Recently there is an increasing interest in particulate matter emission because of new emission regulations, health awareness and environmental problems. It requires to improve particulate measurement techniques as well as to reduce soot emissions from combustion systems. As mentioned above, it is demanded that reduction techniques together with measurement techniques of exhausted particulate matters in combustion systems such as vehicles. However, measurement techniques of particulate matters should be prior to reduction techniques of that because it is able to know an increase and a decrease of exhausted particulate matters when measured particulate matters. Therefore, in this study, we report the measurement of soot primary-particle size using time-resolved laser induced incandescence (TIRE-LII) technique in laminar ethylene diffusion flame. As an optical method, laser induced incandescence is one of well known methods to get information for spatial and temporal soot volume fraction and soot primary particle size. Furthermore, TIRE-LII is able to measure soot primary particle size that is decided to solve the decay ate of signal S $(t_1)$ and S $(t_2)$ at two detection time. In laminar ethylene diffusion flame, visual flame height is 40 mm from burner tip and measurement points are height of 15, 20, 27.5, 30 mm above burner tip along radial direction. As increasing the height of the flame from burne. tip, primary particle size was increased to HAB(Height Above Burner tip)=20mm, and then decreased from HAB=27.5 mm to 30 mm. This results show the growth and oxidation processes for soot particles formed by combustion.
Recently, the nano-PM's number concentration emitted by diesel internal combustion engine has focused on attention because this particulate matters are suspected being hazardous of human health. In this study, The nano-PM mass and size of diesel passenger vehicles were measured on chassis dynamometer test bench. The particulate matters(PM) emissions of these vehicles were investigated by number concentration too. A condensation particle counter(CPC) system was applied to measure the particle number and size concentration of diesel exhaust particles at the end of dilution tunnel along the NEDC(ECE15+EUDC) and CVS-75 vehicle test mode. As the research result, the characteristic of vehicle test mode on the diesel nano-particle number and size distribution was investigated in this study.
This paper is to investigate the characteristics of exhaust emissions and nano-particle emission from diesel passenger vehicle according to using biodiesel fuel as an alternative fuel. In this work, the particulate matters (PM) of exhaust emissions in diesel engine were investigated by number of particles and mass measurement. The mass of the total PM was measured using the standard gravimetric measurement method, the total number concentrations were measured on a ECE15+EUDC driving cycle using Condensation Particle Counter (CPC). Total PM emission was reduced $2{\sim}38%$ and number concentration was reduced $1{\sim}27%$ according to increasing blended ratio of biodiesel with diesel fuel. Total PM emission was reduced more than particle number emission because volatile particles were measured in total PM but were not measured in particle number emissions.
Particulate matters (PM) that is generated by most diesel engine is regulated by the mass concentration measured by the conventional method it had been. Recently, Europe PMP (Particle Measurement Program) decided to start the regulation of vehicle's nano-sized particle number (PN) from the year of 2011 because of nano-particle's higher degree of harm to the human body. So firstly, the standard level of PN emission is introduced in the Euro 5/6 emissions regulation with a limit of $6{\times}10^{11}$ per km for light duty vehicle. Also KPMP(Korea Particle Measurement Program) was organized to copy quickly international technical trend. In this paper, it was investigated the nano-sized PN measurement characteristics for different particle generators between spray type and soot type. And the difference ratio between particle generators, the characteristic of PN concentration, counting efficiency and linearity was analyzed. Then, we make conclusions as followed. When particle diameter is increased, counting efficiency of two generators is decreased. Also Secondary calibration method is more higher 3% than Primary calibration method. Finally, SOF which is included in soot particles is not totally removed so it have great influence on test result of counting efficiency and linearity.
Particulate matters in a water distribution system are main causes of turbidity and discoloration of tap water. They could be removed by conventional or uni-directional flushing in a water distribution system. The behaviors and required flow velocity of particles are not well known for their flushing. A model water main and hydrant were made from transparent acrylic pipe of 30mm and 16mm in diameter, respectively. We analyzed the effect of flushing velocity, particle density, and particle diameter. We found that the existence of break-though velocities at which particles begin to be removed, and which are affected by their physical properties. The removal efficiencies seemed to be influenced by resuspension capabilities related to their upward movement from the bottom. Heavy particles like scale were hard to remove through upflow hydrant because the falling velocity, calculated using Stokes' law, was higher. Particle removal efficiencies of upward hydrant and downward drain showed minor differences. Additionally, the length between hydrant and control valve affected flushing efficiency because the particulate matters were trapped in this space by inertia and recirculating flow.
In recent years, environmental damage to urban area becomes serious problem due to the exhaust emissions by increasing the number of vehicle . Especially, diesel particulate matters(DPM) are hazardous air pollutant s to human health and environment. The reduction technologies of exhaust emissions from diesel engines are improvement of engine combustion, fuel quality and development of diesel exhaust aftertreatment. In this study, a diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) that is one of diesel exhaust aftertreatments was made for performance evaluation . It was tested for NA and turbocharged engine by D-13 mode that currently be used for regulation driving test mode in Korea Scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) was used for the analysis of the particle size distribution with and w/o DOC. As the results , for NA and tubochartged engine, CO, THC, DPM was respectively reduced 85.7, 40.7,3.3% and 79.1, 53.1, 11.6% by DOC. Test results of particle size distribution was showed that particle number is 107 ~108per ㎤ , 2 $\times$105 ~5$\times$105$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ for weight concentration and 100~200nm for particle mean size in diesel engine and there is no effect to reduce the particle concentration by the DOC.
The x-ray fluorescence(XRF) is one of the most convenient and widely used techniques for analyzing trace elements in ambient particulate matters. The objects of the study were to estimate the optimum exposure time using the XRF, to investigate the distributions of heavy metal levels in particulate matters, and finally to study seasonal variation for the concentrations of total suspended particulate matters(TSP) and size fractionated particulate matters. The suspended particulate matters had been collected by a cascade impactor having 9 size fragnated stages for 3 years(Dec. 1988 to Nov. 1991) in Kyung Hee University-Suwon Campus. The particulate matters were then collected on each stage by membrane filters. The weight concentrations were determined by the XRF system. Thus, seasonal variations and relationship between concentration and particle size could be investigated. Resulting distribution was bimodal with the coarse and the fine particle groups minimum occurring around 2.1 to 3.3 $\mu$m as an aerodynamic diameter. To determine optimum exposure time of the XRF for various trace inorganic elements, membrane filters and the NIST standard filters were extensively studied. Using a statistical technique, optimum exposure time was estimated for each trace element and overall elements. The time was then determined as 20 seconds for the XRF system. The concentration of TSP was 123.9$\mum/m^3$ on an arithmatic average. The levels of each inorganic metal were Si 2420.0ng/$m^3$, Fe 977.1ng/$m^3$, and so on. The Pb. Zn, and Cu abounded in the fine mode group, while Ca, Fe, Si, Al, and K in the coarse group. Marked seasonal variation of TSP and metal concentrations was observed. The concentration of heavy metals in the fine mode was highest in winter : on the other hand, that in the coarse mode was highest in spring.
The concentration and size analysis of in-situ suspended particulate material were measured using an optical instrument, LISST-100, in the bottom layer at the three inlets of the Seomjin River Estuary, mouth of Gwangyang bay, and Gwangyang bay-side of the Namhae Bridge. In the Seomjin river estuary and mouth of Gwangyang bay-side of the Namhae Bridge, the in-situ mean grain size of the suspended material changed from a uni-modal distribution with a dominant peak at a coarse fraction to a bi-modal distribution with a secondary peak at the finer particles. Seomjin River. The interactions between suspended particulate concentration and beam attenuation coefficient of suspended particulate matters depended on the supply of finer and coarser particles in the mouth of Gwangyang Bay and Seomjin River. So, interactions reflected difference of the concentration, mean size and sorting of suspended particulate matters. The difference of interaction showed dynamic behaviors to the resuspension and deflocculation processes increased river discharge. This showed that it may be possible to use the interactions between the suspended particle concentration and beam attenuation coefficient to monitor the temporal and spatial distributions of in-situ particles.
Atmospheric particulate matters (A. P. M. ) were collected on quartz-fiber filters from March 1985 to May 1986, using the Andersen high-volume air sampler and contents of six heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb Ni) in the A. P. M. were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. These heavy metals were divided into the three groups with respect to their particle size distribution. Fe and Mn were mainly associated with coarse particles (diameter > 2.0 $\mu$m), but Pb and Ni were related fine particles (diameter < 2.0 $\mu$m). Cu and Zn had mized size distributions in both of them. In the seasonal variation of heavy metals, the contents of Fe and Mn in spring and Ni and Pb in winter were higher than any other season. There were high mutual correlation between Fe and Mn coarse particles, and between Pb and Ni in fine particles.
In situ particle size spectra are obtained from two sequent cruises in order to evaluate the physical consequences of suspended particulate matters caused by episodic storm runoff from the Santa Ana River watershed, an urbanized coastal watershed. Suspended particles from various sources including surface runoff, near-bed resuspension, and phytoplankton are identified in empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis and an entropy-based parameterization (Shannon entropy). The first EOF mode is associated with high turbidity and fine particles as indicated by the elevated beam attenuation near the Santa Ana River and Newport Bay outlets, and the second EOF mode explains the suspended sediment dispersal and particle coarsening at the near-surface plume. Chlorophyll particles are also distinguished by negative magnitudes of the first EOF mode, which is supported by the relationship between fluorescence and beam attenuation. The integrated observation between the first EOF mode and the Shannon entropy index accentuates the characteristics of two different structures and/or sources of sediment particles; the near-surface plumes are originated from runoff water outflow, while the near-bottom particles are resuspended due to increased wave heights or mobilizing bottom turbidity currents. In a coastal pollution context, these methods may offer useful means of characterizing particle-associated pollutants for purposes of source tracking and environmental interpretation.
