Rapid detection of foodbome pathogens is becoming increasingly important. The requirement for faster, more reliable tests has lead to the development of a wide range of rapid methods. Among these methods, the use of systems based on nucleic acid based detection has been increasing since they offer advantages of reduction in test time and more reliable detection or identification. Random Amplification Polymorphic DNA(RAPD) method has been used to fingerprint foodbome microorganisms; Listeria monocytogenes. In this study, 10-mer primer OPG-13(5'-CTCTCCGCCA-3') was used to generate RAPD-PCR for detection of pathogenic L. monocytogenes of Listeria spp. Among 20 primers tested, OPG-13 showed on acceptable result for the differentiation of a pathogenic Listeria from non-pathogenic microorganisms. Pathogenic Listeria, L. monocytogenes(ATCC 15313, 19111, 19112, 19113) showed two bands for 700 bp and 1,500 bp while non-pathogenic bacteria, L. ivanovii, L. grayi, L. murrayi, L. innocua, L. welshimeri, and L. seeligeri had only one band sizing from 2,000 to 2,300 bp. This RAPD method proved to be a valuable to gain important information on sources of pathogenic bacteria in food industry.

The present study addressed the efficacy of nanosized silica-silver for controlling plant pathogenic microorganisms. The nanosized silica-silver consisted of nano-silver combined with silica molecules and water soluble polymer, prepared by exposing a solution including silver salt, silicate and water soluble polymer to radioactive rays. The nanosized silica-silver showed antifungal activity against the tested phytopathogenic fungi at 3.0 ppm with varied degrees. In contrast, a number of beneficial bacteria or plant pathogenic bacteria were not significantly affected at 10 ppm level but completely inhibited by 100 ppm of nanosized silicasilver. Among the tested plant pathogenic fungi, the new product effectively controlled powdery mildews of pumpkin at 0.3 ppm in both field and greenhouse tests. The pathogens disappeared from the infected leaves 3 days after spray and the plants remained healthy thereafter. Our results suggested that the product developed in this study was effective in controlling various plant fungal diseases.
Bacillus polyfermenticus SCD which is commonly called as Bisroot (equation omitted) has been appropriately used for the treatment of long-term intestinal disorder's. This strain strongly inhibited against methicillin resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and various pathogenic microorganisms. Effects of B. polyfermentius SCD administration on death rates and egg-laying rates in two groups of hens were investigated. This strain decreased the death rates of two groups by 16.26% and 11.72%, respectively. Also this strain increased the egg-laying rates of those 2.74% and 2.66%, respectively Clinical tests of B. polyfermenticus SCD administration to healthy adults showed not adverse effects but decreased glyceride concentration from 154.52 mg/dl to 135.41 mg/dl after two week administrations.

Contemporary biological control system includes the use of fungi to control weeds in agricultural ecosystems and forests. Fungal pathogens of weeds that are highly virulent and specific to target weeds, and able to be produced massively by artificial culture could be applied like chemical herbicides over the weeds.(중략)
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of hot spring water against the survival of food-borne and pathogenic microorganisms. Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Escherichia coli, which are food-borne microorganisms, Candida albicans and Trichophyton mentagrophytes, which are skin disease pathogens, and Helicobacter pylori, gastritis inducing microorganism, were tested. The content of fluoride in tested hot spring water is 14.1 mg/L, which is higher than the standard of safe for drinking water 1.5 mg/L, but the results on 48 other items were up to the standard. Hot spring water didn't show the bactericidal effects against food-borne microorganisms, C. albicans, and H. pylori tested. However, the viable cell populations of B. cereus and T. mentagrophytes were decreased, which were depends on the temperature of hot spring water. From these results, we confirmed that hot spring water didn't show the bactericidal effects against food-borne microorganisms, skin disease pathogens, and gastritis inducing microorganism, but the growth of some microorganisms were inhibited by high temperature ($41^{\circ}C$).

Recently, biological weapons (BWs) prepared with pathogenic microorganisms, toxins and biological vectors have been used maliciously for biological warfare, bioterrorism and/or agroterrorism by hostile countries and terrorists. In this review, historical background of disease and malicious use of BWs pathogenicity of microorganisms, advanced methodology involved in laboratory diagnosis, and prevention and control of anthrax (Bacillus anthracis), plague (Yersinia pseudotuberculosis subs. pestis), glanders (Burkholderia mallei), and smallpox (Variola virus) which have been abused for biological warfare or bioterrorism were discussed. In addition, the pathogenicity of microorganisms and the methodology needed to diagnose and control 6 diseases identified by WHO/CDC, ie., smallpox, inhalation anthrax, pneumonic plague, botulism, tularemia, and hemorrhagic fevers that would wreak havoc if terrorists successfully disseminated the germs by air were described.
Pathogenic microorganisms were monitored on the chicken carcasses in slaughterhouse of Jeonbuk area. It was conducted to evaluate the microbiological quality on 204 chicken carcasses. Staphylococcus (S.) aureus was isolated in largest number and its ration was 41.2%, Salmonella spp. 6.4%, Campylobacter (C.)jejuni 7.4%, C. coli 7.4%. Serotype of Salmonella (S.) spp. was identified as S. Infantis 46.1%, S. Enteritidis 23.1%, S. Typhimurium 7.7%, S. Montevideo 7.7%. In breed chickens, Salmonella spp. was detected broiler 4.1%, white semi-broiler 8.0% Korean native chicken 12.0%. C. jejuni was isolated broiler 7.4%, white semi-broiler 12.0%, Korean native chicken 0%, C. coli, broiler 7.4%, white semi-broiler 0%, Korean native chicken 18.1% and S. aureus, broiler 38.8%, white semi-broiler 40.0%, Korean native chicken 51.5%.
The aim of this study was to investigate the possible utilization of Zanthoxylum schinifolium as a source of antimicrobial agents. The antimicrobial effects of Zanthoxylum schinifolium extracts were investigated against Acinetobacter baumannii, which is a multi-drug resistant pathogen, and 5 other pathogenic microorganisms. The hexane extract of Zanthoxylum schinifolium was more effective than the ethyl acetate, n-butanol and methanol extracts which were active against Acinetobacter baumannii 25, with minimum inhibitory concentrations(MIC) ranging from 0.8 mg/ml to 1.6 mg/ml. Tetracycline had no effect on Acinetobacter baumanniii. The hexane extract was highly active against Candida albicans IFO 6258, with an MIC of 1.5 mg/ml. In contrast, the ethyl acetate, n-butanol and methanol extracts showed no activity against the 5 pathogenic microorganisms. Furthermore, a combination of hexane extract and ethyl acetate extract was significantly more active against the 5 Acinetobacter baumannii strains than n-butanol and methanol. These results suggest that Zanthoxylum schinifolium extracts have great potential as antimicrobial compounds against multi-drug resistant pathogens, and further studies are warranted.
Strain SA72 was isolated from Jeot-gal and identified as producer of a bacteriocin, which showed some bactericidal activity against Lactobacillus delbrueckii ATCC 4797. Strain SA72 was tentatively identified as Lactococcus lactis according to the AOI test. Lactococcus lactis SA72 showed a broad spectrum of microorganisms, tested by the modified deferred method. The activity of lacticion SA72, named tentatively as a bacteriocin produced by Lactococcus lactis SA72, was detected during the mid-lon growth phase, reached a maximum during the early stationary phase, and then declined after the late stationary phase. Lacticin SA72 also showed a relatively broad spectrum of activity against non-pathogenic and pathogenic microorganisms when assessed by the spot-on-lawn method. Its anitimicrobial activity on sensitive indicator cells disappeared completely by protease XIV treatment. The inhibitory activity of lacticin SA72 remained after treatment for 15 min at $121^{\circ}C$, 문 was stable in a pH range of 2.0 to 9.0 and all organic solvents examined. It demonstrated a typical bactericidal mode of inhibition against Lactobacillus delbrueckii ATCC 4797. The apparent molecular mass of lacticin SA72 was in the region of 3-3.5 kDa, determined by SDS-PAGE.
