A Study on the PM2.5 Concentration in the Car in Jeonju Downtown (전주시 중심가를 주행중인 승용차내 초미세먼지(PM2.5) 농도 변화에 대한 연구)

  • The Korea Ministry of Environment prepares some paticulate matter eliminate measures for national health protection, as the Paticulate Matter ($PM_{2.5}$) exceeds the standard at more than half of the monitoring posts installed in the nation's big cities. At the center of JeonJu, when measuring the ultrafine particles of inner car at the different driving conditions, at the condition of the Actuator of inner recirculation mode and the Blower of 2-speed, the reduction speed of the ultrafine particles is most fast and the concentration stays low. When the windows are opened during driving, outer pollutants enter the car and also inner paticulate matter flies in all direction, and the increase of passengers causes the scattering of the ultrafine paticles. As the filter for air cleaning, the using of polypropylene non-woven fabric (used commonly now) is most excellent, but for the removal of volatile organic substance as well as the paticulate matter, it is thought that the using of activated carbon fiber filter, carbon adsorbent, is even more excellent.

Characteristics of Low Temperature Combustion in Single Cylinder Engine by High EGR Rate (단기통 엔진에서 대유량 EGR을 통한 저온 연소 특성)

  • Low temperature combustion regime for the simultaneous reduction of nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) and paticulate matter (PM) is demonstrated in single cylinder engine at various operating parameters, such as EGR rate, injection timing, EGR temperature, amount of fuel and swirl rate. Low temperature combustion is accomplished by high exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate in this study. Generally, the emission of $NO_x$ almost completely disappears and PM significantly increases in the first decreasing regime of oxygen concentration but after peaking about 10~12% oxygen concentration, PM then decreases regardless of fuel injection quantity. Low temperature combustion regime was extended by low EGR temperature, high injection pressure and low amount of fuel.

  • The demand for high-efficiency dust collectors is rapidly increasing to remove PM from exhaust gas emission facilities, such as thermal power plants, steel mills, and industrial cogeneration plants, as the Pmemission standards have been strengthened. In this study, the electrospray is adapted for existing electrosratic precipitator(EP) to remedy its shortcomings and to improve the performance. Electrospray has been mainly used for the purpose of generating very fine droplets, but fir the purpose of EP, the flow rate over 10 mL/min per nozzleis required, and a high flow rate condition of 65 to 200 times is required. The electrospray of high flow rate has a completely different spray shape from the low flow rate condition, and was visualized through various figures such as corona discharge photographs and shadow images.

Filtration Characteristics of Paticulate Matter at Bag Filters Coated with PTFE Membrane During Off-Line Pulsing (PTFE membrane이 코팅된 여과백의 off-line 탈진시 미세먼지 집진 특성)

  • Particulate matter becomes an important issue in the environmental society recently so that it is necessary to evaluate that the commercial application of baghouse systems for effective control of fine particulates is viable. A laboratory-scale baghouse experimental apparatus with filter bags made of PTFE felt or PTFE felt coated with PTFE membrane is used to investigate the filtration performances of fine particulates. Experiments by changing filtration velocity, inlet dust concentration, and average dust particle size show that the dust collection efficiency becomes higher at lower filtration velocity, higher inlet dust concentration and larger average dust particle size. The total pressure drop through the filter media and dust layer becomes higher at higher filtration velocity and higher inlet dust concentration. The dust collection efficiency is higher and the pressure drop is lower at a baghouse with filter bags coated with PTFE membrane than that without membrane coating. From the result that the dust collection efficiency of $PM_{2.5}$ in a reasonable filtration velocity range during off-line pulsing at a baghouse with PTFE felt bag filters coated with PTFE membrane is as high as 99.99%, it is confirmed that the use of baghouse is an effective measure to control the fine particulates.
