  • Patents are an up-to-date and reliable source of technological knowledge, and thus patent analysis has been considered to be a necessary step for identifying evolving technological trends and planning technology strategies. Although there exist many research papers and technical reports concerning patent analysis, few empirical studies on planning technology strategies for uncertain futures from a national or company perspective have been rarely conducted. Therefore, this paper aims presenting a procedure and its practical case of planning future technology strategies by incorporating patent analysis and scenario planning. Using patents related to polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells, this paper developed technology strategies corresponding to future scenarios. We expect that the proposed method and case study can assist knowledge services of experts in the long-term technology strategy planning process.

  • This study analyzes current technologies in personal protective equipment (PPE) and mechanisms that can be used in the agricultural field to provide data for research and development on PPE for farmers. There is growing awareness of the importance of PPE as part of efforts to reduce agricultural accidents, but data remain rare for developing PPE tailored to the farm work environment. In this regard, patent data on PPE can provide useful insights for facilitating relevant technologies and research. This study examines patents and utility models classified under the IPC code in Korea and other countries to analyze patented technologies and recent trends for the period from January 2003 to October 2014. Here Korea, the U.S., Japan, and Europe were considered. The results show that the number of patent applications for PPE remained steady without any sharp fluctuations. KIPO applications accounted for 43.5% of all cases, reflecting the highest proportion among the countries considered. Domestic applicants accounted for 94% of all cases. In Korea, patent applications were concentrated in safety gear for the face and eyes, indicating a high level of technology. The highest level of competition was observed for safety goggles in all countries. Some PPE technologies were dominated by a particular manufacturer. The analysis results for farming-related technologies show the current state of technologies and areas lacking technological development. This study analyzes patented technologies for PPE in Korea and other countries and recent research trends as part of the effort to develop PPE for workers in the farming and livestock industry. This study represents an early-stage effort to develop PPE for workers in the farming and livestock industry, and the results are expected to be useful for tailoring PPE to Korea's farming and livestock environment.

  • This study divided hairpiece-related technologies into three categories: Materials, Structure, Hair Extensions. Then, it investigated the current patent application trends in the above technologies and attempted to determine what aspects should be focused on in terms of the growth potential of hairpiece-related technologies and future technologies. A hairpiece is used to cover a specific balding area resulting from innate factors such as heredity or acquired traits including disease or accident. It is also used to make short hair look longer. Recently, as the rates of hair loss caused by stress increase, there has been a rising demand for hairpieces that can quickly and conveniently cover a balding region as well as satisfy people's aesthetic needs through diverse hairstyling. Even though patents have been applied evenly across hairpiece technology fields, patent activity has declined since 2010 was confirmed. Therefore, this study targets the facilitation and expansion of the hairpiece technology market by suggesting desirable R&D directions for future hairpiece-related technologies after analyzing current hairpiece patent trends.

  • Patent indicators were used to analyze the movements of local industries in order to derive blank technologies due to rapid changes in technology in the 4th Industrial Revolution and to discover promising technologies. Currently, Changwon-si is gathering a lot of technical information to develop hydrogen electric vehicle technology as a future regional flagship industry to discover it as a promising technology in the future. Collecting technical information has many problems in terms of time and cost due to classification methods, technical trends, and similar technologies. Therefore, a systematic classification of technical information and a method for easily deriving technical trends are needed. In this paper, we analyzed the blank technology and promising technology trends for the future core industries of the region through the method of measuring the growth rate of patents and the frequency of patent application through the patent indicators.

  • The impact of technological advancements on employment is a matter of ongoing debate, with discussions on the effects of AI technology development on employment being particularly scarce. This study employs the natural language processing technique (SBERT) and patents to calculate an occupation-based AI exposure score and to analyze employment trends by group. It proposes a method for calculating the AI exposure score based on the similarity between Korean patent information and US job descriptions and linking SOC(U.S.) and KSCO(Korea). The analysis of domestic AI patent applications and regional employment data in the KOSIS Database since 2013 reveals a K-shaped polarization pattern in Korean employment trends among groups with above and below average levels of AI exposure.

  • Given the continued climate change and global warming, various technologies for greenhouse gas reduction were discussed worldwide as all 195 countries participated in the Paris Agreement on the reduction of greenhouse gases. The agreement was adopted at the 21st Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC (COP21), which was held in Paris, France, in December 2015, and it revealed that reducing CO2 is the most efficient method of greenhouse gas reduction. Accordingly, carbon capture/utilization/storage (CCUS) technology has been noted as a means of making practical contributions to CO2 reduction, and research and development (R&D) activities in many countries are active in the field of CCUS technology. Therefore, this study aims to provide a basis for CCUS R&D and strategic support measures by analyzing patent trends in technologies related to CCUS. The patent analysis collected a total of 10,137 patents in the United States, Korea, Japan, Europe, and China; the number of patents in the United States was the highest according to patent analysis by country. According to an analysis by technology, capture-related technology was high at 60%, but given the recent increase in technology related to utilization, technology demonstration, R&D, and policy support should be continued.
