  • In this paper, we discuss hardware design and deployment issues in current passive UHF RFID systems. Using the link budget concept, the methodology to calculate forward- and reverse-link interrogation range is shown. Then, we consider hardware issues: phase diversity, phase noise with range correlation, and TX leakage problems. Finally, three interference problems when deploying RFID systems are presented.

  • Radio frequency identification (RFID) tags are cheap and simple devices that can store unique identification information and perform simple computation to keep better inventory of packages. Security protocol for RFID tags is needed to ensure privacy and authentication between each tag and their reader. In order to accomplish this, in this paper, we analyzed a lightweight privacy and authentication protocol for passive RFID tags.

  • A Dual-Path Voltage Multiplier for passive RFID Tags was proposed and fabricated by using a 0.25um CMOS process with additional steps for schottky diodes. The proposed circuit needs only 4 additional diodes, and the area increment compared to conventional one is negligible in multi-stage voltage multipliers. The simulation and measurement results show that the output power capability of proposed multiplier are about two times larger than the conventional half-wave multiplier.

  • This paper presents a novel multiple orthogonal subcarrier modulation based UHF band RFID communication system. In tag-to-reader communication, the demonstration system can deliver 1.6 Mbps through four subcarriers. To improve data rate while suppressing increase in circuit complexity, tag employs square-waves as the subcarriers and uses individual load modulators for each subcarrier. By using multiple orthogonal subcarrier based modulation, proposed communication system can be operated under existing UHF band RFID regulation. In reader, an OFDM demodulator is used. Since the tag backscatters the reader's CW carrier, carrier frequency offset compensation is not necessary in reader demodulator. Experimental results show that the demonstration system achieves a bit error rate of 10-5 at an Eb/N0 of 10.8 dB.

  • This paper proposed hardware architecture of the block cryptographic algorithm HIGHT aiming small size and low power application, and analyzed its performance. The HIGHT is a modified algorithm of the Feistel. The encryption and decryption circuit were designed as one iterative block. It reduces the redundant circuit that yields small area. For the performance improvement, the circuit generates 32-bit subkey during 1 clock cycle. we synthesized the HIGHT with Hynix $0.25-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The proposed circuit size was 2.658 EG(equivalent gate), and its power consumption was $10.88{\mu}W$ at 2.5V for 100kHz. It is useful for a passive RFID tag or a smart IC card of a small size and low power.

  • This paper presents a design of the control block of a passive UHF RFID tag IC according to EPCglobal Class-1 Generation-2 UHF RFID 1.1.0 Protocol. The control block includes a PIE block, CRC5/CRC16, a Slot Counter, a Random Number Generator, a Main Control Block, a Encoder and a Memory Interface. The control block has been designed using the Verilog HDL and has been simulated. Functional simulation results for the overall control block operation show that 11 instructions with 7 states are operated correctly. Also, the control block has been implemented with 36,230 gates by Synopsys Design Compiler and Apollo using Magnachip 0.25$\mu$m technology.

  • ERP is an integrated information system to manage all human and material resources in offices. Therefore, the business competitiveness is reinforced. The best requirement of ERP is the real time data collection and analysis in ubiquitous environment. Passive information collection is a problem in existing ERP system. To solve that problem, active system is proposed using RFID Tag and Reader. From the simulation results, we confirm that resource information is acquired and event message is occurred after fixed time. In this paper, the real time management system of industry resource with RFID collects resource information actively instead of passive information collection and supports the event according to the schedule.

  • This paper suggests that location tracking system by RFID. It uses the location tracking and the authentication to entrance after inserts passive RFID tag into user Identification card. The readers periodically broadcast their signal, and then the readers understand where users are by analyzing them. In one of tracking systems, it is possible to detect the area where user had stayed for the longest time during moving according to signal power, to know user moved path and user next moving path. Also, it can be used in entrance authentication system in security area by using tag ID value which stored to backend server.

  • An active radio frequency identification (RFID) system has the advantages of a long identification distance and a good identification rate, overcoming passive RFID drawbacks. Therefore, interest in the development of active RFID systems has been gradually increasing in areas of harbor logistics and national defense. However, some identification failures between active RFID systems developed under the same standards have been reported, presumably due to a lack of development of accurate evaluation methods and test equipment. We present a realization of the hardware and software of an emulator to evaluate the standard conformance of an active RFID system in a fully anechoic chamber. The performance levels of the designed emulator are analyzed using Matlab/Simulink simulations, and the applicability of the emulator is verified by evaluating the standard conformance of a real active RFID tag. Finally, we propose a new evaluation method by incorporating a self-running test mode environment into the RFID tags to reduce testing time and increase testing accuracy. The application of the suggested method to actual tags improves measurement uncertainty by 0.56 dB over that obtained using existing methods.

  • In the passive UHF (860-960MHz) RFID communications, which consists of a set of readers and tags, the readers normally interrogate the tag by using the backscatter mechanism. (i.e., tag response). In practical RFID environment, where multiple readers or tags exist; the interference causes collisions. This paper proposes a centralized arbitration scheme for avoiding the collision problems among multiple readers. The proposed centralized arbitration scheme is modeled in software environments, and is verified with simulation results. Simulated performance is focused on completion time, utilization and response time, and the simulation results show that our proposed scheme provides satisfactory performance grade.
