  • A lot study of convection heat transfer on internal flow has been extensively conducted in the past decades using of high specific surface area, increasing heat transfer coefficient, swirling flow and improving the transport properties. This study concerned with the application of a tangential slot swirl generator for improving heat transfer in a horizontal circular copper tube. The Al particles(about $100{\sim}130{\mu}m$) was employed for this experimental work. 3D PIV(particle image velocimetry) technique has employed to measure velocity profiles of Al particles with and without swirl flow. The copper tube is heated uniformly by winding of a heating coil for heat transfer work, having a resistance of 9 ohm per meter. Experiments are performed in the Reynolds number range of 6,800~12,100 with swirl and without swirl using Al particles. Experimental data for comparison of Nusselt number is presented that of with swirl and without swirl along the test tube for the Reynolds numbers. The Nusselt number is improved with increasing of Reynolds numbers or swirl intensities along the test tube. The Nusselt number with swirl flow is about 60.0% to 119.0% higher than that obtained by the Dittus-Boelter equation.

  • Flurbiprofen- and flurbiprofen axetil-loaded microemulsions composed of soybean oil, poloxamer 407, glycerine and water were prepared by generator-type homgenizer and ultrasoni c probe system. The particle size of microemulsions was measured by the dynamic light scattering method. The pharmacokinetics and organ distribution of flurbiprofen were investigated after intravenous injection of flurbiprofen solution, flurbiprofen-loaded microemulsion and flurbiprofen axetil-loaded microemulsions equivalent to 10mg/kg of flurbiprofen to rats. Blood samples were collected from the anterior ciliary artery of rats for 24hr, and flurbiprofen in plasma and organs was analyzed by HPLC. Stable microemulsions were prepared. Even though there is a little change in droplet size just after the preparation, no creaming and no separation were occured during the storage period for 6 months at 4, 21, 37 and 45$^{\circ}C$. Pharmacokinetic parameters and organ distribution of flurbiprofen after intravenous injection of flurbiprofen- and flurbiprofen axetil-loaded microemulsions emulsified with poloxamer 407 were not significantly different from those of commercial lipid microemulsion emulsified with lecithin. Therefore, it is concluded that flurbiprofen- and flurbiprofen axetil-loaded microemulsion prepared with poloxamer 407 could be used as a parenteral formulation.

  • The process optimization of ozone concentration and half life time was investigated in ultra pure water and alkaline solutions for the wet cleaning of silicon wafer surface at room temperature. In the ultra pure water,. the maximum concentration (35 ppm) of ozone was measured at oxygen flow rate of 3 liters/min and ozone generator power over 60%. The half life time of ozone increased at lower power of ozone generator. Additive gases such as $N_2$ and $CO_2$ were added to increase the concentration and half life time of ozone. Although the maximum ozone concentration was higher with the addition of $N_2$ gas, a longer half life time was observed with the addition of $CO_2$. When $NH_4OH$ of 0.05 or 0.10 vol% was added in DI water, the pH of the solution was around 10. The addition of ozone resulted in the half life time less than 1 min. In order to maintain high pH and ozone concentration, ozone was continuously supplied in 0.05 vol% ammonia solutions. 3 ppm of ozone was dissolved in ammonia solutions. The static contact angle of silicon wafer surface became hydrophilic. The particle removal was possible alkaline ozone solutions. The organic contamination can be removed by ozonated ultra pure water and then alkaline solution containing ozone can remove the particles on silicon surface at room temperature.

  • A two-stage slit type virtual impactor based on the concept of the single stage virtual impactor has been designed, fabricated, and evaluated for the purpose of concentrating the suspended particles in the air with the size range of 1.8-4.5 .mu.m and handling large flow volume. Monodisperse methylene blue particles have been generated with vibrating orifice aerosol generator (VOAG). The separation efficiency and concentration efficiency have been measured by the UV-visible absorption spectrometry. Previous study for a single stage virtual impactor were used to determine the design parameters such as 50% cut-off sizes and dimensions of the two stage virtual impactor. The separation efficiency curve and 50% cut-off Stokes number(cut-off sizes) are not sensitive to the nozzle Reynolds number, but sensitive to the ratio between the minor flow rate and the total flow rate, The measured concentration efficiency was compared with the maximum concentration efficiency determined by the separation efficiencies of the first and the second stages. The differences between the measured and the maximum concentration efficiencies result from the wall loss due to the deposited particles on the internal walls inside the impactor.

  • The automobile equipped with a gasoline engine uses the ignition coil, namely, a high voltage generator, to make the mixed fuel ignited and burned in the combustion chamber, which results in the power to drive the engine. The ignition coil functions to convert a low voltage of the primary into a hiか voltage of the secondary by switching method, which will be transmitted to the electrode. Here, if the ignition coil has a defect even a little, it cannot function well. In this study, it was chosen epoxy molding ignition coil in recently and epoxy resin which is insulation material as specimens, and it was measured the characteristics of the partial discharge occurring to the specimens when those were applied to a voltage, and thereby, it was researched and analyzed the distribution of phase angle, amount and count of discharge due to the changing voltage, And as the result is applying to the actual automobile ignition system, it can be expected the enhancement of the performance of the ignition coil and the reliability of the electrical equipment.

  • Microbubbles moving in the turbulent boundary layer are visualized and investigated in the point of frictional drag reduction. The turbulent boundary layer is formed beneath the surface of the 2-D flat plate located in the tunnel test section. The microbubble generator produces mean bubble diameter of 30 – 50 μm. To capture the micro-bubbles passing through the tiny measurement area of 5.6 mm2 to 200 mm2, the shadowgraphy system is employed appropriately to illuminate bubbles. The velocity field of bubbles reveals that Reynolds stress is reduced in the boundary layer by microbubbles’ activity. To understand the contribution of microbubbles to the drag reduction rate more, much smaller field-of-view is required to visualize the bubble behaviors and to find the 2-D void fraction in the inner boundary layer.

  • In-situ capping is a method to stabilize contaminated sediments by isolation. Few researches on the in-situ capping have been performed, although the engineering approach is still required to prevent the release of contaminants. In this study, hydraulic model test were conducted by using a wave generator to observe the change of cap thickness which is important factor in design of capping. Sands with particle size between 0.075 to 2 mm as capping materials were used to observe the change of capping thickness by waves. The experimental results show that the surface of capping materials is similar to wave form. The more wave height increases, the more erosion of capping materials increases.

  • Solution plasma is a unique method which provides a direct discharge in solutions. It is one of the promising techniques for various applications including the synthesis of metallic/non-metallic nanomaterials, decomposition of organic compounds, and the removal of microorganism. In the context of nanomaterial syntheses, solution plasma has been utilized to produce carbon nanoparticles and metallic-carbon nanoparticle systems. The main purpose of this study was to synthesize nickel nanoparticles embedded in a matrix of carbon particles by solution plasma in one-step using waste vegetable oil as the carbon source. The experimental setup was done by simply connecting a bipolar pulsed power generator to nickel electrodes, which were submerged in the waste vegetable oil. Black powders of the nickel nanoparticles-embedded carbon (NiNPs/Carbon) particles were successfully obtained after discharging for 90 min. The morphology of the synthesized NiNPs/Carbon was investigated by a scanning electron microscope, which revealed a good dispersion of NiNPs in the carbon-particle matrix. The X-ray diffraction of NiNPs/Carbon clearly showed the co-existence of crystalline Ni nanostructures and amorphous carbon. The crystallite size of NiNPs (through the Ni (111) diffraction plane), as calculated by the Scherrer equation was found to be 64 nm. In addition, the catalytic activity of NiNPs/Carbon was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry in an acid solution. It was found that NiNPs/Carbon did not show a significant catalytic activity in the acid solution. Although this work might not be helpful in enhancing the activity of the fuel cell catalysts, it is expected to find application in other processes such as the CO conversion (by oxidation) and cyclization of organic compounds.

  • Monodisperse microparticles has been particularly enabling for various applications in the encapsulation and delivery of pharmaceutical agents. The microfluidic devices are attractive candidates to produce highly uniform droplets that serve as templates to form monodisperse microparticles. The microfluidic devices that have micro-scale channel allow precise control of the balance between surface tension and viscous forces in two-phase flows. One of its essential abilities is to generate highly monodisperse droplets. In this paper, a microfluidic approach for preparing monodisperse polycaprolactone (PCL) microparticles is presented. The microfluidic devices that have a flow-focusing generator are manufactured by soft-lithography using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The crucial factors in the droplet generation are the controllability of size and monodispersity of the microdroplets. For this, the volumetric flow rates of the dispersed phase of oil solution and the continuous phase of water to generate monodisperse droplets are optimized. As a result, the optimal flow condition for droplet dripping region that is able to generate uniform droplet is found. Furthermore, the droplets containing PCL polymer by solvent evaporation after collection of droplet from device is solidified to generate the microparticle. The particle size can be controlled by tuning the flow rate and the size of the microchannel. The monodispersity of the PCL particles is measured by a coefficient of variation (CV) below 5%.
