Electromagnetic radiation at the plasma frequency and its second harmonic, the so-called plasma emission, is fundamental process responsible for solar type II and III radio bursts. There have also been occasional observations of higher-harmonic plasma emissions in the solar-terrestrial environment. We will present that the simulation effort on characterizing the electron beam-generated plasma emission process at POSTECH. We have developed fully electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation code with three dimensions. We simulated harmonic plasma emission with various beam condition. Qualitative comparison with the traditional plasma frequency and second harmonic radiation theory is in good agreement. Higher harmonic emissions agree with the theory of coalescence of Langmuir and harmonic EM wave.
The discharge characteristics of the radio frequency (RF) surface dielectric barrier discharge have been simulated for the investigation of the ratio of the ion transit time to the RF period. From one-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation for a planar dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), it was observed that the high-frequency driving voltage confines the ions in the plasma because of a shorter RF period than the ion transit time. For two-dimensional surface dielectric barrier discharges, a fluid simulation is performed to investigate the characteristics of RF discharges from 1 MHz to 40 MHz. The ratio of the peak density to the average density decreases with the increasing frequency, and the spatiotemporal discharge patterns change abruptly with the change in the ratio of ion transit time to the RF period.
In this study, the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells with different thickness of the photelectrode film was simulated by using the electron-diffusion differential model. Through this simulation, the relationships between the thickness of the photoelectrode film and the performances (open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, and overall photoelectric-conversion efficiency) of cells were understood and the performances with different thickness of the photoelectrede film were also examined. For considering the refractive index in the liquid electrolyte and exploring the scattering effect of titanium dioxide particles with different sizes using the Mie light-scattering theory, the highest scattering effect of each particles was found out and the optimal size of the titanium dioxide particle was determined for light scattering in the photoelectrode film of dye-sensitized solar cell. Through experiment, the mixed titanium dioxide cell was better than the single titanium dioxide cell and generated a higher overall conversion efficiency because the optimal titanium dioxide particles in the phoelectrode film as light scattering.

The turbulence in the nonlinear regime of the electromagnetic ion-cyclotron (EMIC) instability are investigated via a particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. EMIC instability arises from anisotropic ion temperature and excites the Alfven ion-cyclotron (AIC) waves. The excited AIC waves undergo inverse-cascade via the nonlinear wave interaction of two AIC and one ion density modes. Induced ion density modes are the normal and second harmonic ion-acoustic (IA) waves. They have the same group velocity, but the second harmonic IA mode only generates the longitudinal electric field.

For enhancing the coverage of wireless networks and increasing the spectrum efficiency, small cell networks (SCNs) are considered to be one of the most prospective schemes. Most of the existing literature on resource allocation among non-cooperative small cell base stations (SBSs) has widely drawn close attention and there are only a small number of the cooperative ideas in SCNs. Based on the motivation, we further investigate the cooperative approach, which is formulated as a coalition formation game with power control algorithm (CFG-PC). First, we formulate the downlink sub-channel resource allocation problem in an SCN as a coalition formation game. Pareto order and utilitarian order are applied to form coalitions respectively. Second, to achieve more availability and efficiency power assignment, we expand and solve the power control using particle swarm optimization (PSO). Finally, with our proposed algorithm, each SBS can cooperatively work and eventually converge to a stable SBS partition. As far as the transmit rate of per SBS and the system rate are concerned respectively, simulation results indicate that our proposed CFG-PC has a significant advantage, relative to a classical coalition formation algorithm and the non-cooperative case.

A heterogeneous cellular network (HCN) is useful to increase the spectral and energy efficiency of wireless networks and to reduce the traffic load from the macro cell. The performance of the secondary user equipment (SUE) is affected by interference from the eNodeB (eNB) in a macro cell. To decrease the interference between the macro cell and the small cell, allocating resources properly is essential to an HCN. This study considers the scenario of a software-defined heterogeneous cellular network and performs the resource allocation process. First, we show the system model of HCN and formulate the optimization problem. The optimization problem is a complex process including power and frequency resource allocation, which imposes an extremely high complexity to the HCN. Therefore, a hierarchical resource allocation scheme is proposed, which including subchannel selection and a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based power allocation algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed hierarchical scheme is effective in improving the system capacity and energy efficiency.
This paper contains results of the theoretical studies of the electrical breakdown properties in sulfur hexafluoride. Since the strong interaction of high-energy electrons with the polyatomic sulfur hexafluoride molecule causes their rapid deceleration to the lower energy of electron capture and dissociative attachment, the breakdown is only possible at relatively high field strengths. From the breakdown voltage curves, the effective yields that characterize secondary electron productions have been estimated. Values of the effective yields are found to be more consistent if they are derived from the experimentally determined values of the ionization coefficient and the breakdown voltages. In addition, simulations were performed using an one-dimensional Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision code. The obtained simulation results agree well with the available experimental data with an error margin of less than 10% over a wide range of pressures and the gap sizes. The differences between measurements and calculations can be attributed to the differences between simulation and experimental conditions. Simulation results are also compared with the theoretical predictions obtained by using expression that describes linear dependence of the breakdown voltage in sulfur hexafluoride on the pressure and the gap size product.
We present a new computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation code. The code employs the moving and polyhedral unstructured mesh scheme, which is known as a superior approach to the conventional SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics) and AMR (adaptive mesh refinement) schemes. The code first generates unstructured meshes by the Voronoi tessellation at every time step, and then solves the Riemann problem for surfaces of every Voronoi cell to update the hydrodynamic states as well as to move former generated meshes. For the second-order accuracy, the MUSCL-Hancock scheme is implemented. To increase efficiency for generating Voronoi tessellation we also develop the incremental expanding method, by which the CPU time is turned out to be just proportional to the number of particles, i.e., O(N). We will discuss the applications of our code in the context of cosmological simulations as well as numerical experiments for galaxy formation.
We present a new hydrodynamic simulation code based on the Voronoi tessellation for estimating the density precisely. The code employs both of Lagrangian and Eulerian description by adopting the movable mesh scheme, which is superior to the conventional SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics) and AMR (adaptive mesh refinement) schemes. The code first generates unstructured meshes by the Voronoi tessellation at every time step, and then solves the Riemann problem for all surfaces of each Voronoi cell so as to update the hydrodynamic states as well as to move current meshes. Besides, the IEM (incremental expanding method) is devised to compute the Voronoi tessellation to desired degree of speed, thereby the CPU time is turned out to be just proportional to the number of particles, i.e., O(N). We discuss the applications of our code in the context of cosmological simulations as well as numerical experiments for galaxy formation.

In particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation studies related to ion-ion two-stream instability, a reduced ion-to-electron mass ratio is often employed to save computation time. But it was not clearly verified how electrons dynamics are coupled with the slower evolution of ion-ion interactions under the external electric field. We have studied the ion beam driven instability using a 1D electrostatic PIC code by comparing different rescaling of parameter with real ion mass from the reference simulation with reduced ion mass. As the external electric field is stronger, the excited unstable mode range was more sensitively affected by the system size with the real mass ratio than the reduced ion mass. The results show that the reduced mass ratio should be used cautiously in PIC code as the electron dynamics can modify the ion instabilities. Additionally we found the formation of electron flat-top distribution in the final saturation stage. Simulation results show that in the early phase electrostatic solitary waves are quasi-periodically formed, but later they are fully dissipated resulting in heated, flat-top distributions. New electron beam components are occasionally formed. These are a consequence of the interaction with solitary wave structures. We parametrically investigate the development of electron phase space distributions for various drift speeds of ion beams and temperature ratios between ions and electrons
