To realistically produce fluids such as smoke for the visual effects in the films or animations, we need two main processes: a physics-based modeling of smoke and a rendering of smoke simulation data, based on light transport theory. In the computer graphics community, the physics-based fluids simulation is generally adopted for smoke modeling. Recently, the interest of the particle-based Lagrangian simulation methods is increasing due to the advantages at simulation time, instead of the grid-based Eulerian simulation methods which was widely used. As a result, because the smoke rendering technique depends heavily on the modeling method, the research for rendering of the particle-based smoke data still remains challenging while the research for rendering of the grid-based smoke data is actively in progress. This paper focuses on realistic rendering technique for the smoke particles produced by Lagrangian simulation method. This paper introduces a technique which is called particle map, that is the expansion and modification of photon mapping technique for the particle data. And then, this paper suggests the novel particle map technique and shows the differences and improvements, compared to previous work. In addition, this paper presents irradiance map technique which is the pre-calculation of the multiple scattering term in the volume rendering equation to enhance efficiency at rendering time.
The turbulent flow around a sphere was investigated in a streamwise meridian plane using two experimental techniques: smoke-wire flow visualization in wind tunnel at Re=5,300 and PIV measurements in a circulating water channel at Re=7,400. The smoke-wire visualization shows flow separation points near an azimuthal angle of $90^{\circ}$, recirculating flow, transition from laminar to turbulent shear layer, evolving vortex roll-up and fully turbulent eddies in the sphere wake. In addition, the mean flow pattern extracted by particle tracing method in water tunnel at Re= 14,500 reveals two distinct comparable toroidal(not closed) vortices in the recirculation region. The mean velocity field measured using a PIV technique demonstrates the detailed wake configuration of close symmetric recirculation and near-wake configuration with two toroidal vortices, reversed velocity zone and vorticity contours.
This study was conducted for obtaining the optimized data to build the mixer or micro fluid device as measuring the three dimensions flow field in micro mixer. To acquire the rapid diffusion on the region of low Reynolds (Re < 100), the staggered herringbone mixer using chaotic advection was selected in this case. At first, by conducting the numerical analytical virtual experiment using CFD-ACE+, three dimensions flow field in the micro mixer was estimated As this flow field was proven using defocusing particle tracing method, the behavior of micro flow with three dimensional aspects could be analyzed. Numerical analysis and flow pattern in the micro mixer by experimental verification made to be able to analyze the chaotic advection. These can be important sources for building more optimized form. Verifying the information of three dimensional flow structure, these information can be used as the data for developing and improving the $\mu$ -TAS.
Some interesting corona characteristics of a airgap of penpoint-to-plate with a tracing insulator paper has been investigated in a temperature and humidity controlled metal chamber. It is found that the positive and the negative carriers in the plasma region could be understood from the waterdrop traces on the paper, which indicate the bombardment by the one of electron or positive gas particle from the plasma region of near the point. It is also found that a corona discharge could be used as a means of a humidifying, since the discharge makes dispersion of watersprays from the penpoint. And the negative corona was more effective for waterspray dispersion than the positive ones.

Wake structures behind two circular cylinders with different groove configurations(U and V-shape) have been investigated experimentally. The results were compared with those for the smooth cylinder having the same diameter D. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles of wake behind the cylinders were measured with varying the Reynolds number in the range of Re(sub)D=8,000∼14,000. As a result, the U-shaped groove was found to reduce the drag up to 18.6%, but the V-shaped groove reduced drag force only 2.5% compared with the smooth cylinder. As the Reynolds number increases, the vortex shedding frequency becomes a little larger than that of the smooth cylinder. The visualized flow using the smoke-wire and particle tracing methods shows the flow structure qualitatively.
The ignition of aluminum particles under high pressure and temperature conditions is studied. The laser ablation method is used to generate aluminum particles exposed to pressures ranging between 0.35 and 2.2 GPa. A continuous wave $CO_2$ laser is then used to heat surface of the aluminum target until ignition is achieved. We confirm ignition by a spectroscopic analysis of AlO vibronic band of 484 nm wavelength. The radiant temperature is measured with respect to various pressures for tracing of required heating energy for ignition. Then the ignition temperature is deduced from the radiant temperature using the thermal diffusion equation. The established ignition criteria for corresponding temperature and pressure can be used in the modeling of detonation behavior of heavily aluminized high explosives or solid propellants.
Effects of gas injection scheme and rf driving current configuration in a dual turn inductively coupled plasma (ICP) system were analyzed by 3D numerical simulation using CFD-ACE+. Injected gases from a tunable gas nozzle system (TGN) having 12 horizontal and 12 vertical nozzles showed different paths to the pumping surface. The maximum velocity from the nozzle reached Mach 2.2 with 2.2 Pa of Ar. More than half of the injected gases from the right side of the TGN were found to go to the pump without touching the wafer surface by massless particle tracing method. Gases from the vertical nozzle with 45 degree slanted angle soared up to the hottest region beneath the ceramic lid between the inner and the outer rf turn of the antenna. Under reversed driving current configuration, the highest rf power absorption region were separated into the two inner islands and the four peaked donut region.
With an attempt to suppress the moiré phenomenon caused by the interference between the black matrix of a display panel and the metal grid of a camera, we have fabricated an anti-moiré filter using light diffusing particles (LDPs) with the average diameter of 20 ㎛. It is demonstrated that the anti-moiré filter coated on a glass substrate (370 mm × 470 mm) using a table slot-die coater reduces the moiré intensity to a great extent when the area covered by LDPs is 50%. To quantify the intensity of moiré phenomenon, we have measured the lightness ratio and found that it is reduced from 132.12 down to 105.71 by the filter. To find the optimum area covered by LDPs, we have performed ray tracing simulations using Mie scatters as a substitute for LDPs. From the simulated irradiation distribution, we have calculated the standard deviation (SD) and contrast ratio (CR) to evaluate the moiré strength. As expected, the SD and CR values decrease with increasing covered area by LDPs. However, there exists a trade-off between the transmittance of the filter and its capability of reducing the moiré intensity in determining the area covered by LDPs.
The circulations and movement of suspended materials by tidal residual current and seasonal surface wind in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea are investigated by using a 2-dimensional barotropic model and a particle tracing technique. The tidal residual current is relatively strong around the south and west coast of Korea including the Cheju Island and southern coast of China. The current has a maximum speed of 10 cm/s in the vicinity of Cheju Island with a clockwise circulation. General tendency of the current, however, is to flow eastward along the southern coast of Korea. At the east coast of China from Shanghai to Tunghai, it also shows a eastward flow toward the South Sea of Korea. The anticyclonic circulation formed by wind-driven current and southward current prevails along the coast of Korea in the winter season(from October to April) when northerly wind is dominant. In summer(represented by July), however, the cyclonic circulation appears due to the influence of southerly wind. Suspended materials are advected by tidal residual current and wind-driven current. The long period(ten days) displacement by wind-driven current is bigger than that by tidal residual current. However, the tidal residual current would have the more important role for the advection of the suspended material considering longer period more than several months.

The objective of the present study is to visualize the steady and pulsatile flow fields in a branching model by using a high-resolution PIV system. A bifurcated flow system was built for the experiments in the steady and pulsatile flows. Harvard pulsatile pump was used to generate the pulsatile velocity waveforms. Conifer powder as the tracing particles was added to water to visualize the flow fields. CCD cameras($1K{\times}1K$(high resolution camera) and $640{\times}480$(low resolution camera)) captured two consecutive particle images at once for the image processing of several cross sections on the flow system. The range validation method and the area interpolation method were used to obtain the final velocity vectors with high accuracy. The results of the image processing clearly showed the recirculation zones and the formation of the paired secondary flows from the distal to the apex of the branch flow in the bifurcated model. The results also indicated that the particle velocities at the inner wall moved faster than the velocities at the outer wall due to the inertial force effects and the helical motions generated in the branch flows as the flow proceeded toward the outer wall. Even though the PIV images from the high resolution camera were closer to the simulation results than the images from the low resolution camera at some locations, both results of the PIV experiments from the two cameras generally agreed quite well with the results from the computer simulations. Therefore, instead of using the expensive stereoscopic PIV or 3D PIV system, the three-dimensional flow fields in a bifurcated model could be easily and exactly investigated by this study.
