noticeable difference (JND) profile of a perceptual model. Furthermore, a desired template is inserted into DFT domain of the watermarked image. In new manner, a cross-ratio of four collinear points is used for detecting the template. Experimental results have showed that the proposed scheme is robust against general linear distortion, JPEG compression and various general kinds of attacks in the Stirmark 3.1 watermark evaluation tool.

This paper proposes a quality metric based on a No-Reference Bitstream (NR-B) having least computational complexity for the assessment of the human-perceptual quality of H.264 encoded video. The proposed NR-B method performs a modeling of encoding distortion with three bit-stream information (i.e. frame-rate, motion-vector, and quantization-parameter) that can be directly extractable from the encoded bitstream and does not require additional complex processing of final pictures. From performance evaluation using 165 compressed video sequences, the experiment results show that the proposed metric has a higher correlation with subjective quality than is achieved with other comparable methods.
The acoustic parameters of nine Korean numbers were analyzed by Praat, a speech analysis software, and synthesized by SenSynPPC, a Klatt formant synthesizer. The overall intensity, pitch and formant values of the numbers were modified dynamically by a step of 1 dB, 1 Hz and 2.5% respectively. The study explored the sensitivity of listeners to changes in the three acoustic parameters. Twelve subjects (male and female) listened to 390 pairs of synthesized numbers and judged whether the given pair sounded the same or different. Results showed that subjects perceived the same sound quality within the range of 6.6 dB of intensity variation, 10.5 Hz of pitch variation and 5.9% of the first three formant variations. The male and female groups showed almost the same perceptual ranges. Also, an asymmetrical structure of high and low boundary was observed. The ranges may be applicable to the development of a speaker identification system while the method of synthesis modification may apply to its evaluation data.
Up to now, several tools to evaluate visual perception tests have been introduced for different purposes. However, they were mostly manual tools, paper books in which the therapists would turn the pages while working together with patients. This paper discusses a potential plan to develop motor-free visual perception test software for Korean patients with brain injury, and to construct a centralized database for their evaluated data in a client/server environment. Through its development, we eventually hope to achieve effective management of the data for better understanding of patients' visual perceptual skills and the standardization of the evaluation for Korean patients. With the help of the computerized environment, we also expect some advantages such as acquisition of reliable results from patients with brain injury, automation for storing and accessing patients' data, construction of the patients' database and the management of a vast amount of the data within it and the provision of a foundation to promote further development of various perceptual-cognitive rehabilitation programs.

With the advancement of autonomous vehicle (AV) technology, autonomous driving on real roads has become feasible. However, there are challenges in achieving complete autonomy due to perceptual blind areas, which occur when the AV's sensory range or capabilities are limited or impaired by surrounding objects or environmental factors. This study aims to analyze AV accident patterns and safety issues of perceptual blind area that may occur in urban areas, with the goal of developing test scenarios for Level 4+ autonomous driving. It utilized AV accident data from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to compare accident patterns and characteristics between AVs and conventional vehicles based on activation status of autonomous mode. It also categorized AV disengagement data to identify types and real-world cases of disengagements caused by perceptual blind areas. The analysis revealed that AVs exhibit different accident types due to their safe driving maneuvers, and three types of perceptual blind area scenarios were identified. The findings of this study serve as crucial foundational data for developing Level 4+ autonomous driving test scenarios, enabling the design of efficient strategies to mitigate perceptual blind areas in various scenarios. This, in turn, is expected to contribute to the effective evaluation and enhancement of AV driving safety on real roads.
The studies on impression formation usually have focused on the effect of certain appearance features which elevates perceptual evaluation. This study tried to find out whether there is a consensus on impression formation between the perceived person and the perceiver and if the gender is any significant variable to cast any difference on the impression evaluation. Seven photos of voluntary students in ppt file were projected to 143 students attending a university psychology class and were subjected to a impression evaluation questionnaire consisting of 28 adjective scales. The analysis of result revealed: 1) There was a significant difference between the impression evaluation scores of the perceivers and the perceived; the self evaluation of the perceived person was higher than the perceivers' evaluation. 2) There was also a significant evaluation score difference between the genders of the perceivers; the female perceivers rated the stimuli higher than the male perceivers. There was no interaction effect between the genders of the perceivers and the perceived.
This paper proposes a noise suppression method through SNR (Singal-to Noise Ratio) estimation in the two microphone array environment of close spacing. The conventional method uses a noise suppression method for a gain function obtained through the SNR estimation based on coherence function from full band. However, this method cause performance decreased by the noise damage that affects all the feature vector component. So, we propose a noise suppression method that allocates a frequency domain signal into N constant multi frequency band and each frequency band gets a gain function through SNR estimation based on coherence function. Performance evaluation of the proposed method is shown by comparison with PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) value which is an objective quality evaluation method provided by the ITU-T (International Telecommunications Union Telecommunication).
This paper proposes a speech enhancement method through the process of combining the gain function with spectrum subtraction method in the two microphone array with close spacing. A speech enhancement method that uses a gain function estimated by the SNR (Signal-to Noise Ratio) based on the multi frequency band coherence function causes the performance degradation in high correlation between input noises of two channels. A new speech enhancement method is proposed where the weighted gain function is used by combining the gain function from the spectral subtraction. The performance evaluation of the proposed method was shown by comparison with PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) value which is an objective quality evaluation test provided by the ITU-T (International Telecommunications Union Telecommunication). In the PESQ tests, the maximum 0.217 of PESQ value is improved in the various background noise environments.
