Development and Evaluation of an Inexpensive Weighing Chamber for Particulate Filters (미세먼지 여지의 무게 측정을 위한 저비용 계량챔버 개발 및 성능평가)

  • Filter and microbalance sensitivity in measuring fine particulate matter mass is greatly influenced by particulate properties and environmental factors. Temperature and humidity control inside a measuring chamber with a microbalance, and neutralization of static charges on filters are essential for consistent filter weighing. Commercial weighing chambers are expensive with a unit price of tens of millions won. This study developed an inexpensive weighing chamber for weighing fine particulate matter and evaluatedits weighing performance. A microbalance with 1 ㎍ precision was used to measure the weight of a filter. The microbalance was set in a transparent acrylic enclosure (100 × 60 × 65 cm3) equipped with temperature and humidity control equipments. Weighing performance of the chamber was examined using Teflon filters with or without different particulate sample types. Temperature and humidity were maintained at approximately 23.2±1.2 ℃ and 36.2±1.8℃ for 8 days, respectively.

  • Diesel particulate trap is a core technology for the reduction of PM from diesel vehicles This study presents the features and the characteristics of DPF system when using pellet type filters. In comparison with wall-flow filter, the pellet filter has the advantages of cracking free during regeneration and shape flexibility. Experiments are conducted in a test bench simulated as diesel engine exhaust condition. Pressure drop and particle loading rate was compared by using two pellet filters having the porosity of 70% and 0%. Also its regeneration was tested.

  • This work presents experimental results of filter media test by using particles from $0.02\;to\;0.6{\mu}m$ in diameter and by applying different charging states. In order to investigate the electret filter performance, the collection efficiency and the pressure drop of filter were measured. The face velocities of test filters varied from 2.4 to 20.4 cm/s. Another experiment setup for the cartridge cabin air filter was used to get an collection efficiency in submicron region. After charging level of electret filter severely decreased, the change of collection efficiency was verified. Experimental results show that the reliability of electret filters can be poor in some conditions.

  • Computational studies have been performed to analyze the particle loadings onto the filters according to the different inflow pattern of dusty gas and the flow uniformities on the filter surface of back-blown gas at different permeability of porous media setup at the filter outlet. This is preliminary study to find how we can reduce the regeneration time and improve the regeneration efficiency of filters with dust layer.

  • Navigation is a crucial capability for all types of manned or unmanned vehicles. However, vehicle navigation in underwater environments still remains a challenging problem since GPS signals for position fixes are not available in the water. Terrain-referenced underwater navigation is an alternative navigation technique that utilizes geometric information of the subsea terrain to correct drift errors due to dead-reckoning or inertial navigation. Terrain-referenced navigation requires the description of an undulating terrain surface as a mathematical function or table, which often leads to a highly nonlinear estimation problem. Recently, PFs (Particle Filters), which do not require any restrictive assumptions about the system dynamics and uncertainty distributions, have been widely used for nonlinear filtering applications. However, PF has considerable computational requirements which used to limit its applicability to problems of relatively low state dimensions. This study proposes the use of a Rao-Blackwellized particle filter that is computationally more efficient than the standard PF for terrain-referenced underwater navigation involving a moderate number of states, and its performance is compared with that of the extended Kalman filter algorithm. The validity and feasibility of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through numerical simulations.

  • One of the most fundamental functions required for an intelligent agent is to estimate its current position based upon uncertain sensor data. In this paper, we explain the implementation of a robot localization system using Particle filters, which are the most effective one of the probabilistic localization methods, and then present the result of experiments for evaluating the performance of our system. Through conducting experiments to compare the effect of the noise-free model with that of the noisy state transition model considering inherent errors of robot actions, we show that it can help improve the performance of the Particle filter localization to apply a state transition model closely approximating the uncertainty of real robot actions.

  • This paper presents the multi-object tracking approach using the background difference and particle filtering by monte carlo sampling. We apply particle filters based on probabilistic importance sampling to multi-object independently. We formulate the object observation model by the histogram distribution using color information and the object dynaminc model for the object motion information. Our approach does not increase computational complexity and derive stable performance. We implement the whole Bayesian maximum likelihood framework and describes robust methods coping with the real-world object tracking situation by the observation and transition model.

  • An electret filter is composed of permanently charged electet fibers and is widely used in applications requiring high collection efficiency and low-pressure drop. In this work, the collection efficiency of the filter media used in manufacturing cabin air filters was investigated by using poly-disperse particles when submicron particles are loaded. Long-term experiments were conducted by applying different charging states, which are spray electrification and charge equilibrium by bipolar ionization. In order to investigate on the effect of particle loading in filter media, NaCl particles were generated from 0.1% and 1% solutions by an atomizer. In NaCl 0.1%, the collection efficiency of electret filter decreased and then did not change in equilibrium state. In the case of relative larger particles of NaCl 1%, collection efficiency for the equilibrium charged particles increases due to the particle loading on the filter fibers. Particles charged by spray electrification are small in collection efficiency after equilibrium state and increase of filter media's pressure drop was very low in comparison of the equilibrium charged particles.

  • Predictions of diesel particulate filtration are typically made by modeling of a particle collection, and providing particle trapping levels in terms of a pressure drop. In the present study, a series of single channel diesel particulate filter (DPF) experiments are conducted, the pressure traces are inversely analyzed and essential filtration parameters are deducted for model closure. A DPF filtration model is formulated with a non-linear description of soot cake regression. Dependence of soot cake porosity, packing density, permeability, and soot density in filter walls on convective-diffusive particle transportation is examined. Sensitivity analysis was conducted on model parameters, relevant to the mode of transition. Soot cake porosity and soot packing density show low degrees of dispersion with respect to the Peclet number and have asymptotes at 0.97 and $70\;kg/m^3$, respectively, at high Peclet number. Soot density in the filter wall, which is inversely proportional to filter wall Peclet number, controls the filtration mode transition but exerts no influence on termination pressure drop. The percolation constant greatly alters the extent of pressure drop, but is insensitive to volumetric flow rate or temperature of exhaust gas at fixed operation mode.

A Numerical Study on the Design of a Grease Filter for Kitchen Ventilation (주방환기용 그리스 필터의 형상설계에 관한 수치해석)

  • A grease filter is used to remove grease generated from a cooking appliance in a kitchen. Since the inertial impaction is a dominant particle removal mechanism of the grease filter, the performance of the filter is greatly affected by the geometry. This numerical study has been conducted to investigate the effect of geometry on the performance of grease filters for four models having nominal flowrate of 100 m$^3$/h. Four models were designed by changing the shape of impaction surface, the length of eyelid, and the number of eyelids of the grease filter. The flow field and particle trajectories in the grease filter with a flow chamber were simulated using the commercial code of STAR-CD. The difference of air velocity and pressure distributions among four models was discussed in detail. The collection efficiency curves and the pressure drops of four models were also compared. It was found that the grease filter model with flat top surfaces shows highest performance among four models, having high particle collection efficiency and relatively low pressure drop. The cutoff diameter of this model representing 50-% collection efficiency is about 7.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for water droplets at 100 m$^3$/h.
