We have constructed a 3-dim hydrodynamics code called BTSPH. The fluid dynamics part of the code is based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), and for its Poisson solver the binary tree (BT) scheme is employed. We let the smoothing length in the SPH algorithm vary with space and time, so that resolution of the calculation is considerably enhanced over the version of SPH with fixed smoothing length. The binary tree scheme calculates the gravitational force at a point by collecting the monopole forces from neighboring particles and the multipole forces from aggregates of distant particles. The BTSPH is free from geometric constraints, does not rely on grids, and needs arrays of moderate size. With the code we have run the following set of test calculations: one-dim shock tube, adiabatic collapse of an isothermal cloud, small oscillation of an equilibrium polytrope of index 3/2, and tidal encounter of the polytrope and a point mass perturber. Results of the tests confirmed the code performance.
Hematite particles were obtained by hydrothermal reaction of ferric hydroxide in the presence of small amount of citric acid which is acted as crystal growth controller. The effects of hydrothermal reaction condition son the morphology and crystal structure of powder were investigated using X-ray, TEM and FT-IR. Ellipsoidal or rectangular hematite particles were formed in the range of pH 10.75~11.75 as initial basicity of reactants and 3$\times$10-5 ~9$\times$10-5 mol as citric acid content. Crystallization of hematite was inhibited in the range of pH9. 0~10.5 and above citric acid content of $1.5\times$10-4 mol. Hematite particle length and aspect ratio were decreased gradually with increasing of citric acid content. Hematite particles formed at 14$0^{\circ}C$ exhibited particle properties with the length of 0.7 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and aspect ratio of 8. Hematite particles having a good acicular-type were not obtained above 22$0^{\circ}C$.

The present study has proposed a novel aerosol CVD utilizing an internal jet in the conventional MCVD reactor for the purpose of enhancing the deposition efficiency(and rate) and the uniformity of deposited film. The use of impingement of high temperature jet through a thin inner tube ensures the reduction of non-uniform particle deposition zone as well as higher thermophoretic particle deposition. It is shown that significant improvements have been achieved for both aspects of deposition efficiency and uniformity. As jet temperatures increase, the tapered length is reduced and deposition efficiency is significantly increased.

Recently, according to increase in the requirement of electric power, a thermoelectric power plant equipped with pulverized coal combustion system is highly valued, because coal has abundant deposits and a low price compared with others. For efficient use of coal fuel, most of plant makers are studying to improve combustion performance and flame stability, and reduce pollutants emission. One of these studies is how to control the profile of particle injection and velocity dependant on coal nozzle configuration. Basically, nozzle which has mixed flow of gas and particle is required to have the balanced coal concentration at exit, but it is very difficult to obtain that by itself without help of other device. In this study, coal distribution and pressure drop in gas-solid flow are calculated by numerical method in nozzle with various shapes of venturi diffuser as a means to get even coal particle distribution. The tentative correlations of pressure drop and exit coal distribution are deduced as function of the height, length and reducing angle of venturi from the calculated results. When coal hurner nozzle is designed, these equations are very useful to optimize the shape of venturi which minimize uneven particle distribution and pressure drop within coal nozzle.
In order to provide fundamental information for developing reaction model in the practical blended coal power plants, effects of particle size and blending ratio on combustion characteristics and thermal reaction in co-firing with bituminous and sub-bituminous coals were experimentally investigated using a TGA and a laboratory-scale burner. Characteristic parameters including ignition, burnout temperature and activation energy were determined from TG and DTG combustion profiles. Distributions of flame length and mean particle temperature were investigated from the visualization of flames in slit-burner system. As coal particle size decreased and volatile matter content increased, characteristic temperatures and activation energy decreased. The ignition/burnout characteristics and activation energy are linearly influenced by a variation in particle size and blending ratio. These results indicated that the control of the coal blending ratio can improve the combustion efficiency for sub-bituminous coals and the ignition characteristics for bituminous coals.
This study reports the analysis of the pressure drop characteristics for the air-particle flow in powder transport piping system. The pressure drop characteristics of air-particle flow in piping system is not well understood due to the complexity of particles motion mechanism. Particles or powders suspended in air flow cause the increase of the pressure drop and affect directly the transportation efficiency. In this study, the pressure drop in powder transport piping system with straight and curved pipes is analyzed for the interactions of air flow and particle motion. The total pressure drop increases with increasing of the pipe length, the mixture ratio, and the friction factor of particles due to the increasing friction loss by air and particles in a coal piping system. For the coal powders of $74{\mu}m$ size and powder-to-air mass mixture ratio of 0.667, the total pressure drop by the consideration of powders and air flow is $30\%$ higher than that of air flow only.
Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a Lagrangian computational fluid dynamics method that has been widely used in the analysis of physical phenomena characterized by large deformation or multi-phase flow analysis, including free surface. Despite the recent implementation of eddy-viscosity models in SPH methodology, sophisticated turbulent analysis using Lagrangian methodology has been limited due to the lack of computational performance and numerical consistency. In this study, we implement the standard and dynamic Smagorinsky model and dynamic Vreman model as sub-particle scale models based on a weakly compressible SPH solver. The large eddy simulation method is numerically identical to the spatial discretization method of smoothed particle dynamics, enabling the intuitive implementation of the turbulence model. Furthermore, there is no additional filtering process required for physical variables since the sub-grid scale filtering is inherently processed in the kernel interpolation. We simulate lid-driven flow under transition and turbulent conditions as a benchmark. The simulation results show that the dynamic Vreman model produces consistent results with experimental and numerical research regarding Reynolds averaged physical quantities and flow structure. Spectral analysis also confirms that it is possible to analyze turbulent eddies with a smaller length scale using the dynamic Vreman model with the same particle size.
We have studied the generation, growth and behavior of chemical species and particles in silane PCVD. We included the plasma chemistry of silane, particle nucleation by homogeneous formation, acrosol dynamics and transport phenomena of chemical species and particles. The concentration profile of chemical species and particles were shown as a function of reactor length. The effects of process variables such as reactor pressure, total gas flow rate and electrical field strength on the behavior of chemical species and particles were analyzed.

Chord length sampling method in Monte Carlo simulations is a method used to model spherical particles with random sampling technique in a stochastic media. It has received attention due to the high calculation efficiency as well as user convenience; however, a technical issue regarding boundary effect has been noted. In this study, after analyzing the distribution characteristics of spherical particles using an explicit method, an alternative chord length sampling method is proposed. In addition, for modeling in finite media, a correction method of the boundary effect is proposed. Using the proposed method, sample probability distributions and relative errors were estimated and compared with those calculated by the explicit method. The results show that the reconstruction ability and modeling accuracy of the particle probability distribution with the proposed method were considerably high. Also, from the local packing fraction results, the proposed method can successfully solve the boundary effect problem. It is expected that the proposed method can contribute to the increasing of the modeling accuracy in stochastic media.

Particle image velocimetry(PIV), a planar measuring technique, is an efficient tool for studying the complicated flow field such as in-cylinder flow, and intake port flow. PIV can be also used for analyzing the integral length scale of turbulence, which is a measure of the size of the large eddies that contain most of the turbulence kinetic energy. In this study, dual color scanning PIV was designed and demonstrated by using a rotating mirror and a beam splitter. This PIV system allowed enlargement of flexibility in the intensity of vectors to be calculated by spatial filtering technique, even in combustion chamber with high velocity gradient and high vorticity$({\sim}1000s^{-1})$. A new color image processing algorithm was developed, which was used to find the direction of particle movement directly from the digital image. These measuring techniques were successfully applied to obtaining the turbulence intensity (~0.1m/s) and the turbulent integral length scale of vorticity(~1mm).
