  • Radiation characteristics of $5{\times}4$ pin array patch antennas are compared to those of $5{\times}2$ pin array patch antennas for several substrate thicknesses using the computer simulation. Since the number of unit cells of a $5{\times}2$ pin array patch antenna is half of that of a $5{\times}4$ pin array patch antenna, the number of pins used in a $5{\times}2$ pin array patch antenna is half of that in a $5{\times}4$ pin array patch antenna and the patch width of a $5{\times}2$ pin array patch antenna is very small compared to that of a $5{\times}4$ pin array patch antenna. However, the radiation characteristics of a $5{\times}2$ pin array patch antenna are almost similar to those of a $5{\times}4$ pin array patch antenna.

Mur's 2nd absorbing boundary condition to minimize reflected wave is applied. Return loss, voltage standing wave ratio, and input impedance by the length and width of driving patch, the length and width of parasitic patch, and the distance between driving patch and parasitic patch have been analyzed. Design parameters and radiation patterns of broadband antenna have been also shown.

  • The bandwidth enhancement of an aperture coupled microstrip patch antenna(ACMPA) with a high permittivity feed substrate suitable for the integration with MMIC is investigated using variation of an aperture width. As an aperture width increases, the 10 dB return loss bandwidth increases due to the increase of the mutual resonance region between a patch resonance and an aperture resonance. The bandwidth of an ACMPA with extended aperture width is increased up to 35.3 % from 20.8 % of the ACMPA with an aperture of a typical aspect ratio 10:1. The degradation of the radiation characteristics of an ACMPA due to the increase of an aperture width is very small.

  • In this paper, we studied an antenna that forms a wide beam width by applying a horn-shaped reflector to a patch array antenna. To implement a wide beam width, three patches were arranged in each of the four directions on a square microstrip substrate, and a horn-shaped reflector was applied to the rear of the array antenna. Through this structure, the vertical beam pattern formed from the patch was converted to a diagonal direction, and as a result, the beam widths formed in each of the four sectors were added to create a wide beam width close to a hemisphere. The proposed antenna was studied for application to UAV(unmanned aerial vehicle), and the simulation test results confirmed that the 4.5 dBi beam width was 146.8°.

  • P-wave characteristic in the human electrocardiogram (ECG) is important in the diagnosis of atrial conduction pathology. In this paper, we measured an ECG signal from patient with cardiovascular disease using one lead ECG electrode system which is based on the wireless cardiac monitoring system. And we detected a P-wave in ECG signal using the complex-valued continuous wavelet transforms (CWT) according to two kinds of patch type electrodes such as an existing narrow patch type electrode and the improved wide patch type electrode presented in this paper. Also, we compared the characteristics in detecting the P-wave in terms of the magnitude and the width of P-waves. From the results of comparison we found that the width and the magnitude of P-wave detected using the wide patch type electrode is improved to be interpreted easier compared to those using the narrow patch type electrode. Furthermore, we have also proven that the complex-valued CWT can be used as a robust detector for P-wave in ECG signal analysis.

  • We designed and fabricated partially shorted QMSAs(Quarter-Wavelength Microstrip Antennas) for 850[MHz]band on various Copper-clad Laminates substrates (TACONIC company), where the width of the radiation patch is identical with that of the ground plane and the radiation patch is partially shorted to the ground plane. The resonant frequencies and the return losses according to the electrical thickness were measured by reducing the PSW (Partially Shorted Width) to 0[mm]. As a result, a good characterized antenna with an average 11% reduced resonant length and a return loss -15.86~-30.68[㏈] was obtained when the total PSW was in the range of 70% of radiated patch width, compared to the conventional QMSA.

The resonant frequency, return loss and input impedance due to the permittivity(2.5, 3.5, 10.0) and thickness(0.76~1.57 mm, 6 types) were measured by reducing the PSW (Partially Shorted Width) to 0 mm. As a result, good characterized antennas with average 11% reduced resonant length and return loss 7.288~29.445 dB were obtained when the total PSW was in the range of 70% of radiated patch width, compared to the conventional λ/4 MSA.

  • In order to improve the radiation characteristics of the microstrip antenna, microstrip array antenna consisting of one center patch fed by a coaxial probe and several patches directly coupled to the E-plane by microstrip line is analyzed. The equivalent circuit of the array antenna is represented by the conventional transmission line and the various parameters, such as the mdicrostrip line length, the patch length and the feed point location are calculated to improve the radiation pattern for 5-patch array antenna which has the equal patch width. The 5-patch array antenna with the radiation pattern which has low sidelobe level and narrow beam width is fabricated and then the measured results are compared with the computed values and the results of the single patch microstrip antenna too.

  • The inductive loaded patch antenna with suppressed radiation along the horizontal plane and enhanced broadside gain is investigated by adjusting the width and the via radius of a unit cell at a fixed length of a unit cell. The effects of the via radius and the width of the unit cell on the dispersion characteristics of the inductive loaded transmission line are investigated. The systematic study to determine the via radius and the width of the unit cell for the effective dielectric constant of the inductive loaded patch antenna close to 1 in order to suppress the radiation along the horizontal plane is presented. Inductive loaded patch antennas composed of five unit cells with resonant frequency of 5 GHz are designed and their radiation characteristics are presented. The horizontal radiation along the E-plane is greatly suppressed to less than -15 dBi when the effective dielectric constant of the inductive loaded patch antenna is slightly less than 1.

  • In this paper, we present the design and fabrication of a new circularly polarized circular patch antenna. The antenna is realized using a plastic foam sheet, a Teflon substrate and a metal-coated film. The radiating element is a circular patch proximity-fed by a wide microstrip line. Two thins slots are introduced on the circular patch to obtain a circular polarized radiation. The antenna is optimized using a commercial software. The antenna has 18% impedance bandwidth, 4% axial-ratio band width and 9.12dBi gain.
