Aerosol size and number concentration were observed in the atmospheric boundary layer over Beijing (from near the ground to 1,200 m) on March 15 (a clear day) and 16 (a dusty day), 2005. The results were further compared with lidar measurements in order to understand the dependency of extinction on the particle size distribution and their vertical changes. The boundary layer atmosphere was composed of several sub-layers, and a dry air layer appeared between 400 and 1,000 m under the influence of dust event. In this dry air layer, the concentration of the fine-mode particles (diameter smaller than $1.0\;{\mu}m$) was slightly lower than the value on the clear day, while the concentration of coarse-mode particles (diameter larger than $1.0\;{\mu}m$) was remarkably higher than that on the clear day. This situation was attributed to the inflow of an air mass containing large amounts of Asian dust particles and a smaller amount of fine-mode particles. The results strongly suggest that the fine-mode particles affect light extinction even in the dusty atmosphere. However, quantitatively the relation between extinction and particle concentration is not satisfied under the dusty atmospheric conditions since laser beam attenuates in the atmosphere with high concentration of particles. Laser beam attenuation effect becomes larger in the relation between extinction and coarse particle content comparing the relation between extinction and fine particle content. To clarify this problem technically, future in situ measurements such as balloon-borne lidar are suggested. Here extinction was measured at 532 nm wavelength. Measurements of extinction at other wavelengths are desired in the future.
In the current study, A model for the flow analysis of fresh and highly flowable concrete has been developed using a particle method, the moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method. The phenomena on the flow of concrete has been considered as a visco-plastic flow problem, and the basic governing equation of concrete particle dynamics has been based on the Navier-Stokes equation in Lagrangian form and the conservation of mass. In order to formulate a visco-plastic flow constitutive law of fresh concrete, concrete is modeled as a highly viscous material in the state of non-flow and as a visco-plastic material in the state of flow after reaching the yield stress of fresh concrete. A flow test of fresh concrete in the L-box was simulated and the predicted flow was well matched with the experimental result. The developed method was well showed the flow motion of concrete particles because it was formulated to be based on the motion of visco-plastic fluid dynamics.

To arrange artificial reefs for marine afforestation effectively, tidal currents were analyzed by numerical experiments, and particle tracking based on tidal currents was carried out to clarify the path of algae spores. The experiments were conducted by the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC), and water column was vertically divided into five layers. Tidal current patterns were showed to be affected by main currents outside of the study area, and two circle currents were observed during the analysis of residual currents. Particle tracking lasted 15 days at three installation places where artificial reefs for marine afforestation could be deployed. According to the results of the particle tracking experiment, particle movements at the No.1 and No. 3 stations were belt types along the coastal line. The No. 2 station documented an ellipse type movement 300~500m from coast line. These results suggest that artificial reefs for marine afforestation should be installed in the belt zones at of the No. 1 and No. 3 stations, and in the ellipse zone at the No. 2 station.
A homogeneous flow field including more than 2000 spherical particles was directly simulated. Particles are settling by gravity with the Reynolds number ranging from 50 to 300, based on diameter and slip velocity. Particular attention was focused on the distribution of particles. The Reynolds-number dependence, influences of particle rotation and loading ratio, and the dynamics of particle clusters are discussed. In the higher Reynolds number case, the wake attraction causes particle clusters and the average drag coefficient decreases significantly. Non-rotating particles maintain cluster structure and rotating ones moves randomly in the horizontal direction. It is because of the difference in the direction of the lift force.
A low temperature plasma process has been widely used for semiconductor fabrication and can also be applied for the preparation of solar cell, MEMS or NEMS, but they are notorious in the point of particle contamination. The nano-sized particles can be generated in the low temperature plasma process and they can induce several serious defects on the performance and quality of microelectronic devices and also on the cost of final products. For the preparation of high quality thin films of high efficiency by the low temperature plasma process, it is desirable to increase the deposition rate of thin films with reducing the particle contamination in the plasmas. In this paper, we introduced the studies on the generation and growth of nanoparticles in the low temperature plasmas and tried to introduce the recent interesting studies on nanoparticle generation in the plasma reactors.

Many problems in geotechnical engineering such as slop failure, debris flow, ground heaving due to embankment, and lateral flow caused by liquefaction are related to large deformation rather than small deformation. Traditional numerical methods such as finite element and finite difference methods have a difficulty to solve such large deformations because they use grids. A particle method was developed for fluid dynamics. The particle method can solve large deformation problems because it uses particles to discretize differential equations. It can also include soil constitutive model and thus solve soil behavior on various boundary conditions. In this study, a particle method, which is based on particles rather than grids, is introduced and used to simulate large deformation including soil failure. The developed method can be applied for various large deformation problems in geotechnical engineering because it incorporates soil constitutive models.

A simple model for describing the non-spherical particle growth phenomena has been developed. In this model, we solve simultaneously particle volume and surface area conservation sectional equations that consider particles' non-sphericity. From the correlation between two conserved properties of sections, we can predict the evolution of the aggregates' morphology. This model was compared with a simple monodisperse-assumed model and more rigorous two-dimensional sectional model. For comparison, formation and growth of silica particles have been simulated in a constant temperature reactor environment. This new model showed good agreement with the detailed two-dimensional sectional model in total number concentration and primary particle size. The present model successfully predicted particle size distribution and morphology without costing very heavy computation load and memory needed for the analysis of two dimensional aerosol dynamics.
In CO2 laser surface machining of plastic films in modern display manufacturing, scattering of fume particles could be a major source of well-recognized film surface contamination. This computational fluid dynamics research investigates the suction air flow patterns over a film surface as well as the dispersion of micron-sized fume particles with low-Reynolds number particle drag model. The numerical results show the recirculatory flow patterns near laser machining point on film surface and also over the surface of vertical suction slot, which may hinder the efficient removal of fume particles from film surface. The dispersion characteristics of fume particles with various particle size have been tested systematically under different levels of suction flow intensity. It is found that suction removal efficiency of fume particles heavily depends on the particle size in highly nonlinear manners and a higher degree of suction does not always results in more efficient particle removal.
We have investigated aluminum cluster deposition using a classical molecular dynamics simulations. We studied the variations of the cluster momentum and the impulse force during collisions, and found that the close-packed cluster impact has some of properties of the single particle collision and the linear atomic chain collisions. We also simulated the series of energetic cluster deposition with energy Per atom. When energy Per atom in cluster has some eV rather than very low, the intermixing occurred easily in growth film and we can obtain a good film without subsequent annealing process.

The flow characteristics of polluted air are analysed by comparing the results obtained from PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) experiment and CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) commercial code. In order to simulate the polluted air flow, the olive oil has been used as tracer particles with the kinematic viscosity of air, $1.51{\times}10^{-5}m^2/s$. The investigation has done in the range of Reynolds numbers of 870, 1730 and 2890 due to the inlet flow velocities of 0.3, 0.6, and 1.0 m/s, respectively. The average velocity and the pressure distributions are comparatively discussed with respect to the three different Reynolds numbers. The results show that the outlet flow rates at three different Reynolds numbers are equivalent of 165 to 167 percent of the inlet ones. The pressure drop occurs in the model closed at both end sides and the highest pressures at each Reynolds number are positioned at the top of the tunnel between the inlet and outlet.
