  • Fullerene/polystyrene nanoparticles having the average size of 300 nm ~ 1 ${\mu}m$ were prepared by emulsion polymerization in aqueous medium. Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) and potassium persulfate were used as a dispersant and an initiator, respectively. The contents of fullerene in the nanoparticle were controlled to be from 10 to 57 wt% by varying the feed ratio, which was confirmed by IR-spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses, and elemental analyses. Dynamic light scattering experiments revealed the particles have a broad size distribution. Further characterizations of the nanoparticles were performed by using SEM and TEM observation. The high content of fullerene in the particles will find applications in photovoltaic and organic semiconducting area.

  • The purpose of this study was to characterize the reaction of Cu surface with Cu slurry and CMP performance as a function of additives in CMP slurry. The polish rate of Cu was dependent on the kind of organic acids added in slurry. It was considered that polish rate of Cu was dependent on the concentration of carboxylates and mean particle size. When the etchant and oxidant were added in slurry, the highest removal rate and lower etch rate were measured at neutral pH. The addition of etchant, oxidant and pH adjustor played key roles of CMP ability in slurry. As the pH increased, polish rate of Cu was increased by the enhanced the mechanical effects due to effective dispersion of slurry particles. Alumina abrasives was more desirable for 1st step slurry because of high removal rate of Cu and high selectivity ratio among TaN and Cu.

  • This study investigates the dispersibility of carbon in carbon contained ammonium diuranate (C-ADU) gel particles and the characteristics of C-ADU gel liquid droplets produced by the vibrating nozzle and integrated aging-washing-drying equipment. It was noted that the excellent stability of carbon dispersion was only observed in the C-ADU gel particle that contained carbon black named CB 10. ADU gel liquid droplets containing carbon particles with the excellent sphericity of approximately 1,950 mm were then obtained using an 80-100-Hz vibrating nozzle system. Dried C-ADU gel particles obtained by the aging-washing-drying equipment were thermal decomposed until $500^{\circ}C$ at a rate of $1^{\circ}C/min$ in an air or in 4% $H_2$ gas atmosphere. The thermally decomposed C-ADU gel particles showed 24% weight loss and a more complicated profile than that of ADU gel particles.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the heat storage characteristics of a packed bed according to periodically oscillating flows. Experiments have been performed to measure transient temperature distributions in solid and fluid Phases of the porous media. A simplified analytical model has been developed with intra-particle and dispersion effects neglected, and non-dimensional parameters have been derived. The transient temperature distributions according to the simplified numerical model agree well with the experimental results. Heat storage efficiencies defined in two different ways are obtained for various time periods and face velocities.

  • In order to enhance sinterability of W-Cu composites used for heat sink materials, mechanical alloying process where both homogeneous mixing of component powders and fine dispersion of minor phase can be easily attained was employed. Nanostructured W-Cu powders prepared by mechanical alloying showed W grain size ranged of 20-50 nm and were able to be efficiently sintered owing to the fine particle size as well as uniform distribution of Cu phase. The thermal properties such as electrical resistivity, coefficient of thermal expansion and thermal conductivity were evaluated as functions of temperature and Cu content. It was found that the coefficient of thermal expansion could be controlled by changing Cu content. The measured electrical resistivities and thermal diffusivities were also varied with Cu content. The thermal conductivities calculated from the values of resistivities and diffusivities showed similar tendency as a function of temperatures. However, this is in contradiction with thermal conductivities of pure W and Cu which decrease with increasing temperature.

  • The effect of the mixing ratio of spherical silica on the electrical insulation breakdown strength in an epoxy/silica composite was studied. Spherical silicas with two average particle sizes of $5{\mu}m$ and $20{\mu}m$ were mixed in different mixing ratios, and their total filling content was fixed at 60 wt%. In order to observe the dispersion of the silicas and the interfacial morphology between silica and epoxy matrix, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used. The electrical insulation breakdown strength was estimated in sphere-sphere electrodes with different insulation thicknesses of 1, 2, and 3 mm. Electrical insulation breakdown strength decreased with increasing mixing ratio of $5/20{\mu}m$ and the thickness dependence of the breakdown strength was also observed.

  • Polystyrene (PS) was coated on carbonyl iron (CI) particles via dispersion polymerization to produce core-shell structured CI/PS particles and adopted as magnetorheological (MR) material. Two MR fluids were prepared by dispersing CI/PS and CI particles in silicone oil. Their MR and tribological properties were investigated using a rheometer and a reciprocating friction and wear tester, respectively. Experimental data showed that tribological properties of MR fluid based on CI/PS particles are significantly enhanced compared to those of CI based MR fluid. Sedimentation problem of CI/PS MR fluid was also expected to be improved due to relatively lower density of CI/PS particles.

  • Many numerical methods have been developed since 1961, but unresolved issues remain. This study developed a numerical method to address these issues and determine the coefficients and properties of rotational waves with a shear current in a finite water depth. The number of unknown constants was reduced significantly by introducing a wavelength-independent coordinate system. The reference depth was calculated independently using the shooting method. Therefore, there was no need for partial derivatives with respect to the wavelength and the reference depth, which simplified the numerical formulation. This method had less than half of the unknown constants of the other method because Newton's method only determines the coefficients. The breaking limit was calculated for verification, and the result agreed with the Miche formula. The water particle velocities were calculated, and the results were consistent with the experimental data. Dispersion relations were calculated, and the results are consistent with other numerical findings. The convergence of this method was examined. Although the required series order was reduced significantly, the total error was smaller, with a faster convergence speed.
