This paper introduces a new self-bearing motor which combines a homopolar step motor and a passive magnetic bearing. Compared with conventional self-bearing motors which are mostly based on the theory of active magnetic bearings and therefore have some difficulties in design of the complicated flux distribution and control of the levitation force and the torque independently, the proposed self-bearing motor has a very simple and novel structure and operating principle. for the levitation, it works just like passive magnetic bearings which use the repulsive force between permanent magnets. On the other hand, its rotation principle is quite similar to that of a conventional homopolar step motor. In this paper, we introduce the basic structure and the operating principle in detail, and show some results of FEM analysis to predict the performance of the proposed self-bearing motor and further, to get the optimal design parameters.

Jitter induced from several payloads on-board satellites degrade the performance of pointing accuracy and attenuate the resolving power of highly-precise camera image such as KOMPSAT II. In this paper, we introduce a micro-vibration measurement technique, analysis of dynamic characteristics, and modeling method for a reaction wheel assembly which is one of the major sources of jitter in satellites and an effective vibration reduction techniques are considered. Based on these techniques, vibration measurement and passive control were performed with an micro-vibration generator which was designed to have similar dynamic performances with an actual reaction wheel assembly above 50Hz.

A study on the control of free vibration and stability characteristics of rotating hollow circular shafts subjected to compressive axial forces is presented in this paper. Both passive structural tailoring technique and active control scheme via collocated piezoelectric sensing and actuation are used in the study Gyroscopic and centrifugal forces combined with the compressive axial force contribute to the occurrence of divergence and flutter instabilities of the rotating shaft. The dual methodology based on the passive and active control schemes shows a high degree of efficiency toward postponement of these instabilities and expansion of the domain of stability of the system. The structural model of the shaft is based on an advanced thin-walled beam structure that includes the non-classical effects of transverse shear, anisotropy of constituent materials and rotatory inertia.

Rain-wind induced cable vibration can cause serious problems in cable-stayed bridge. External dampers attached to the cables have become widely accepted as an effective means for stay-cable vibration suppression. For very long stay-cables, however, such damper systems are rendered ineffective, as the dampers need be attached near the end of cables for aesthetic reasons. A recent study by the authors proposed that a movable anchorage system is replaced direct fixed support of the cable with a support through a bearing and damper. This paper extends the previous work by adding active control system to mitigate the cable vibration. The response of a cable with the proposed active control system is obtained and then compared to those of the cable with and without an external passive damper. The results show that the active control system can provide superior protection than the passive control system for a cable vibration.

Modern aircraft are required to carry various external stores mounted at different locations on the wing. Sometimes the attachment of stores to an aircraft wing leads to flutter speed reduction, which is a very severe aeroelastic problem. In order to suppress structural vibration and expand the flutter boundary of the aircraft with stores, it is necessary to investigate the main problems and characteristics of them. In addition, active vibration control may be required because passive vibration isolators show limited capabilities for the various wing/store configuration. In this paper, therefore, the flutter stability to the various wing/store configurations was investigated and active vibration control of wing/store model was performed using a piezoelectric actuator.

Passive control may not provide enough damping for a stay cable since the control devices are often restricted to a low location level. In order to enhance control performance of conventional passive dampers, a new type of damper integrated with a rotary electromagnetic damper providing variable damping force and a flywheel serving as an inertial mass, called the rotary electromagnetic inertial mass damper (REIMD), is presented for suppressing the cable vibrations in this paper. The mechanical model of the REIMD is theoretically derived according to generation mechanisms of the damping force and the inertial force, and further validated by performance tests. General dynamic characteristics of an idealized taut cable with a REIMD installed close to the cable end are theoretically investigated, and parametric analysis are then conducted to investigate the effects of inertial mass and damping coefficient on vibration control performance. Finally, vibration control tests on a scaled cable model with a REIMD are performed to further verify mitigation performance through the first two modal additional damping ratios of the cable. Both the theoretical and experimental results show that control performance of the cable with the REIMD are much better than those of conventional passive viscous dampers, which mainly attributes to the increment of the damper displacement due to the inertial mass induced negative stiffness effects of the REIMD. Moreover, it is concluded that both inertial mass and damping coefficient of an optimum REIMD will decrease with the increase of the mode order of the cable, and oversize inertial mass may lead to negative effect on the control performance.

Impact damper is a passive damping system that controls undesirable vibration with mass block impacting with stops fixed to the excited structure, introducing momentum exchange and energy dissipation. However, harmful momentum exchange may occur in the random excitation increasing structural response. Based on the mechanism of impact damping system, a semi-active impact damper (SAID) with controllable impact timing as well as a semi-active control strategy is proposed to enhance the seismic performance of engineering structures in this paper. Comparative experimental studies were conducted to investigate the damping performances of the passive impact damper and SAID. The extreme working conditions for SAID were also discussed and approaches to enhance the damping effect under high-intensity excitations were proposed. A numerical simulation model of SAID attached to a frame structure was established to further explore the damping mechanism. The experimental and numerical results show that the SAID has better control effect than the traditional passive impact damper and can effectively broaden the damping frequency band. The parametric studies illustrate the mass ratio and impact damping ratio of SAID can significantly influence the vibration control effect by affecting the impact force.

This paper presents an active vibration control of a flexible beam structure using a hybrid mount which consists of elastic rubber and Piezoelectric material. After identifying stiffness and damping properties of the rubber and piezoelectric elements, a mechanical model of the hybrid mount is established. The mount model is then Incorporated into the beam structure, and the governing equation of motion is obtained in a state space. A sliding mode controller is designed in order to actively attenuate the vibration of the beam structure subjected to high frequency and small magnitude excitations. The controller is experimentally realized and control responses such as acceleration of the beam structure and force transmission through the hybrid mount are evaluated. In addition. a comparative work is done between the passive and hybrid mount systems.

An active control of the lateral vibration of a translating tensioned Euler-Bemoulli beam is investigated. The dynamics of the translating tensioned beam is represented by a non-linear hyperbolic partial differential equation. A right boundary control law based upon the Lyapunov's second method is derived. The transverse motion of the translating tensioned beam is controlled by a time-varying external force besides a passive damping applied at the right boundary. Exponential stability of the closed loop system is proved. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.
