Research for the Chemical Emergency Oxygen Supply and Lighting System for Aircraft Passengers (항공기 승객용 화학적 비상산소 공급 및 조명시스템에 대한 연구)

  • A PSU (passenger service unit) is mounted on passenger seats in a cabin on an aircraft and consists of a crew call lamp, a reading lights, an information display lamp, an emergency oxygen generator, and an emergency oxygen mask. It is a safety device for providing convenience to passengers and providing oxygen to passengers in an emergency. This paper is a study on emergency oxygen supply systems and light systems of aircraft PSUs and a control device was developed to operate the system by analyzing the B767-300 aircraft's PSU circuit diagram. And the temperature generated by the B777-200ER aircraft's emergency oxygen generator was also measured by operating it directly. Through this, precautions for explaining the operation of an oxygen mask in an emergency were described and improvements were presented. Data acquired in these research processes can be used in the future to develop aircraft PSU (passenger service unit) and emergency oxygen generators.

  • Aircraft accidents these days, following the mega sizing trend of the aircraft, result in enormous losses of human lives apart from those of property, which cannot be replaced by any means. As most recently, in April 20, 2012, a Boeing 737 passenger plane departed Karachi on an augural flight to Islamabad, Pakistan, crashed close to an express highway on final approach, all 121 passengers and 6 crew members were killed. As such a large number of fatalities have been recorded in aircraft accidents while accident investigation results show that more than 95% of aircraft accidents are now survivable. There are three basic stages in surviving the aircraft accident: surviving the crash impact, the evacuation process and the hostile post evacuation environmental elements. These stages require the cabin crew's expeditious and appropriate actions on the basis of systematic and thorough cabin safety training in order to increase occupants' survivability, along with the passengers' preparedness. In this aspect, this paper examines the issues acting as the impediments to the passenger survival in inflight emergency situations, that are the deficiencies with cabin crew safety training, related performances and the shortcomings in passengers' knowledge on inflight safety information, leading to their inappropriate responses to emergency situations. These issues are analyzed and the root causes are identified, suggesting the resolving countermeasures.

  • We analyze Inter-Aircraft Distances between Two Closest Flying Passenger Aircrafts on a Global Scale from Real Aviation Databases. Then, We Reveal that the Distances Follow a Gamma-Pareto Distribution. Our Finding is Useful for Designing Wireless Transceivers Since it Gives the Probability Distribution Regarding the Link Distances which the Wireless Transceivers should Cover for Providing Internet Services.

  • The passenger security screening is a mandatory procedure for boarding the aircraft according to ICAO standard as well as national law of each country. The enhanced threat of terrorism have had the security procedure strengthened since 9/11 events. However the effectiveness of passenger screening is not satisfactory and the service level for passenger is getting worse because of tightened security measurements. This research studied the responsibility issue for the enhancement of the effectiveness and service quality in passenger security screening. The study concluded that a desirable responsibility assignment for passenger screening is to the airport authority at normal time and to the government authority at the time of high threat.

  • According to some statistics, about 13,000 passenger aircrafts are daily flying over the globe and these aircrafts are struck by a lightning flash at least once a year. But so far we have never heard lightning injured any passengers and crew members got shocked by lightning. The aircraft, lightning and the sky are inseparably related to each other. Accordingly, the aircraft and lightning are also inseparably related to each other. They say lightning is easily attracted to metals and these aircrafts are incidentally made of metal. Aircraft become statically and electrically charged when flying because of the friction with air. A lot of research and investigation to protect aircraft from the influence of lightening have been made since the early days. The following descriptions outline researches and investigations on how aircraft and ships get aways from lightning flashes during the flight or the sail.   • The base of leisure air activities are consistently expanding and its demand is expected to increase attributed to GDP growth and people's interest in its activity. Utilizing Visual Flight Rule, light sport aircrafts and ultra-light aircrafts are not under the effect of air traffic control center, which resulted in passenger injury due to emergency landing for adverse weather conditions and technical issues after pulling into mountain area, ocean and even urban area. Such events encouraged safety consciousness toward leisure aircraft activities and developing a measure to prevent a recurrence of the accident. This research focuses on suggesting compositive system for preventive safety management system by providing user based Flight information service and operating effective system, necessary for leisure aircraft activities.

  • Tail wing is important to designing of civil aircrafts, because it is responsible for aircraft stability and control. Tail wing has a role in aircraft control and makes aircraft fly stably without any pilot control input. Also, designing of tail wing determine trim drag force in whole aircraft. Center of gravity(CG) of aircraft travels with various effects as placement of passenger's seats, location of cargo bay, etc. In designing horizontal tail volume, aircraft CG travel has to be considered to have margin so that it should be sized to provide adequate stability and control for the airplane's entire CG range throughout the flight envelope. Finally, it is essential to have sufficient elevator control to perform stall at forward CG for all flaps down configurations. Such stalls establish the FAR stall speed which airplane take-off and landing performance. This paper deals with the process for tail wing design regarding the aircraft CG travel and results for 95-seat type turboprop aircraft.

The Research on the Development of Passenger Helmet to Prevent Head Trauma (두부 손상 보호를 위한 승객용 헬멧 개발 연구)

  • Introduction : Head trauma is the main cause of death in aircraft crash. In a Michigan study of structurally survivable, fatal accidents, 80% of the fatally injured had received head trauma. We tried to develop a new helmet for passengers, and perform its efficiency test. Methods : An aircraft helmet requires an excellent protection against head trauma, lightness, and small volumes. In addition, it must be wearable, fire resistant, and non toxic when it is burning. We developed two new helmets made from silicone foam which met all theses requirements. One was thin (2.5cm), and the other was thick (6.3cm). These looked like a motorcycle helmet and had only a soft silicone as liner material without an outer hard shell. Therefore we can carry them easily inside aircrafts. The standard test for helmet is Snell's drop test. It measures the impact acceleration of head shaped metal wearing helmet during we drop it at certain heights. Impact sites were total 5 sites (front, back, right, left and top) for each helmet. All these sites were impacted twice. Results : The thickness of impact sites varied from 2.5cm to 6.3cm. The impact acceleration of 2.5cm thickness site when it was dropped from 1.0 meter was 379g. But, that of 6.3cm thickness site when it was dropped from 1.5 meter was only 163g. Unfortunately, both helmets didn't meet the Snell Standard for motorcycle helmets. Discussion : If we add suitable outer hard shell, and change its thickness and design, the efficiency will be increased. A study indicated that helmet could reduce the risk of head trauma up to 85%. We made helmet for passengers in aircraft crash for the first time. If we improve its weak points, it will decrease the frequency of head trauma in aircraft craft.

  • Analyzing acoustic-structural systems such as automobiles and aircraft the FRF-based substructuring method is one of the most powerful tools. In this paper, an optimization procedure far the engine mount system of passenger car has been presented using the design sensitivity analysis based on the multi-domain FRF-based substructuring formulation. The proposed method is applied to an optimization problem of the engine mount system, of which objective is to minimize the interior sound over the concerned rpm range. The design variables selected are the stiffnesses of the engine mounts and bushes. Plugging the gradient information calculated by the proposed method into nonlinear optimization software, we can obtain the optimal stiffnesses of the engine mounts and bushings through design iterations. The optimized interior noise in the passenger car shows that the proposed method is very useful in the realistic situation.

  • The entertainment system of the aircraft has changed its paradigm in the form of using passenger electronic devices instead of using a fixed monitor. This has simplified the on-board equipment while the risk of safety has increased with the electric charging of portable electronic devices. Unlike personal portable electronic devices that do not have a transmission function, the use of Wi-Fi enabled electronic devices(T-PED) is allowed and the battery is required to be charged in the cabin. In this study, we used the NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System to investigate the effects of changes in wireless environment and entertainment service. Based on this, we analyzed the risks of personal electronic devices by sharing event occurrence cases caused by in-flight electronic equipment or passenger portable electronic devices(especially smart phones) from the viewpoint of aircraft safety management. This analysis includes identification of potential hazards and risk assessment, and finally the strategies for risk mitigation for safe use of portable electronic devices are suggested.
