In the chemical, mineral and electronics industries, mechanically stirred tanks are widely used for complex liquid and particle mixing processes. In order to understand the complex phenomena that occur in such tanks, it is necessary to investigate flow field in the vessel. Most difficulty on the numerical analysis of stirred tank flow field focused particularly on free surface analysis. In order to decrease the dead zone and improve the flow efficiency of a system with free surface, this paper presents a new method that overcomes free surface effects by properly combining the benefits of using experiment and 3-D CFD. This method is applied to study the mixing flow in an agitated tank. From the results of experimental studies using the PIV (particle image velocimetry) system, the distribution of mixing flow including free surface are obtained. And these values that are expressed as a velocity vector field have been patched for simulating the free surface. The results of velocity distribution obtained by 3-D CFD are compared with those of experimental results. The experimental data and the simulation results are in good agreement.
The spray characteristics of the rotating fuel injection system were investigated. The special test rig was devised to get the spatial and momentary droplet information. This experimental apparatus consists of a high-speed motor, a shaft, a rotating fuel nozzle and an acrylic case. Spray droplet size and velocity were measured by PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) and instantaneous velocity field was measured by 1'IV (Particle Image Velocimetry) system. At the same time, spray visualization was performed by using ND-YAG laser-based flash photography. From these two different laser diagnostic techniques, we could get spatial and instantaneous spray information fur rotating fuel injection system. The results presented in this paper indicate that spray characteristics such as droplet size, velocity and spray pattern were strongly influenced by rotational speed.
The purpose of the present experimental study is to apply multi-point simultaneous measurement by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) to high-speed flow region within a domestic boiler circulation pump. Two different kinds of flow rate($27{\ell}/min,\;19{\ell}/min$)are selected as experimental condition. A volute casing and Impeller made of transparent Polycarbonate were made for the easy access of the illumination laser via fiber optical line and cylinder lens assembly to the measuring region. A CCD camera is syncronized with AOM to acquire clear original particle images. Optimized cross correlation identification to obtain velocity vectors is implemented by direct calculation of correlation coefficients. The instantaneous and time-mean velocity distribution, velocity profile and kinetic energy are represented quantitatively at the full-scale region for the deeper understanding of the unsteady flow characteristics in a commercial circulation pump.
Characteristics of flows at T-junction duct with and without orifices are investigated in this paper. Experiments and PIV visualization were carried out for several flow rates. Two-dimensional PIV experimental apparatus was decided by numerical analysis. PIV visualization was also coded to visualize flow fields at junctions for two-dimensional case. For the PIV visualization system, Grey-Level Cross-Correlation particle tracking algorithm was used to calculate the flow fields. Vinyl chloride polymer particles of $100{\sim}150{\mu}m$ of diameter are used in this visualization. The PIV visualization results showed relatively good agreement with Experimental data.
Flow structure inside a refrigerating compartment of a scale-down display cooler model was investigated experimentally by using PIV (particle image velocimetry) method, a reliable velocity field measurement technique, in the present study. In addition, we also carried out flow visualization regarding flow structure and particle movement inside a display cooler by using a tracer method. As a result, the mean velocity field measurement shows a large scale vortical flow structure inside a refrigerating compartment due to strong entrainment flow, going through a base plate open gaps.

The internal flow field in a centrifugal pump working at the several flow conditions has been measured by using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique with the laser induced fluorescence (LIF) particles and the refractive index matched (RIM) facilities. The impeller of the centrifugal pump has an outlet diameter in 100mm, and consists of six two-dimensional curvature backward swept blades of constant thickness. Measured results give reliable flow patterns in the pump. It is obvious that application of LIF particle and RIM are the key methods to obtain the right PIV measured results in pump internal flow.
Micro-resolution Particle Image Velocimetry(Micro-PIV) was used to measure the flow in a micro-branch(Micro-Bypass). In this paper, effects of particle lump at the tip of a Micro-branch and difficulties of Micro-PIV measurements for microfluidics with branch passage were described. Micro-bypass was composed of a straight channel(200(100)${\mu}$m width ${\times}$ 80${\mu}$m height) and two branches which has 100(50)${\mu}$m width ${\times}$ 80${\mu}$m height. One of branches was straight and the other was curved. Experiments were performed at three regions along streamwise direction(entrance, middle and exit of branch) and five planes along vertical direction (0, ${\pm}$10, ${\pm}$20 ${\mu}$m) for the range of Re=0.24, 1.2, 2.4. Numerical simulation was done to compare with the measurements and understand the effects of particle lump at the tip of branch. And another fluid(3% poly vinyl Alcohol aqueous solution) were adapted for this study, so there were no particle sticking. In this case, we could get velocity difference between straight and curved branches.
This study measured the velocity of magnetic particles inside the power generation using external heat sources. Single Plane Illumination Microscopy (SPIM) was used to measure magnetic particles that are simultaneously affected by bubbly flow and magnetic field. It has the advantage of reducing errors due to particle superposition by illuminating the thin light sheet. The hydraulic diameter of the power generation is 3mm. Its surface is covered with a coil with a diameter of 0.3 mm. The average diameter of a magnetic particle is 200nm. The excitation and emission wavelengths are 530 and 650nm, respectively. In order to find out the flow characteristics, a total of four velocity fields were calculated in wide and narrow gap air bubbles, between the wall and the air bubble and just below the air bubble. Magnetic particles showed up to 8.59% velocity reduction in the wide gap between air bubbles due to external magnetic field.
Burner of Flat Flame type expects the uniform flame distribution and NOx reduction. The characteristics of Flat Flame Burner become different according to swirl number in the burner throat. Experiments were focused on swirl effect by four types of swirler with different swirl numbers (0, 0.26, 0.6 and 1.24). It shows many different flow patterns according to swirl number using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) method. The flow of burner with swirler is recirculated by pressure difference between its center and outside. Recirculated air makes stable in flame, and reduced pollutant gas. In case of swirl number 0, main flow passes through axial direction. As swirl number increased, The backward flow develops in the center part of burner and Flow gas recirculates. This is caused by radial flow momentum becomes larger than axial flow by swirled air and the pressure at center drops against surrounding. As swirl number increases, the radial and axial velocity was confirmed to be larger than low swirl numbers. And turbulence intensity have similar pattern. The CTRZ(Central Toroidal Recirculation Zone) is shown evidently when y/D=1 and S=1.24. The boundary-layer between main flow and recirculated flow is shown that the width is seen to be decreased as swirl number increased.
