  • Angiotensin II (Ang II), a key mediator of hypertensive, causes structural changes in the arteries (vascular remodeling), which involve alterations in cell growth, vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) hypertrophy. Ang II promotes fibrotic factor like IGFBP5, which mediates the profibrotic effects of Ang II in the heart and kidneys, lung and so on. The purpose of this study was to identify the signaling pathway of IGFBP5 on cell proliferation and migration of Ang II-stimulated VSMC. We have been interested in Ang II-induced IGFBP5 and were curious to determine whether a Pitavastatin would ameliorate the effects. Herein, we investigated the question of whether Ang II induced the levels of IGFBP5 protein followed by proliferation and migration in VSMC. Pretreatment with the specific Angiotensin receptor type 1 (AT1) inhibitor (Losartan), Angiotensin receptor type 2 (AT2) inhibitor (PD123319), MAPK inhibitor (U0126), ERK1/2 inhibitor (PD98059), P38 inhibitor (SB600125) and PI3K inhibitor (LY294002) resulted in significantly inhibited IGFBP5 production, proliferation, and migration in Ang II-stimulated VSMC. In addition, IGFBP5 knockdown resulted in modulation of Ang II induced proliferation and migration via IGFBP5 induction. In addition, Pitavastatin modulated Ang II induced proliferation and migration in VSMC. Taken together, our results indicated that Ang II induces IGFBP5 through AT1, ERK1/2, P38, and PI3K signaling pathways, which were inhibited by Pitavastatin. These findings may suggest that Pitavastatin has an effect on vascular disease including hypertension.

  • Partial discharges (PD) lead to the degradation of high voltage cables and accessories. PD activities occur due to the existence of impurities, voids, contaminants, defects and protrusions during the manufacture and installation of power cables. Commonly, insulation failures occur at cable joints and terminations, caused by inhomogeneous electric field distributions. In this work, a blend of natural rubber (NR) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) was investigated, and the optimal formulation of the blend that could resist PD was discussed. The experiments were conducted under a constant high voltage stress test of 6.5 kV AC and the magnitude of partial discharge activities was recorded using the CIGRE method II. Pattern analysis of PD signals was performed along with the interpretation of morphological changes. The results showed that the addition of 10 wt% of NR and 5 wt% of Alumina Trihydrate (ATH) provided promising results in resisting PD activities. However, as the NR content increased, more micropores existed, thus resulting in increased PD activities within the samples.

  • In order to overcome the lack of reactivity with hydrogen gas ($H_2$) and utilize unique properties of Carbon Nano Tubes (CNTs) for the application to hydrogen sensors, there have been intensive works on the surface functionalization of CNTs with various types of nanoparticles including Pd. In the present work, we have investigated the effect of dendrimers and Pd nanoparticles to the hydrogen sensing properties of CNTs by comparing three types of samples: Pd/SWNTs (Sample I), Pd/dendrimer/SWNTs (Sample II) and heat-treated Pd/dendrimers/SWNTs (Sample III). As a result of IV measurement under the $H_2$ and air, sample I was found to have a high sensitivity (25%) to $H_2$, but to have a very slow response time (324 s) and recovery rate. On the other hand, Sample II was found to show much faster response time (3 s) and good recovery rate but lower sensitivity (8.6%) than Sample I which is due to induced dipole moments in the dendrimers. Interestingly, Sample III showed both fast response time (7 s) and high sensitivity (25%), indicating that the pyrolysis of the dendrimers during heat treatment which reduce the distance between the surface of the SWNTs and the functionalized Pd nanoparticles plays a key role in improving the sensitivity. The pyrolysis of the dendrimers in Pd nanoparticle-dendrimer-SWNTs was found to enable a significant electrical conductance modulation upon exposure to extremely low concentrations (10 ppm) of $H_2$ in air. Our results demonstrate that the Pd Nanoparticle-Grafted Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes(SWNTs) with Dendrimers can be used to detect hydrogen, makingoutstanding properties such as fast response, and recovery time, high sensitivity, low detection limit at room temperature compared with other types of hydrogen sensors.

  • This paper describes a design of point scalar multiplier for public-key cryptography based on binary Edwards curves (BEdC). For efficient implementation of point addition (PA) and point doubling (PD) on BEdC, projective coordinate was adopted for finite field arithmetic, and computational performance was improved because only one inversion was involved in point scalar multiplication (PSM). By applying optimizations to hardware design, the storage and arithmetic steps for finite field arithmetic in PA and PD were reduced by approximately 40%. We designed two types of point scalar multipliers for BEdC, Type-I uses one 257-b×257-b binary multiplier and Type-II uses eight 32-b×32-b binary multipliers. Type-II design uses 65% less LUTs compared to Type-I, but it was evaluated that it took about 3.5 times the PSM computation time when operating with 240 MHz. Therefore, the BEdC crypto core of Type-I is suitable for applications requiring high-performance, and Type-II structure is suitable for applications with limited resources.

  • Simultaneous separation and analysis of Ni(II), Pd(II), Co(II), Cu(II) and Hg(II) in peperidinedithiocarbamate (PDTC) chelates were investigated by reversed phase liquid chromatography. The optimum conditions for the separation of PDTC metal chelates were examined with respect to the pH, extraction solvent, and mobile phase strength on Novapak $C_{18}$ column using methanol/water mixture as mobile phase. All metal PDTC chelates were eluted in an acceptable range of capacity factor value ($0{\leq}log\;k^{\prime}{\leq}1$). The linear calibration curves were obtained in the concentration range of $0{\sim}1.2{\mu}g/mL$ for five metal ions, and also good precision in the range of 1.96~3.41% RSD was obseved. Under the optimum conditions, trace metat ions in the composite water sample were successfully separated and determined with relative error of ${\pm}2.0%$.

  • Complexes of Pd(btnbmtp)$Cl_2$ and Pt(btnbmptp)$Cl_2$ (btnbmtp = 2,5-bis(thiophen)-1-nonyl-3,4-bis(methylthio)- pyrrole) were prepared and their crystal structures were determined at room temperature. In the structures, the two thiophene moieties lie in cis form with an average dihedral angle of $55.26^{\circ}$ to the pyrrole frame. The luminescence properties of the free ligand and the complexes were investigated in solution and solid states. The luminescence of the compounds were not favored by substituting thiophene moieties to the pyrrole frame, compared to the unsubstituted nbmptp (nbmptp = 1-nonyl-3,4-bis(methylthio)pyrrole). In particular, thiophene substitution quenched the emission from the complexes dissolved in ,$CH_2Cl_2$ and reduced the charge transfer transitions from S atoms of the thio moieties to Pt in crystalline state, which was very characteristic of Pt(nbmptp)$Cl_2$.

  • Pd/MWCNT/$TiO_2$ composites were synthesized by a sol-gel technique using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), palladium (II) chlorite ($PdCl_2$) and titanium tetrachloride ($TiCl_4$) as the carbon, palladium and titanium precursors. The Pd/MWCNT/$TiO_2$ composites prepared were characterized by BET surface area measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic activity of the composites was evaluated using the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV and visible light irradiation as a model.

  • Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods were grown on a palladium (Pd) activated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber where Pd activation was carried out in advance by the following dry process: palladium(II) bis(acetylacetonate), $Pd(acac)_2$ was sublimed, penetrated into the surface of PAN fiber and spontaneously reduced to Pd nanoparticles at $180^{\circ}C$ for various times under a nitrogen atmosphere. ZnO nanorod morphology was observed by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the elemental composition was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The crystalline structure of ZnO nanorods was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showing Wurtzite structure consisting of hexagonal lattice. Sulfur removal characteristics were evaluated.

  • The reaction of $(en)Pd(NO_3)_2$ (en = ethylenediamine) with 1,4-bis(dimethyl-4-pyridylsilyl)benzene (L) affords cyclodimer, $[(en)Pd(L)]_2(NO_3)_4$, whereas the reaction of $(tmeda)Pd(NO_3)_2$ (tmeda = N,N,N’,N’-tetramethylethylenediamine) with L gives cyclotrimer, $[(tmeda)Pd(L)]_3(NO_3)_6$. Both complexes exist as catenane in water. The catenated cyclodimer is rigid whereas the catenated cyclotrimer is dynamic in water. The catenated cyclotrimers afford hydrogel containing 98.5% water below 2 ${^{\circ}C}$. The hydrogel changes to its sol around 38 ${^{\circ}C}$, and to its clear solution at 78 ${^{\circ}C}$. Such a notable difference between $[(en)Pd(L)]_2(NO_3)_4$ and $[(tmeda)Pd(L)]_3(NO_3)_6$ might be explained by their different dynamic behavior via ring size effects.
