  • Regarding menopause as a turning point in woman's lift, the author reviewed the psychosocial aspects of menopause. Seeing menstruation as the symbolic meaning of female sexuality, psychoanalysts argue that menopause, the loss of symbolic meaning of female sexuality, may bring a mourning reaction to woman. It is reported that the high ratio of depression does not have a serious relationship with the menopause syndrome, and that depression cannot be viewed as a different symptoms. It is also proved that most women successfully recover themselves from temporary menopause symptom. Research data shows that some women have a negative thought on the meaning of menopause. Others, however, have a positive concept on the meaning of menopause because of the feeling of release and freedom. In sum, the author suggests that psychosocial consideration is very important as much as bilogical consideration in considering the meaning of menopausal syndrome.

  • This paper investigates the effects of small group collaborative transcription activities on the improvement of university students' English listening ability. Based on the results of pre-tests, a class of 42 students was subdivided into 11 small homogeneous groups of three to four students. Each group was provided with 7 different news items to be transcribed. Means were compared between pre-test and post-test scores, followed by comparison of transcription errors in content and function words. Finally, students' perception and attitudes about the use of small group transcription for improving listening skills were qualitatively analysed and compared with pre- and post test results. It was found that post test scores highly correlated with improvement of listening ability. It was also found that groups of high degree of collaboration showed improvement in listening ability while lack of collaboration contributed to loss of interests in listening. Students who see process more important were found to make more contribution to the group success than those who place more emphasis on the results.

  • Loss of human lives and properties including environmental damage due to large scale accidents requires change of our perception to marine safety. IMO is trying to re-establish overall marine safety system through long term plan such as GBS. Along this line, current regulation based safety evaluation is in process of changing into performance based methods, and for this transition, simulation based safety evaluation during design stage considering damage is highly necessary. In this paper, first, damage scenario is developed from IMO regulations and accident case studies. Then an integrated and simulation based safety evaluation prototype system considering both damage stability and structural safety is developed for the use during ship design process.

  • Detecting and assessing human-related risks is critical to improve the on-site safety condition and reduce the loss in lives, time and budget for construction industry. Recent research in neural science and psychology suggest inattentional blindness that caused by overload in working memory is the major cause of unexpected human related accidents. Due to the limitation of human mental workload, laborers are vulnerable to unexpected hazards while focusing on complicated and dangerous construction tasks. Therefore, detecting the risk perception abilities of workers could help to identify vulnerable individuals and reduce unexpected injuries. However, there are no available measurement approaches or devices capable of monitoring construction workers' mental conditions. The research proposed in this paper aims to develop such a measurement framework to evaluate hazards through monitoring electroencephalogram of labors. The research team developed a wearable safety monitoring helmet, which can collect the brain waves of users for analysis. A bispectrum approach has been developed in this paper to enrich the data source and improve accuracy.

  • Failures occur in dentistry as a result of manny factors some of which can be controlled by the operator whilst others are unavoidable. The long-term success rate of endodontic treatment has often been thought to be very high although studies reported in the literature do not support this perception. The number of failure can be reduced by adhereing to accepted treatment procedures and by avoiding 'short cut'. Endodontic disaters are usually related to operator errors and they mat have detrimental effects on the outcome of treatment in the long term, eventually becoming catastrophes. Endodontic disasters will require special techniques to salvage them whereas catastrophes usually result in loss of the tooth and every effort should be made to prevent such problems from occurring. This presentation will cover common errors in endodontic procedures especially access opening, canal negotiation, canal irrigation, canal preparation, canal filling, post preparation.ration.

  • Congestion in WSN increases energy dissipation rates of sensor nodes as well as loss of packets and thereby hinders fair and reliable event detections. We find that one of the key reasons of congestion in WSN is allowing sensing nodes to transfer as many packets as possible. This is due to the use of CSMA/CA that gives opportunistic media access control. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient congestion avoidance protocol that includes source count based hierarchical and load adaptive medium access control. Our proposed mechanism ensures load adaptive media access to the nodes and thus achieves fairness in event detection. The results of simulation show our scheme exhibits more than 90% delivery ratio with retry limit 1, even under bursty traffic condition which is good enough for reliable event perception.

  • This paper presents an image quality enhancement algorithm for dark image acquired under poor lighting condition. Various retinex algorithms which are human perception-based image processing methods were proposed to solve this problem. Although MSR(Multi-Scale Retinex) among these algorithm works well under most lighting condition, it shows color degradation because their separate nonlinear processing of RGB color channels. To compensate for the loss of the color, MSRCR(Multi-Scale Retinex with Color Restoration) was proposed. However, it requires high computational load and has additional parameters that need to be adjusted according to input image. In order to overcome this problem, a new retinex algorithm based on MSR is proposed in this paper. The proposed method consists of V channel MSR, saturation correction, and separate contrast enhancement process. Experimental results show that the subjective and objective image quality of the proposed method better than those of the conventional methods.

  • This paper presents a new method which compensates loss of loudness for digital hearing aids. Loudness grows more rapidly in frequency domain with substantial shifts of hearing threshold, so that loud sounds reach the uncomfortable sound level (UCL) at about the same physical stimulus level as with normal hearing. The result is a compression of the available dynamic range of hearing. Many techniques have been developed to compensate for hearing losses. In this paper, we propose a digital hearing aid which uses a single digital filter for reducing distortion and the fuzzy function to calculate gain factors. This function describes how much gain is needed for every frequency to restore loudness perception of a normal ear.

  • Frequency transposition (FT) hearing system was designed for individuals with little or no residual hearing at high frequencies. This device compresses and shifts the wide-band, high frequency acoustic energy where important features for speech perception are concentrated to the audible, lower range of frequencies. The usefulness of the FT system was investigated for 12 patients (7 children and 5 adults) with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing losses compared with conventional hearing aids. Results suggest that the hearing impaired can benefit from the FT system with appropriate selection criteria and auditory (re)habilitation program.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the BMI, diet perception and diet behavior of female university students. A descriptive survey design was used 165 students from October 29 to November 9, 2018. Data were analyzed using mean, t-test, ANOVA, cross analysis with SPSS 21.0. Total diet perception was 3.44 points, highest sub category was 'practice' with 4.00 points, followed by 'information and education' with 3.58 points, 'necessity' with 3.32 points and lowest category was 'self-recognition' with 2.84. 65 students(43.0%) were 'less than three times' in 'Number of diets' and diet methods was 65(43.0%) for 'food control' and 62(41.1%) for 'exercise'. During in a week, 98 students(84.9%) exercised within three hours, followed by 33(21.9%) who did not exercised at all. 22 students(14.6%) said they experienced damage from dieting, while the types included gastrointestinal disease, menstrual irregularity and hair loss. The total score of diet perception according to BMI was lower in the underweight group than in the normal and overweight groups(p<.001). In diet 'practice' category, low weight group scored lower than normal weight and overweight groups(p<.05). In 'information and education' category, overweight group scored the highest, followed by normal and underweight groups(p<.001). In diet 'necessity' and 'self-recognition' categories, low weight group scored lower than normal weight and overweight groups(p<.001). Diet behavior by diet perception was different in number and method of diet(p<.001). Based on the results, it is thought that attention and education are needed to form a proper diet perception and maintain healthy living for female university students.
