A Study on Flow Analysis of Model Engine Coolant Flow Passage : Comparison with Experimental Data of Lotus Model and Flow Rate Control (엔진 냉각수 유동통로 모델에 대한 수치해석 : Lotus 모델의 실험 결과와의 비교 및 유량제어)

  • A numerical analysis on engine coolant is made by the use of FVM based general purpose 3 dimensional Navier-Stokes solver, TURB-3D. Numerical solutions are verified by comparison with the experimental data of Lotus model. The results show a good qualitative as well as quantitative comparison. Coolant flow rate control is attempted through adjusting the cross section area of passage base on the results of an original coolant passage. It is concluded from the results that the flow rate control is possible as attempted, and thus can be used in the real engine design.

  • The various types of fishways are installed at the multi-functional weirs in the four major rivers to minimize the negative effect due to the construction of the transverse structures. The movable weir was installed at the upstream of the ice-harbor type artificial fishway of the Dalseong weir in the Nakdong river, which can control the fishway flowrate regardless of the river flowrate. The incoming flowrate to the artificial fishway is closely related with the hydraulic characteristics that dominate the fish passage efficiency. Thus, it is crucial to find out the weir operation rule for properly sustaining efficient fish-passage, such as the optimized flowrate. In this study, the FLOW-3D was used to analyze and compare the various hydraulic characteristics associated with the passage efficiency, based upon the given different flowrate, and subsequently provide the optimized flowrate for the fishway movable weir to maintain the best efficient flow condition for the fish-passage.

Effects of Serial Passage on the Characteristics and Chondrogenic Differentiation of Canine Umbilical Cord Matrix Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells

  • Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are often known to have a therapeutic potential in the cell-mediated repair for fatal or incurable diseases. In this study, canine umbilical cord MSCs (cUC-MSCs) were isolated from umbilical cord matrix (n = 3) and subjected to proliferative culture for 5 consecutive passages. The cells at each passage were characterized for multipotent MSC properties such as proliferation kinetics, expression patterns of MSC surface markers and self-renewal associated markers, and chondrogenic differentiation. In results, the proliferation of the cells as determined by the cumulative population doubling level was observed at its peak on passage 3 and stopped after passage 5, whereas cell doubling time dramatically increased after passage 4. Expression of MSC surface markers (CD44, CD54, CD61, CD80, CD90 and Flk-1), molecule (HMGA2) and pluripotent markers (sox2, nanog) associated with self-renewal was negatively correlated with the number of passages. However, MSC surface marker (CD105) and pluripotent marker (Oct3/4) decreased with increasing the number of subpassage. cUC-MSCs at passage 1 to 5 underwent chondrogenesis under specific culture conditions, but percentage of chondrogenic differentiation decreased with increasing the number of subpassage. Collectively, the present study suggested that sequential subpassage could affect multipotent properties of cUC-MSCs and needs to be addressed before clinical applications.

  • The reciprocating compressor is widely used in the industry field, because it has simple principle and high efficiency. In this work, in order to improve design of discharge passage line in hydrogen compression system Numerical analysis was conducted. General information about an internal gas flow is presented by numerical analysis approach. Relating with hydrogen compressing system, which have an important role in hydrogen energy utilization, this should be a useful tool to observe the flow quickly and clearly. Flow characteristic analysis, including velocity, pressure and turbulence kinetic energy distribution of hydrogen gas going out from the cylinder to discharge-path line are presented in this paper. Discharge-passage model is designed based on real model of hydrogen compressor. Pressure boundary conditions are applied considering the real condition of operating system. The result shows velocity, pressure and turbulent kinetic energy are not distributed uniformly along the passage of the Hydrogen system. Path line or particles tracks help to demonstrate flow characteristics inside the passage. The existence of vortices and flow direction can be precisely predicted. Based on this result, the design improvement might be done.

A Clinical Study of Foreign Bodies in the Food and Air Passages 12-Year Review of 285 cases (식도 및 기도이물의 통계적 고찰)

  • The retrospective analysis of 285 cases with diagnoses of foreign bodies in the food and air passages that were managed at the Department of Otolaryngology, KangNam St.Mary's Hospital from Nov.1980 to Oct.1992 are reported. The results are as follows : 1) Among 285 cases, 254 cases(89.2%) were lodged in the esophagus and 31 cases (10.8%) in the air passage. The ratio between the foreign bodies in the food and those in the air passage was about 8.2 : 1 2) Among all cases, 171 cases were males(59.8%) and 114 cases were females(40.2%). 3) The group under 5 years old having foreign bodies was over half of all cases(56.5%), and the group over 51 years old was 15.5% of all cases. 4) The incidence of foreign bodies in order of frequency was coin(35.6%), fish bone (21.8%) and chicken bone(7.9%) in the food passage. Beans and peanuts were the most common foreign bodies in the air passage. 5) In the location of foreign bodies of the food passage, 208 cases(82.2%) were found in the first esophageal narrowing. In the air passage, the frequent sites of lodgement were the bronchus, trachea and larynx in order. 6) The 67.0% of all cases was removed within 24 hours. The duration of lodgement showed differences in relation with varieties of the foreign bodies.

  • A vacuum brazed cooling passage for an aircraft engine controller was designed. In order to predict the total pressure loss, which is the main design factor of the cooling passage, theoretical and numerical methods for the major loss and the minor loss considering the overall shape of the cooling passage are presented. This design and evaluation method can predict the pressure loss of the complex cooling passage shape for various flow conditions at the initial design step.

  • Probabilistic design methods can consider uncertainties of design variables and are widely used in the design of vertical breakwaters. The probabilistic design methods include a partial safety factor method, reliabilitybased design method, and performance-based design method. Especially the performance-based design method calculates the accumulated sliding distance during the lifetime of the breakwater or during a design storm. Recently a time-dependent performance-based design method has been developed based on the first-passage probability of individual sliding distance during a design storm. However, because the allowable criteria in the first-passage probability method are not established, the stability of structures cannot be quantitatively evaluated. In this study, the allowable first-passage probabilities for two limit states are proposed by calculating the first-passage probabilities for the cross-sections designed with various water depths and characteristics of extreme wave height distributions. The allowable first-passage probabilities are proposed as 5% and 1%, respectively, for the repairable limit state (allowable individual sliding distance of 0.03 m) and ultimate limit state (allowable individual sliding distance of 0.1 m). The proposed criteria are applied to the evaluation of the effect of wave-height increase due to climate change on the stability of the breakwater.

Distribution of Nutrients and Phytoplankton Biomass in the Area Around the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica (남극 남쉐틀랜드군도 주변 해역의 영양염과 식물플랑크톤 생물량 분포)

  • Temperature, salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll-a, and primary production were measured within the upper 200 m water column in the area around the South Shetland Islands in January, 2000. Surface temperature was relatively high in the Drake Passage north of the South Shetland Islands and low in the northeastern area of the Antarctic Peninsula. In contrast, surface salinity was low in the Drake Passage and increased toward the Antarctic Peninsula, reaching the maximum value in the northeastern area of the Antarctic Peninsula. Surface nutrients were low in the Drake Passage and high in the area near the South Shetland Islands. Surface chlorophyll-a was also low in the Drake Passage and near the Antarctic Peninsula and high in the area of the northern King George Island. The study area could be classified as four geographical zones based on the characteristic shape of the T/S diagrams;the Drake Passage, the Bransfield Strait, the mixed zone, and the Weddell Sea. Each geographical zone showed apparently different physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. Phytoplankton biomass was relatively low in the Drake Passage and the Weddell Sea and high in the Bransfield Strait and the mixed zone. The low phytoplankton biomass in the Weddell Sea could be explained by the low water temperature and deep surface mixing down to 200 m. The high grazing pressure and low availability of iron could be responsible for the low phytoplankton biomass in the Drake Passage.
