  • This study analysed error of measurement and reproducibility for particle size analysis by the laser diffraction spectrometer. Laser diffraction spectrometers has become a very important method of particle size analysis. This measuring method has the advantage of simple operation, good reproducibility and rapid analysis. A feeding and dispersing system have been developed, which allows mass throughputs between 0.1~23 g/min in flowing air and 1.4~35% in flowing liquid. It has been used as a feeder unit for wet and dry particle size analysis from diffraction patterns. Relevant parameters, such as particle shape, particle size, dispersion, flow rate, concentration were analysed for measuring error. And system parameters of instruments for measurement of dynamic processes, eg, measuring time, focal plane, injection pressure drop and dispersion effect by the ultrasonic and mixing of preliminary treatment, were also discussed.

  • In this study, first the ADU gel particle, an intermediate for final $UO_2$ kernel of a HTGR nuclear fuel, was prepared from sol-gel method using the broth solution which was made by mixing of the uranyl nitrate, poly vinyl alcohol and tetra-hydrofurfuryl alcohol. The prepared dried-ADU gel particles were converted to the $UO_2\;via\;UO_3$ from thermal treatment with the 4% $H_2$ atmosphere. The sizes of the spherical liquid droplets appeared $1900{\sim}2100{\mu}m$, and the harmony between the flow rate of the broth solution and the frequency and the amplitude of a vibrating system are important factors for the spherical ADU gel particles via the mono size spherical droplets. From the XRD and FT-IR analyses, the prepared ADU gel particles were judged to be a $UO_3{\cdot}xNH_3{\cdot}yH_2O$ form, and the most important factor during the thermal treatment of the dried-ADU gel particle must be avoided a rapidly heating rate in the range of $180{\sim}400^{\circ}C$, and the heating rate should be kept below $5^{\circ}C/min$.

  • APhotocatalysis process uses ambient oxygen from air and irradiation, fundamentally UV light, to generate oxidation and reduction which can degrade almost all harmful organic and inorganic compounds to nontoxic substances. This study was focused on enhancement of photocatalytic activity which improves the photocatlytic efficiency with $TiO_2$ particle by mixing of certain amounts of Zn particles. We analyzed degradation of organic pollutant materials such as toluene and phenol with the mixed photocatalysis by using UV-visible spectrophotometer and obtained a result that photocatalytic activity is increased with increasing amount of Zn particle. Especially, in the case of $TiO_2$ (1 mmol) and Zn (0.1 mmol) mixture photocatalyst, we obtained at least 2 times higher photocatalytic activity compared with the commercially available $TiO_2$ photocatalyst (Degussa P-25), indicating that our mixed photocatalyts (Zn-doped $TiO_2$) is very effective of removing both organic dye and pollutants and the conversion rate of toluene is much faster than that of phenol.

  • In order to enhance the Au Ag leach rate, a mechanochemical activation process and a mixed thiourea-thiocyanate solution has been applied to Au concentrate. To achieve mechanochemical activation, the Au concentrate was mechanically ground using a dry and a wet process. The results of a particle size distribution analysis and an XRD analysis, average particle size and crystallite size were much smaller in the dry-sample than in the concentrate sample. As well the size was smaller in the wet-sample than in the dry-sample. In SEM and XRD analysis, the amorphization effect was observed in the wet-sample due to mechanochemical activation. Au Ag leaching experiments were carried out with a thiourea solution, a thiocyanate solution and a mixed thiourea-thiocyanate solution. The Au Ag leach rate was much greater in the dry-ground-sample than in the concentrate sample, and the leach rate was greater in the wet-ground-sample than in the dry-sample. The Au Ag leach rate was much greater in the thiocyanate solution than in the thiourea solution, and the leaching rate was much greater in the mixed thiourea-thiocyanate solution than in the thiocyanate solution. Up to a 99% leach rate for Au Ag were only achieved in the wet-sample using the mixed thiourea-thiocyanate leaching solution.

  • In this paper, it was evaluated that the effect of self-healing microcapsules on the quality and healing properties of cement composites. In the mixing of microcapsules, the plastic viscosity and yield stress of the cement composites decreased due to the particle properties of the microcapsules, and decreased in proportion to the mixing ratio. The table flow showed a tendency to decrease as the core material acted as a stimulant due to the loss of microcapsules, and the compressive strength could be supplemented through unit quantity correction. As a result of evaluating the effect of microcapsule mixing on the healing properties of cement composites, it was found that the unit water flow rate decreased by the healing reaction immediately after crack initiation. When more than 3% of microcapsules were mixed, it was found that there was a healing rate of more than 95% at 7 days of healing age.

  • Titanium carbide was synthesized by reacting the prepared titanium powder and carbon black using SHS method sustains the reaction spontaneously, utilizing heat generated by the exothermic reaction itself. In this process, the effect of the particle size of titanium powder on combustion temperature and combustion wave velocity was investigated. By controlling combustion temperature and combustion wave velocity via mixing Ti and C powder with TiC, the reaction kinetics of TiC formation by SHS method was considered. Without reference to the change of combustion temperature and combustion wave velocity, TiC was easily synthesized by combustion reaction. As the particle size of titanium powder was bigger, or, as the amount of added diluent(TiC) increased, combustion temperature and combustion wave velocity were found to be decreased. The formation of TiC by combustion reaction in the Ti-C system seems to occur via two different mechanisms. At the beginning of the reaction, when the combustion temperatures were higher than 2551 K, the reaction was considered to be controlled by the rate of dissolution of carbon into a titanium melt with an apparent activation energy of 148 kJ/mol. For combustion temperatures less than 2551 K, it was considered to be controlled by the atomic diffusion rate of carbon through a TiC layer with an apparent activation energy of 355 kJ/mol. The average particle size of the synthesized titanium carbide was smaller than that of the starting material(Ti).

  • This study evaluated the feasibility of combined use of physical separation and soil washing to remediate heavy metals (Pb and Cu) contaminated soil in a military shooting range. The soils were classified into two types based on the level of heavy metal concentrations: a higher contaminated soil (HCS) with Pb and Cu concentrations of 6,243 mg/kg and 407 mg/kg, respectively, and a lower contaminated soil (LCS) with their concentrations of 1,658 mg/kg and 232 mg/kg. Pb level in both soils exceeded the regulatory limit (700 mg/kg), and its concentration generally increased with decreasing soil particle size. However, in some cases, Pb concentrations increased with increasing soil particle size, presumably due to the presence of residues of bullets in the soil matrix. As a pretreatment step, a shaking table was used for physical separation of soil to remove bullet residues while fractionating the contaminated soils into different sizes. The most effective separation and fractionation were achieved at vibration velocity of 296 rpm/min, the table slope of 7.0°, and the separating water flow rate of 23 L/min. The efficiency of ensuing soil washing process for LCS was maximized by using 0.5% HCl with the soil:washing solution mixing ratio of 1:3 for 1 hr treatment. On the contrary, HCS was most effectively remediated by using 1.0% HCl with the same soil:solution mixing ratio for 3 hr. This work demonstrated that the combined use of physical separation and soil washing could be a viable option to remediate soils highly contaminated with heavy metals.

  • We made suspension of fumed silica in polyethylene glycol (PEG), studied rheological behavior as functions of contents of silica, dispersion condition, PEG molecular weight, temperature and contents of humidity. Rheological behavior of suspension was determined critical shear rate and rise of viscosity using rheometer AR2000. Suspension were PEGs of molecular weight 200, 400, and 600. Fumed silica suspensions of which silica contents are 5, 7, 9, 13, and 18% were prepared by normal mixing, homogenization and bead milling process. We observed their rheological behaviors at 10, 20, 30, and $40^{\circ}C$. As the PEG molecular weight and contents of silica increase, the critical shear rate was lowered. As the temperature increased, the critical shear rate was increased. Humidity contents of dispersion don't influence on the critical shear rate, but dispersion processes greatly affect the critical shear rate. The critical shear rate of suspensions prepared by the mixing process was the lowest, and that of suspensions prepared by the bead milling process was the highest. The rise in the shear viscosity of suspensions prepared by the mixing process is higher than that of suspensions prepared by the bead milling process. This was dependent on the dispersion condition of silica particle by dispersion process.

  • A low pressure DC plasma jet has been used to obtain diamond films from a mixture of $CH_4$ and $H_2$ with high deposition rate (>1$\mu\textrm{m}$/min). The effects of the deposition conditions such as torch geometry, substrate temperature, gas mixing ratio, chamber pressure, axial magnetic field on the diamond film properties such as morphology, purity, uniformity of the film and deposition rate, etc. have been examined with the aid of Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, and Raman Spectroscopy. Both the growth rate and particle size increased rapidly for low methane concentrations but saturated and the morphology changed from octahedral to cubic structure when the concentration exceeded 1.0 %. Higher growth rates (>1.5${\mu}m$/min) can be obtained by applying an axial magnetic field to the DC plasma jet. Diamond obtained from the magnetized plasma jet also shows a sharp peak at 1332.5$cm^{-1}$ in the Raman Spectra and this result implies that higher growth rate with a good quality diamond films can he obtained by applying an external magnetic field to the plasma jet.
