Fifty-two pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains were isolated from the environments of Busan and Yeosu, Korea. Forty-three of these strains showed protease activities, whereas 4 strains showed $\alpha / \beta$ hemolysin activities and 6 strains had urease activities. Their pathogenic factors were not overlapping except one strain, which had both protease and hemolysin activities. The 6 urease-positive strains (V. parahaemolyticus YKB4, YKB14, S25, YFB20, YFO21, and YFO22) showed the same biochemical characteristics as a reference strain [V. parahaemolyticus KCTC 2471 (urease-negative)], except for urease production. The 6 urease-positive strains showed different urease activities in their culture supernatant during the growth. The urease activity of S25 increased sharply at the late exponential phase, and was the highest at the initial stationary phase and was kept until the late stationary phase. The other 5 isolates, except C25, showed urease activities at the mid-stationary phase and increased steadily until the late stationary phase, when the urease activity was maximal. To compare the degree of virulence of V. parahaemolyticus with different pathogenic factors, hemolysin, protease, or urease-positive strains were injected into groups of 10 each of ICR mice (7- to l0-week-old males). The lethal rates of urease-positive V. parahaemolyticus, YKB14, YKB4, and S25, were significantly high, being 50, 70, and 80%, respectively. Protease-positive V. parahaemolyticus strains FM39 and FM50 showed 40% and 60% of lethal rate, respectively. Hemolysin-positive V. parahaemolyticus strains S34 and S72 had no mortality, similar to nonpathogenic V. parahaemolyticus FM12.

A total of 52 pathogenic Vibrio strains was isolated from the Gwangan Beach during summer in 2003. The isolated vibrios were composed of 6 different species: V. parahaemolyticus, V. cholerae non O1, V. fluvialis, V. vulnificus, V. alginolyticus, and V. mimicus. V. parahaemolyticus was most predominant as $46\%$ (24/52), V. cholerae non O1 was the second with $23\%$ (12/52), and V. fluvialis was the third with $17\%$ (9/52). Among the isolated strains, 22 strains showed hemolytic, proteolytic or ureolytic activity. Eight strains showed both hemolysin and protease activities, and either 6 strains showed only hemolysin activities and 7 strains only protease activities. Only one strain of V. parahaemolyticus isolates showed urease activity. The urease-positive V. parahaemolyticus strain (V. parahaemolyticus S25) showed the same biochemical characteristics as the reference strain, V. parahaemolyticus KCTC 2471 (ureasenegative) except for urease production. To compare the degree of virulence of Vibrio strains having different pathogenic factors, hemolysin, protease, or urease-positive strains were injected into groups of 10 each of ICR mice (7- to l0-week-old male). The lethal rate of urease-positive V. parahaemolyticus S25 was significantly high, being $70\%$. Protease-positive strains showed $40-60\%$ of lethal rate. Hemolysin-positive strains showed no mortality, similar to non-pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus KCTC 2471 and V. parahaemolyticus FM12.
The pathogenic Vibrio genus denotes halophilic bacteria that are distributed in aquatic environments, including both sea and freshwater. V. cholerae, V. vulnificus, and V. parahaemolyticus are the main species that can be potent human pathogens and the leading cause of septicemia, wound infections, and seafood borne gastroenteritis. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of pathogenic Vibrios in seawater. We obtained a total of 80 seawater samples from the Geum River estuary area in the west coast of Korea from April to December 2021. Pathogenic Vibrios was determined using a combination of the most probable number-polymerase chain reaction (MPN-PCR) methods. The detection levels of V. cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus, and V. vulnificus in the seawater samples were 7.5%, 68.8%, and 30.0%, respectively. The quantitative results were as follows: 3.6-3.6 MPN/100 mL in V. cholerae, 3.6-3,400 MPN/100 mL in V. parahaemolyticus, and 3.6-4,300 MPN/100 mL in V. vulnificus. Overall, these results provide novel insight into the necessity for seawater sanitation in the Geum River estuary area, and could help reduce the risk of seafood-borne outbreaks caused by pathogenic Vibrios.
The pathogenic Vibrio genus contains halophilic bacteria that are distributed in marine and freshwater environments. Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio vulnificus, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus are potent human pathogens and leading causes of septicemia, wound infection, and seafood-borne gastroenteritis. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of pathogenic Vibrio species in seawater off the west coast of Korea. Sixty-four seawater samples were obtained from different sites in Gomso Bay and Byeonsan from April 2018 to November 2018. Pathogenic Vibrio species were detected using a combination of most probable number (MPN)-polymerase chain reaction methods. V. cholerae, V. vulnificus, and V. parahaemolyticus were found in 0.0%, 20.3%, and 65.6% of seawater samples, respectively. Quantitative results revealed 3.6-23 MPN/100 mL of V. vulnificus, and 3.6-930 MPN/100 mL of V. parahaemolyticus in the samples. Overall, these results provide new insight into the necessity for seawater sanitation in Gomso Bay and Byunsan; they also provide evidence that will help reduce outbreaks of seafood-borne illness caused by pathogenic Vibrio species.
Fifty four strains of pathogenic vibrios were isolated from the Gwangan Beach from May to October, 2002. The isolated vibrios were composed of 7 different species: Vibrio parahaemolyticus, V. cholerae non-O1, V. alginolyticus, V. vulnificus, V. hollisae, V. fluvialis, ane V. mimicus. In the detection rate, V. parahaemolyticus was most predominant as $46\%$(25/54). From the isolated strains, only 25 strains have hemolytic activity or 25 strains only proteolytic activity on agar plates. Eleven strains showed both hemolytic and proteolytic activity. No strains showed urease activity. All strains of V parahaemolyticus did not show hemolytic activity, while V. cholerae non-O1 strains showed $\beta$ hemolytic activity. Kanagawa phenomena of pathogenic vibrios did not accord with hemolytic activity of the culture supernatant at the late log phase. Some strains showed high hemolytic activity despite having proteolytic activity, but some weak hemolytic activities despite having no proteolytic activity.
This study was carried out to determine the inhibitory effect of garlic juice against Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri. Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Virio. parahaemolyticus which are food pathogenic bacteria and Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactococcus. lactis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides which are lactic acid bacteria. An aqueous extract of garlic was bacteriocidal against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in all concentrations (0.1∼2.5(w/v)%) tested in this experiment. Especially 0.5(w/v)% garlic juice inactivated completely E. coli, S. typhimurium, S. flexineri, V. parahaemolyticus and 1.0(w/v)% garlic juice perfectly reduced P. aeruginosa, S. mutans. Generally, the experiment result indicate that garlic juice restrains the growth of the pathogenic bacteria better than the lactic acid bacteria. Therefore, garlic has potential for the preservation of processed foods.
This study was focused on the isolation of pathogenic Vibrio species, V. vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus from marine environment from May to July of 1999. Isolation sites were coast near by Pusan and Daechon. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Seventy strains of V. parahaemolyticus and 19 strains of V. vulnificus were isolated from a total of 120 specimens. 2. Nineteen strains of V. vulnificus did not fermented arabinose and salicin but fermented lactose and cellobiose. All of V. parahaemolyticus isolates did not fermented lactose and cellobiose. 47 strains of V. parahaemolyticus fermented arabinose but 53 strains did not fermented salicin. 3. V. vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus isolates showed three different API index numbers with 5046105 and 4346107 dominant. 4. V. vulnificus did not grow on 0% and 8% NaCl containing medium. V. parahaemolyticus grew on 8% NaCl containing medium. 5. V. vulnificus isolates and V. parahaemolyticus revealed different outer membrane protein profiles on SDS-PAGE.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, turbidity and pH on the growth of pathogenic Vibrios. In this study, we was obtained the samples from 2 different sites of the Incheon coastal area between January 2012 and December 2012. The water temperature in August and September was the high. the Incheon port changes the width of a small, wherease in the case of Hanjin harbor of changes of larger width. Salinity and turbidity showed significant differences, whereas temperature and hydrogen ion concentration was not significant. Pathogenic vibrios was determined using the real-time PCR method. Pathogenic vibrios in the Incheon port and Hanjin harbor were detected in 11 samples (91.67%) and 9 samples (75.0%) of Vibrio cholerae, 7 samples (58.3%) and 6 samples (50.0%) of V. vulnificus, 10 samples (83.3%) and 12 samples (100.0%) of V. parahaemolyticus, respectively. Pathogenic Vibrio bacteria were the highest at $26.8^{\circ}C$ of seawater in August. Quantitative results were the following: 102 $cell/m{\ell}$ in Vibrio cholerae, 7.876 $cell/m{\ell}$ in V. vulnificus, and 503.4 $cell/m{\ell}$ in V. parahaemolyticus, respectively. The enumeration of pathogenic vibrios showed a positive correlation with temperature and pH, but was negatively correlated with salinity and turbidity.
