A novel potential linking ligand (4-nitro-benzylidene)-(3-nitro-phenyl)-amine (1) was prepared from 4-nitrobenzaldehyde and 3-nitroaniline by the Schiff-base condensation. From the reaction between 1 and dichlorobis(benzonitrile)palladium (II) $(PdCl_2(NCPh)_2)$, an unexpected product $trans-PdCl_2(NO_2-C_6H_4-NH_2)_2$ (2) was isolated. Compounds 1 and 2 were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. In compound 2, the $NH_2$ hydrogen atoms in the 3-nitroaniline ligand participate in intermolecular N-H${\cdot}\;{\cdot}\;{\cdot}\;$Cl hydrogen bonds.
Pd-POSS nanoparticles were produced from the reaction of palladium (II) acetate and octa(3-aminopropyl)octasilsesquioxane octahydrochloride (POSS-${NH_3}^+$) in methanol at room temperature. Pd-POSS nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 60-80 nm were the highly ordered spherical aggregates. In contrast, Pd nanoparticles with a size of 4.0 nm were obtained when POSS-${NH_3}^+$ was not introduced. Pd-POSS/PAA nanocomposites of Pd-POSS nanoparticles and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were fabricated by utilizing ionic interactions between positively charged Pd-POSS nanoparticles and negatively charged carboxylate groups of PAA. PAA was used as a cross-linker for the preparation of hybrid nanocomposites with the controlled organized structures of Pd-POSS nanoparticles. That is, the self-organization of Pd-POSS nanoparticles was formed into the shape of continuous lines by using PAA as a cross-linker. The composition, structure, surface morphology, and thermal stability of the Pd-POSS/PAA nanocomposites were studied by FE-SEM, AFM, TEM, FT-IR, and TGA.

Complexes synthesized by reacting alkyl and aryl phosphines with different transition metals are of great interest due to their catalytic properties. Many of the phosphine complexes are soluble in polar solvents as a result they find applications in homogeneous catalysis. In our present work we report, four transition metal complexes of Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II) and Ru(II) with an asymmetrical ditertiaryphosphine ligand. The synthesized ligand bears a less electronegative substituent such as methyl group on the aromatic nucleus hence makes it a strong ${\sigma}$-donor to form stable complexes and thus could effectively used in catalytic reactions. The complexes have been completely characterized by elemental analyses, FTIR, $^1HNMR$, $^{31}PNMR$ and FAB Mass Spectrometry methods. Based on the spectroscopic evidences it has been confirmed that Ni(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes with the ditertiaryphosphine ligand showed cis whereas the Ru(II) complex showed trans geometry in their molecular structure.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of metal primers on the bonding of dental alloys and veneer resin. Polyvinylpyrrolidone solution's tarnish effect on bonding strength was also investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Disk-shape metal specimens (diameter 8 mm, thickness 1.5 mm) were made from 3 kinds of alloy (Co-Cr, Ti and Au-Ag-Pd alloy) and divided into 4 groups per each alloy. Half specimens (n=12 per group) in tarnished group were immersed into polyvinylpyrrolidone solution for 24 hours. In Co-Cr and Ti-alloy, Alloy Primer (MDP + VBATDT) and MAC-Bond II (MAC-10) were applied, while Alloy Primer and V-Primer (VBATDT) were applied to Au-Ag-Pd alloys. After surface treatment, veneering composite resin were applied and shear bond strength test were conducted. RESULTS. Alloy Primer showed higher shear bond strength than MAC-Bond II in Co-Cr alloys and Au-Ag-Pd alloy (P<.05). However, in Ti alloy, there was no significant difference between Alloy Primer and MAC-Bond II. Tarnished Co-Cr and Au-Ag-Pd alloy surfaces presented significantly decreased shear bond strength. CONCLUSION. Combined use of MDP and VBATDT were effective in bonding of the resin to Co-Cr and Au-Ag-Pd alloy. Tarnish using polyvinylpyrrolidone solution negatively affected on the bonding of veneer resin to Co-Cr and Au-Ag-Pd alloys.
The oxalate precipitation of lanthanide and actinide by oxalic acid was investigated in the simulated radioactive liquid waste, which was composed of 17 elements of alkali, alkaline earth(Cs, Rb, Ba, Sr), transition metal(Zr, Fe, Mo, Ni, Pd, Rh), lanthanide(La, Y, Nd, Ce, Eu) and actinide(Np, Am) in nitric acid solution. The effect of concentrations of nitric acid and ascorbic acid on the precipitation yield of each element in the simulated solution was examined at 0.5 M oxalic acid concentration. The precipitation yields of the elements were usually decreased with nitric acid concentration, nevertheless, the precipitation yields of lanthanide and actinide were more than 99%. Palladium was precipitated due to the reduction of Pd(II) into Pd metal by the addition of ascorbic acid in the oxalate precipitation and then, the precipitation yields of Mo, Fe, Ni, Ba decreased by 10~20% with concentration of ascorbic acid. The reductive precipitation of Pd(II) into Pd metal by the addition of ascorbic acid into the simulated radwaste occurred at below 1 M nitric acid concentration and its yield showed maximum at the ascorbic acid concentration of 0.01~0.02 M. The hydrazine suppressed the reductive precipitation of Pd by the ascorbic acid.
Retinoic acid (RA), a metabolite of vitamin A, is known to regulate dedifferentiation of rabbit articular chondrocytes. The regulatory mechanism of dedifferentiation by RA is not yet understood. Thus, the effect of RA on the regulation of nitric oxide (NO)-induced dedifferentiation was investigated in rabbit articular chondrocytes. RA caused loss of the differentiated chondrocyte phenotype as demonstrated by inhibition of type II collagen expression and proteoglycan synthesis. RA also accelerated NO-induced dedifferentiation in rabbit articular chondrocytes as detected by expression of type II collagen and Sox-9 using Western blot analysis and production of sulfated proteoglycan using Alcain blue staining. Further, RA potentiated NO-induced activation of ERK. Inhibition of ERK with PD98059 (PD) recovered the expression of type II collagen and Sox-9 and production of sulfate proteoglycan in NO-induced dedifferentiated chondrocytes by RA treatment. Our findings suggest that RA accelerates NO-induced dedifferentiation of rabbit articular chondrocytes via the ERK pathway.
The metal-ligand complex, $[Ru(phen)_2(dppz)]^{2+}$ (phen=1,10-phenanthroline, dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine) (RuPD), was used as a spectroscopic probe for studying nucleic acid dynamics. The RuPD complex displays a long lifetime and a molecular light switch property upon DNA binding due to shielding of its dppz ligand from water. To show the usefulness of this luminophore (RuPD) for probing nucleic acid dynamics, we compared its intensity and anisotropy decays when intercalated into the $tRNA^{val}$ and pBluescript (pBS) II SK(+) phagemid through a comparison with ethidium bromide (EB), a conventional nucleic acid probe. We used frequency-domain fluorometry with a blue light-emitting diode (LED) as the modulated light source. The mean lifetime for the $tRNA^{val}$ (<${\tau}$> = 166.5 ns) was much shorter than that for the pBS II SK(+) phagemid (<${\tau}$> = 481.3 ns), suggesting a much more efficient shielding from water by the phagemid. Because of their size difference, the anisotropy decay data showed a much shorter rotational correlation times for the $tRNA^{val}$ (99.9 and 23.6 ns) than for the pBS II SK(+) phagemid (968.7 and 39.5 ns). These results indicate that RuPD can be useful for studying nucleic acid dynamics.
The palladium(II) complexes(where, [Pd(L)2X2], L=isoxazole(isox), 3,5-dimethylisoxazole(3,5-diMeisox), 3-methyl, 5-phenylisoxazole(3-Me, 5-Phisox), and 4-amino, 3,5-dimethylisoxazole(4-ADI); X=Cl, Br] with isoxazole and its derivatives are investigated on antitumor activity by EHMO calculation. It is found that the net charge of the two halogen atoms in trans-isomers are greater than those in cis-ones, indicating that ionic character of Pd-X bond in trans-isomers is greater than that of cis-ones, and so dissociation of Cl- ion is easier than that of Br- ion in aqueous solution in body. Furthermore, it is found that the ${\sigma}MO$ energy of Pd(dx2-y2)-X(px) bond $(E{\sigma}(Pd-X))$ is higher than that of Pd(dx2-y2)-N(px) bond $(E{\sigma}(Pd-N))$ without exception, about all the complexes, and also the $E{\sigma}(Pd-X)$ of trans-isomers is higher than that of cis-isomers. From the above facts, the degree of dissociation in Pd-X bond would be related to antitumor activity. In fact, the linear equation of correlation coefficient 0.96 is fairly established between ${\Delta}E{\sigma}(N-X)(E\sigma(Pd-N)-E{\sigma}(Pd-X))$ and inhibitory activity coefficient, logIA.
