In this study, a particle image velocimetry (PIV)-based pressure estimation method was investigated, with application to the wave-in-deck loading phenomenon. An experimental study was performed in a two-dimensional wave tank using a fixed deck structure under a focused wave, obtaining local pressures by pressure sensors, global loads by load cells, and instantaneous velocity fields using the PIV measurement technique. The PIV-based pressure estimation method was applied using the Euler equation as the governing equation, and the proper time step for the wave impact pressure was studied using the normalized root-mean-square deviation. The pressure estimation method showed good agreement for the local impact pressure in comparison with the measured pressure by the pressure sensors. However, some differences were observed in the peak pressure due to the limitations of the Euler equation and the sampling rate of the measurement system. Using the estimation method, the pressure fields during wave-in-deck loading were determined in the study, with an analysis of the mechanism of impact and negative pressure occurrence.

The rapid development of road transport has increased the number of bridges that require widening. A critical issue in the construction of bridge widening is the influence of vibrations of the old bridge on the casting of wet joint concrete between the old and new bridges owing to the running traffic. Typically, the bridge is closed to traffic during the pouring of wet joint concrete, which negatively affects the existing transportation network. In this study, a newly developed microscopic traffic load modeling approach and the vehicle-bridge interaction theory are incorporated to develop a refined numerical framework for the analysis of random traffic-bridge coupled dynamics. This framework was used to investigate traffic-induced vibrations at the wet joint of a widened bridge. Based on an experimental study on the vibration resistance of wet joint concrete, traffic control strategies were proposed to ensure the construction performance of cast-in-site wet joint concrete under random traffic without interruption. The results show that the vibration displacement and frequency of the old bridge, estimated by the proposed framework, were comparable with those obtained from field measurements. Based on the target peak particle velocity and vibration amplitude of the wet joint concrete, it was found that traffic control measures, such as limiting vehicle gross weight and limiting traffic volume by closing an additional traffic lane, could ensure the construction performance of the wet joint concrete.

Flow structures around a rectangular prism have been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. A thick turbulent boundary layer was generated by using spires arid roughness elements. The boundary layer thickness, displacement thickness and momentum thickness were 650mm, 117.4mm and 78mm, respectively. The ratio between the model height(40mm) and the boundary layer thickness H/$\delta$, was 0.06. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and the height of the model was 7.9$\times$10$^3$. The PIV measurements were performed at three different wall normal planes. Three recirculation regions at forward facing step, top of the roof and backward facing step are clearly seen and show three dimensional features. Dramatic changes of flow patterns are observed in the wake regions in the different spanwise wall normal planes. Instead of reattachment and recirculation zone, rising streamlines are depicted at the normal planes near the side wall due to the interaction with a rising horse shoe vortex. The peak of turbulent kinetic energy occurs at the separation bubble on top of the roof and the magnitude is 2.5 times higher compared with that of the wake region.
The typical blasting method adopted in Pasir Coal Mine is a surface blasting technique with a single free face. It means that there is only one free face, which is usually the ground surface. This kind of blasting method is easy to use but inevitably causes enormous ground vibrations, which, in turn, can affect the stability of the slopes comprising the various boundaries of the open pit mine. In addition, the method also has the problem of lowering the overall blast efficiency compared to other methods such as bench blasting methods or ones with more than two free faces. In this respect, a project was launched to develop a new blasting method that is suitable for both controling the ground vibration and enhancing the blast efficiency. As a part of the project, we investigated the current blasting method of the mine, and have conducted field measurements of the ground vibrations from 12 biasts. This Paper presents the details of the typical blasting pattern and the Propagation characteristics of the ground vibration from the surface blasting in the mine. Especially, various predictive equations for peak Particle velocities that can be used to estimate the ground vibration level in the mine area were derived from the regression analyses using the measured ground vibration data.

In evaluation of blast-induced vibration, peak particle velocity (PPV) is generally calculated by using attenuation relation curve. Calculated velocity is compared with the value in legal requirements or the standards to determine the stability. Attenuation relation curve varies depending on frequency of test blasting, geological structure of the site and blasting condition, so it is difficult to predict accurately using such an equation. Since PPV is response value from the ground, direct evaluation of the structure is impractical. Because of such a limit, engineers tend to use the commercial numerical analysis program in evaluating the stability of the structure more accurately. However, when simulate the explosion process using existing numerical analysis program, it's never easy to accurately simulate the complex conditions (fracture, crushing, cracks and plastic deformation) around blasting hole. For simulating such a process, the range for modelling will be limited due to the maximum node count and it requires extended calculation time as well. Thus, this study is intended to simulate the elastic energy after fractured zone only, instead of simulating the complex conditions of the rock that results from the blast, and the analysis of response characteristics of the velocity depending on shape and size of the fractured zone was conducted. As a result, difference in velocity and attenuation character were calculated depending on fractured zone around the blast source appeared. Propagation of vibration tended to spread spherically as it is distanced farther from the blast source.
In this study, 16 test blastings had been carried out with different spacings, burdens, drilling lengths, and charges per delay for investigating the characteristics of ground vibration propagation, which depends on the delay time. From the tests, it was possible to derive a ground vibration equation. Using the equation, the characteristics of ground vibration could be investigated by analyzing the nomogram and predicting the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV), which are influenced by the delay time and the priming location. The trend of ground vibration change depending on the delay time was analyzed for the standards charges of 0.5, 1.6, 5, and 15 kg, which were suggested in "Blasting design and construction guidelines to road construction" by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. From the study, it would be possible to suggest a favorable vibration control method, which depends on the charge.
In general, Cerenkov light is produced by a charged particle that passes through a medium with a velocity greater than that of visible light. Although the wavelength of Cerenkov light is very broad, the peak is in the almost visible range from 400 to 480 nm. Therefore, it always causes a problem to detect a real light signal that is generated in the scintillator on the fiber-optic sensor tip for dose measurements of high-energy electron beam. The objectives of this study are to measure, characterize and remove Cerenkov light generated in a fiber-optic radiation sensor tip to detect a real light signal from the scintillator. In this study, the intensity of Cerenkov light is measured and characterized as a function of incident angle of electron beam from a LINAC, and as a function of the energy of electron beam. As a measuring device, a photodiode-amplifier system is used, and a subtraction method using a background optical fiber is investigated to remove Cerenkov light.
In this study, the influence of priming location inside a blast hole on the ground vibration has been studied. In most of the previous studies dealing with the ground vibration, the effect of priming location in a blast hole was usually considered in a limited way. Thus, it seems that the results of the studies can be applicable only to the relevant sites. Considering the fact that the mechanism of ground vibration caused by blasting is quite complex, the priming location can have a considerable effect on the ground vibration in certain situations and be an important parameter in a blasting design. To identify the characteristics of the wave propagation according to priming locations, total 72 test blasts were carried out with different spacing, burden, drilling length, and charge, and prediction equations were derived. The characteristics of ground vibration, which was changed according to the priming location, was analyzed by using the nomogram of peak particle velocity (PPV) record. Attenuation relations, which were also dependent on the priming location, were analyzed. In this case, four different amounts of charge, that is, 0.5, 1.6, 5, and 15 kg, were used for the test. This criterion of charge amount is specified in the "Blasting design and construction guidelines to road construction" by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs of Korea.

With the deterioration and functional loss of structures, there is an increasing demand for demolition and various demolition technologies have been developed. In case of a large-scale concrete foundation, application of some mechanical demolition techniques is limited because of the structural characteristics, and explosive demolition or explosive demolition combined with mechanical demolition is applied recently due to the effect to the surrounding environment by the ground vibration. In this study, we compared peak particle velocity of ground vibration depending on average fragment size in case of explosive demolition design for large-scale concrete foundation using the relation among specific charge, charge constant and transmitting medium constant as well as the relation between average concrete fragment size and specific charge.

Phenomena induced by waves, such as overtopping, sediment transport, vibration/fluctuation and destruction of structures are highly influenced by the directionality of wave propagation. These phenomena are often dominated by non-linearity, and so hydraulic model experiments are widely adopted for stability analysis rather than numerical modeling, Thus, stability ofrubblc mound breakwaters(RMB) due to wavc directionality was experimentally investigated in this study. The incident wave angle $30^{\circ}$ was found more risky on the damage rate of RMB under directional regular waves, and the incident wave angle $40^{\circ}$ was found relatively risky under directional irregular waves. These results clarified the wave directionality effect on the stability ofRMB, These facts were found correspondent to the occurrence of the peak between $20^{\circ}$-$40^{\circ}$ with the directional frequency distribution of lIlO maximum water particle velocity.
