The research field of structural control has evolved from the development of passive devices since 1970s, through the intensive investigation on active systems in 1980s, to the recent studies of semi-active control systems in 1990s. Currently semi-active control is considered most promising in civil engineering applications. However, actual implementation of semi-active devices is still limited due mainly to their system maintenance and associated long-term reliability as a result of power requirement. In this paper, the concept of functionally upgraded passive devices is introduced to streamline some of the state-of-the-art researches and guide the development of new passive devices that can mimic the function of their corresponding semi-active control devices for various applications. The general characteristics of this special group of passive devices are discussed and representative examples are summarized. Their superior performances are illustrated with cyclic and shake table tests of two example devices: mass-variable tuned liquid damper and friction-pendulum bearing with a variable sliding surface curvature.

Seismic performances of the base isolated model of Five Story Stone Pagoda were studied through shaking table tests. Friction pendulum system (FPS), Pure-friction system with laminated rubber bearing (LRB) and Ball with rubber bearing were selected fur the comparison of performances. Performances of specially designed isolation systems were tested dynamically using shaking table. The test results of isolated model are compared with those of fixed base model. Compared with fixed base model, the isolated model showed that it could withstand much higer intensity of earthquake motion. The Effective Peak Ground Acceleration (EPGA) value of isolated model when the top component tipped over was above twice of that value in case of fixed base model. According to the additional test results, the lower value of coefficient of friction than that of common frictional base isolation systems is more effective to protect the piled multi-block system of Pagoda against moderate intesity of ground motion.

An experimental study was performed to evaluate seismic reduction performance and the applicability of 2-dimensional floor isolation system to the main control room of a nuclear power plant. A lead-rubber bearing (LRB) and a friction pendulum system (FPS) were designed and fabricated for a 2-dimensional floor isolation system. A partial experimental model of a main control room with the LRB and FPS was tested using a shaking table. The experimental model consisted of a control panel, a 2.5m${\times}$2.5m access floor, and four LRB and FPS. The artificial time histories based on the horizontal floor response spectrums (OBE, SSE) of the main control room were used as earthquake input signals. Compared to the non-isolated system, the seismic response of experimental models using a 2-dimensional floor isolation system showed considerable seismic reduction performance against an earthquake.

The most effective passive vibration control and seismic resistance options in a reinforced concrete (RC) high-rise building (HRB) are the base isolation and the tuned mass damper (TMD) system. Many options, which may be suitable or not for different soil types, with different types of bearing systems, like rubber isolator, friction pendulum isolator and tension/compression isolator, are investigated to resist the base straining actions under five different earthquakes. TMD resists the seismic response, as a control system, by reducing top displacement or the total movement of the structure. Base isolation and TMDs work under seismic load in a different way, so the combination between base isolation and TMDs will reduce the harmful effect of the earthquakes in an effective and systematic way. In this paper, a comprehensive study of the combination of TMDs with three different base-isolator types for three different soil types and under five different earthquakes is conducted. The seismic response results under five different earthquakes of the studied nine RC HRB models (depicted by the top displacement, base shear force and base bending moment) are compared to show the most suitable hybrid passive vibration control system for three different soil types.

This paper summarizes a study on the application of the friction pendulum system in bridge seismic isolation. Shaking table tests have been carried out on a model structure isolated with F.P.S and the obtained structural responses are compared to those of non-isolated. It can be concluded the F.P.S increases the earthquake resistance capacity of the isolated structure. It is also found that the stiffness of bearing, being controlled by the radius of curvature of the spherical sliding interface, is unaffected by the amplitude of the input excitation. Furthermore, the coefficient of sliding friction is velocity dependent so that in weak excitation the sliding velocity is low and, accordingly, the mobilized friction force is less than the one mobilized in strong excitation. Also, the frictional properties of the bearings remain markedly stable after extensive testing, and the permanent displacements are small and not cumulative in successive earthquakes.
Since the isolation bearings undergo large displacements in base-isolated structures, impact with adjacent structures is inevitable. Therefore, in this investigation, the effect of impact on seismic response of isolated structures mounted on double concave friction pendulum (DCFP) bearings subjected to near field ground motions is considered. A non-linear viscoelastic model of collision is used to simulate structural pounding more accurately. 2-, 4- and 8-story base-isolated buildings adjacent to fixed-base structures are modeled and the coupled differential equations of motion related to these isolated systems are solved in the MATLAB environment using the SIMULINK toolbox. The variation of seismic responses such as base shear, displacement in the isolation system and superstructure (top floor) is computed to study the impact condition. Also, the effects of variation of system parameters: isolation period, superstructure period, size of seismic gap between two structures, radius of curvature of the sliding surface and friction coefficient of isolator are contemplated in this study. It is concluded that the normalized base shear, bearing and top floor displacement increase due to impact with adjacent structure. When the distance between two structures decreases, the base shear and displacement increase comparing to no impact condition. Besides, the increase in friction coefficient difference also causes the normalized base shear and displacement in isolation system and superstructure increase in comparison with bi-linear hysteretic behavior of base isolation system. Totally, the comparison of results indicates that the changes in values of friction coefficient have more significant effects on 2-story building than 4- and 8-story buildings.
Purpose: The evaluation of seismic performance of critical structures has been emerging a key issue in Korea, since a magnitude 5.8 earthquake, the worst in Koran history, struck Gyeongju, southern area in Korea on september 12th, 2016. In particular, the catastrophic failure of nonstructural components such as sprinkler piping systems can cause significant economic loss or loss of life during and after an earthquake. The nonstructural components can be more fragile than structural components in seismic behavior. Method: This study presents the seismic performance evaluation of fire protection piping system, using coupled building-piping system installed with Triple Friction Pendulum Bearings (TPBs). Kobe (Japan), Kocaeli (Turkey), and GyeongJu (Korea) were selected to consider the uncertainty of ground motions in this study. Result: In the simulation results, it was observed that the reduction of maximum displacements of the piping system with the TPBs' system was significant: Kobe, Kocaeli, and Gyeongju cases were 49%, 14.4% and 21.5%, respectively. Conclusion: Therefore, using seismically isolated system in a building-piping system can be more effective to reduce the seismic risk than a normally installed building-piping systems without TPBs in strong earthquakes.
Base isolation technologies have been proven to be very efficient in protecting structures from seismic hazards during experimental and theoretical studies. In recent years, there have been more and more engineering applications using base isolators to upgrade the seismic resistibility of structures. Optimum design of the base isolator can lessen the undesirable seismic hazard with the most efficiency. Hence, tracing the nonlinear behavior of the base isolator with good accuracy is important in the engineering profession. In order to predict the nonlinear behavior of base isolated structures precisely, hundreds even thousands of degrees-of-freedom and iterative algorithm are required for nonlinear time history analysis. In view of this, a simple and feasible exact formulation without any iteration has been proposed in this study to calculate the seismic responses of structures with base isolators. Comparison between the experimental results from shaking table tests conducted at National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering in Taiwan and the analytical results show that the proposed method can accurately simulate the seismic behavior of base isolated structures with elastomeric bearings. Furthermore, it is also shown that the proposed method can predict the nonlinear behavior of the VCFPS isolated structure with accuracy as compared to that from the nonlinear finite element program. Therefore, the proposed concept can be used as a simple and practical tool for engineering professions for designing the elastomeric bearing as well as sliding bearing.

Seismic performance of base isolated rigid-mass model were studied through shaking table tests. Friction pendulum systems (FPS), pure-friction systems with laminated rubber bearing (LRB) were selected for the comparison of performance. Performance of specially designed isolation systems were tested statically using actuator and dynamically using shaking table. Numerical methods were developed to simulate the nonlinear behavior of the frictional base isolation systems. Two models were considered. one is modified Bouc-Wen model considering breakaway coefficient of friction and the other is classical Coulomb model. The results of numerical methods are found to be in very good agreement with test results.

The demand of natural gas is gradually increasing as a clean fuel in the world. Therefore, LNG storage tanks and related facilities of the importance of leading a community-based facility have emerged. The seismic design of LNG storage tank including seismic analysis have been developed steadily. But, the seismic analysis and design techniques for LNG storage tanks are lacking, in Korea. Consequently, it is necessary to develop an analysis model that LNG storage tanks in isolation system can describe the behavior. Further, LNG storage tank capable of ensuring safety and economy, it is necessary to develop design techniques. The studies have suggested seismic design procedures of LNG storage tanks with isolation system including triple-FPB and idealized complex hysteresis model of triple-FPB.
