The white aluminum phases in acid mine drainage usually precipitates when mixed with stream waters with relatively high pH. The minerals in white precipitates play important roles in controlling the behavior of heavy metals by adsorbing and coprecipitation. By the phase transition of these minerals in white precipitates, dissolution and readsorption of heavy metals may occur. This study was conducted to obtain preliminary information on the phase transition of the mineral phases in white precipitates. In this study, the mineral phase changes in the white precipitates collected from the stream around Dogye Mining Site over time were investigated with different pH values and temperatures. White precipitates consist mainly of basaluminite, amorphous $Al(OH)_3$ and a small amount of $Al_{13}$-tridecamer. During aging, the incongruent dissolution of the basaluminite occurs first, increasing the content of the amorphous $Al(OH)_3$. After that, pseudoboehmite is finally precipitated following the precursor phase of pseudoboehmite. At $80^{\circ}C$, this series of processes was clearly observed, but at relatively low temperatures, no noticeable changes were observed from the initial condition with coexisting basaluminite and amorphous $Al(OH)_3$. At high pH, the desorption of $SO{_4}^{2-}$ group in basaluminite was initiated to promote phase transition to the pseudoboehmite precursor. Over time, the solution pH decreases due to the dissolution and phase transition of the minerals, and even after the precipitation of pseudoboehmite, only the particle size slightly increased but no clear cystal form was observed.
Triglyceride solid lipid with medium chain fatty acid, tricaprin (TC), was used as a core matrix of lipid nanoparticles (LN) to solubilize water-insoluble paclitaxel and enhance the stability of nanoparticles by immobilization of incorporated drug in the solid core during storage at low temperature. In the present study, TC-LN containing paclitaxel was prepared by hot melt homogenization method using TC as a core lipid and phospholipids as stabilizers. The particle size of TC-LN containing paclitaxel was less than 200 nm and its zeta potential was around -40 mV. Calorimetric analysis showed TC core could be solidified by freezing and thawing in the manufacturing process in which the hot dispersion should be prepared at elevated temperature and subsequently cooled to obtain solid lipid nanoparticles. The melting transition of TC core was observed at $27.5^{\circ}C$, which was lower than melting point of TC bulk. The particle size of TC-LN remained unchanged when kept at $4^{\circ}C$. Paclitaxel containing TC-LN showed comparable anticancer activity to the Cremophore ELbased paclitaxel formulation against human ovarian (OVCAR-3) and breast (MCF-7) cancer cell lines. Thus, lipid nanoparticles with medium chain solid lipid may have a potential as alternative delivery system for parenteral administration of paclitaxel.
Three isocyanate groups of IP-$75^{(R)}$ and one hydroxyl group of various amino alcohols were applied for preparing cationic type water-borne polyurthane (PU) having ionic center onto flexible side chains. Average particle size, dispersion stability, viscosity, contact angle, surface energy, glass transition temperature ($T_g$), and adhesion strength of prepared water-borne PUs were measured and analyzed with different NCO/OH mol ratios, ionomers, and neutralizing agents. It was characterized that the prepared PU has a smaller particle size and a better dispersion stability than the conventional cationic water-borne PU containing ionic centers onto main chains.
High-resolution simulations using vortex methods have been performed for simulating unsteady viscous flows around an impulsively started square cylinder. In order to investigate the phenomenon from laminar to transition flow, simulations are performed for Reynolds numbers 25, 50, 150 and 250. At extremely low Reynolds number, flow around a square cylinder is known to separate at the trailing edges rather than the leading edges. With an increase of Reynolds number, the flow separation at the leading edges will be developed. The main flow characteristics of developing recirculation region and separations from leading and trailing edges are studied with the unsteady behavior of the wake after the cylinder starts impulsively. A notable change in the flow evolution is found at Re=150, that is, it is shown that the flow separations begin at both leading and trailing edges of the square cylinder. On the other hand, when Re=250, the strong secondary vorticity from the rear surfaces of the square cylinder increases the drag coefficient as the primary vortex layer is pushed outwards. The comparisons between results of the present study and experimental data show a good consistency.
The P/M processing of titanium aluminide using amorphous TiAl is developed by which it is possible to overcome inherent fabricability problems and to obtain a fine microstructure. A high quality amorphous TiAl powder produced by reaction ball milling shows clear glass transition far below a temperature at the onset of crystallization in differential scanning calorimetry above a heating rate of 0.05 K/s. We obtained a fully dense compact of amorphous TiAl powders, encapsulated in a vacuumed can, via viscous flow by hot isostatic pressing (HIP). Isothermally annealing of HIP'ed amorphous compact under a pressure of 196 MPa shows a progressive growth of ${\gamma}-TiAl$ phase with ${\alpha}2$ ($Ti_3Al$), which is characterized by increasing sharpness of X-ray peaks with temperature. Fully dense HIP'ed compact of titanium aluminide TiAl shows a high hardness of 505 Hv, suggesting strengthening mechanisms by sub-micron sized grain of ${\gamma}-TiAl$ and particle-dispersion by second phase constituent, ${\alpha}2$.
We prepared thermally robust fully crosslinked poly(methyl methacrylate-co-divinyl benzene) [poly(MMA-co-DVB)]microspheres successfully by precipitation polymerization in the absence of a stabilizing agent. The DVB concentration plays a pivotal role not only in the formation of the individually stable microspheres but also in the polymerization characteristics, including the particle size, the uniformity of size, the polymerization yield, and the thermal properties. The number-average diameter of the microspheres increased linearly, from 0.72 to 2.15 $\mu\textrm{m}$, and the particle size distribution became narrower, by elevating the uniformity from 1.35 to 1.12, as the DVB concentration increased from 20 to 75 mol%. In addition, the yield of the polymerization increased, from 73.4 to 98.6%, as the DVB concentration increased. Since the prepared particles possess fully crosslinked microstructures, no glass transition temperatures were observed, but all the samples prepared with DVB concentrations ranging from 20 to 75 mol% possess enhanced thermal properties. Based on the DSC and TGA data, the thermal stability of the mesospheres prepared by the precipitation polymerization is significantly improved as a result of crosslinking with DVB.
The effect of size and volume fraction of ceramic particles, with sliding velocity on the wear properties were investigated for the metal matrix composites fabricated by the pressureless infiltration process. The metal matrix composites exhibited about 5.5 - 6 times the wear resistance compared with AC8A alloy at high sliding velocity, and by increasing the particle size and decreasing the volume fraction, the wear resistance was improved. The wear resistance of metal matrix composites and AC8A alloy exhibited different aspects. Wear loss of AC8A alloy increased with sliding velocity, linearly : whereas, metal matrix composites indicated more wear loss than AC8A alloy at the slow velocity region. However, a transition point of wear loss was found at the middle velocity region, which shows the minimum wear loss. Further, wear loss at the high velocity region exhibited nearly the same value as the slow velocity region. In terms of wear mechanism, the metal matrix composites generally exhibited abrasive wear at slow to high sliding velocity; however, AC8A alloy showed abrasive wear at low sliding velocity and adhesive and melt wear at high sliding velocity.

Waterborne polyurethane(PU) microgel dispersions were synthesized with different mole ratio of polytetramethylene glycol(PTMG) to dimethylol propionic acid(DMPA). Particle size distribution, thermal and mechanical properties of the PU microgels were investigated. Particle size of the microgels was distributed in the range of $98{\sim}$680{\mu}m$ and decreased with increasing the mole ratio of DMPA and 1,2,6-hexanetriol. Glass transition temperature and melting temperature of the microgels were in the range of $-79.7 {\sim}-78.1^{\circ}C$, $22{\sim}24^{\circ}C$ respectively. Tensile strength and elongation of the PU microgel films were maximum in the case of 60/40 mole ratio of PTMG/DMPA.
Aluminum nitride (AlN) powders were synthesized by using a mixture of an aluminum nitrate or sulfate salt and carbon (mole ratio of $Al^{3+}$ to carbon=L : 30). The AlN was obtained by calcining the mixture under a flow of nitrogen in the temperature range 1100-1$600^{\circ}C$ and then burning out the residual carbon. The process of conversion of the salt to AlN was monitored by XRD and $^{27}$ Al magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy. The salt decomposed to ${\gamma}$-alumina and then converted to AlN without phase transition from ${\gamma}$-to-$\alpha$-alumina. $^{27}$ Al MAS NMR spectroscopy shows that the formation of AlN commenced at 110$0^{\circ}C$. AlN powders obtained from the sulfate salt were superior to those from the nitrate salt in terms of homogeneity and crystallinity. A very small amount of AlN whiskers was obtained by calcining a mixture of an aluminum sulfate salt and carbon at 115$0^{\circ}C$ for 40 h, and the growth of the whiskers is well explained by the particle-to-particle self-assembly mechanism.
The precipitate of FeCl2.4H2O and NaOH, Fe(OH)2 was rapidly made to oxidize by H2O2 to prepare $\delta$-FeOOH. The particle size, surface and morphology of $\delta$-FeOOH, and the shape and structure of thermally decomposed $\delta$-FeOOH were investigated by the use of high resolution STEM. $\delta$-FeOOH prepared under the condition of reaction temperature of Fe(OH)2 at 4$0^{\circ}C$, [OH-][Fe2+]=5 and aging time of 2 hr Fe(OH)2, had 630$\AA$ mean particle size, 4~5 aspect ratio, 20.8 emu/g saturation magnetization and 210 Oe coercivity. The edges of $\delta$-FeOOH were inclined to (001) about 41$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$ and coincident with (102), (101) respectively. When $\delta$-FeOOH was thermally decomposed at 25$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in vacuo, which had micropores of 0.9 nm thickness and crystallites of 2.4 nm thickness. (001)hex, [10]hex. of $\delta$-FeOOH parallel with (001)hex, [100]hex. of $\alpha$-Fe2O3 respectively. This showed three dimensional topotaxial structure transition, which was investigated by SADP (Selected Area Diffraction Pattern) of STEM.
