  • A laboratory scale fluidized bed reactor was developed to treat the combustion characteristics of some fuels (wood, paper sludge, refuse derived fuel). The aims were to introduce the means of experiment and interpretation of the results and finally determine the particle characteristics on the pyrolysis and combustion process of the fuel. A single particle combustion process in the fluidized bed was closely observed. Understanding experimental facility characteristics and determining parameters were also carried out. The fuel combustion processes were observed by carbon conversion rate, recovery and mean carbon conversion time. They were estimated with the CO, $CO_2$ gas concentration monitored at the exit of the combustor. Fuel drying and pyrolysis process were governed by temperature distribution in the fuel particle. There was a significant overlap of the drying and devolatilization. However, transition process from devolatilization to char combustion seemed to be determined by mechanical solidity of the fuel particle after devolatilization process.

  • Environmental factors affect parts of the automobile. When dust particles are embedded, specially, friction and wear of the rubber-seal in automobile chassis system are increased. Increase in friction and wear leads to weakness of component and reduction of mechanical life. In this study, the wear characteristics of rubber-seal for inflow of dust particles are investigated. Silica($SiO_2$) and alumina($Al_2O_3$) particles are used as a dust particle because these particles are main elements of dust particles. The sliding wear tester are used for investigate the wear characteristics of rubber-seal. If the single dust particle($SiO_2$) is embedded in the rubber-seal component, the influence of dust particle size is more than that of inflow rate on the wear characteristics of rubber-seal. If the mixed dust particles are embedded in the rubber-seal component, the wear rate is increased as the rate of alumina that has a bigger hardness is increased. If the mixed dust particles that have different hardness are embedded in the rubber-seal component, the influence of particle size is more than that of particle hardness.

  • Experimental research on characteristics of particle-laden jet by using a coaxial injector was conducted in order to design fuel and oxidizer injectors of the supercavitation underwater vehicle. $1{\mu}m$ and $42{\mu}m$ particles was simultaneously injected to obtain particle and fluid velocity. Small particles($1{\mu}m$) and large particles represent fluid and fuel characteristics respectively. Small particles, which was processed using PIV algorithms, and one for the large particles processed using PTV algorithms. Fluid phase axial velocity increases according to particle loading ratio increases, and particles are located at the outside of the high vorticity region in a mixing layer of a coaxial injector.

  • In this study, a fluidized bed particle generator was developed to generate an aerosol without supply of compressed air and to increase portability. It was assumed that the mixing ratio of the test particles and beads, the input amount, and the air flow rate supplied to the generator would have effect on the aerosol generation characteristics. The product of these three parameters was set as a characteristic parameter and particle generation characteristics according to the change of the characteristic parameter were observed. As a result, it was confirmed that the input amount of test particles and beads was not suitable as a characteristic parameter and a characteristic parameter expressed as a product of the mass mixing ratio and the air flowrate was newly defined. When the new characteristic parameter is applied, it can be confirmed that the total amount of particles generated from the particle generator is a function of the characteristic parameter. As a result of measuring the amount of particle generation by adjusting the characteristic parameter, it was confirmed that the performance required for the test particle generator for the field inspection equipment of PM-2.5 sensors could be satisfied.

  • Characteristics of the pressure drop in an expanded bed have been compared to those in a packed bed for numerical study of the interphase drag in gas-particle flows. A numerical analysis of the pressure drop by the particle drag has been conducted according to the tube-to-particle diameter ratios and Reynolds numbers for comparison. As the tube-to-particle diameter ratios increase at the same Reynolds number, the pressure drop tends to converge. It has been confirmed that characteristics of the pressure drop in the expanded bed are similar to those in the packed bed.

  • Combustion phenomena(characteristics) of organic solvents including various alcohols Immobilized on ceramic balls were studied. Experiments were performed by burning methyl, ethyl, and propyl alcohol immobilized on sands (particle size 0.35mm) and coramic balls(particle size 1~5mm) to measure mass burning rate, height burning rate and combustion temperature. The longer time from ignition to extinguishment was resualted from the larger particle size of ceramic balls and the smaller size of ceramic balls exhibited the higher mass burning rate. Of alcohols tested the relative magnitude of facilitation of combustion was methyl >ethyl >propyl. Combustion temperatare of alcohols, without regard to the types of alcohols, was not increased with smaller ceramic balls(up to 3mm of particle size). However, with larger ceramic balls, combustion temperatare of alcohols was increased by 40~5$0^{\circ}C$ and the highest combustion temperatare was obtained with sands(particle size 0.35mm). Also, second rising was occurred at the combustion time of I5-20min. and this second rising time was increased with the smaller particle. These results will be able to be used for petrochemical industries using particles to evaluate the danger of fire and explosion.

  • This paper is a review of the results of examining the flow characteristics of gas and particles with regards to pipe-type nozzle and converging nozzles depending on nozzle geometry. The nozzles used in this experiment are the pipe-type nozzle which can sufficiently mix the gas and particles, and the converging nozzle which can rapidly accelerate fluid . The particles used at the time of this experiment each measured 0.8, 30, 60 and 80${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in the diameter. The Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer was used to measure the velocity of each particle, and the Hot-wire probe was used to measure the spectrum in order to analyze the flow near the nozzle exit of the 0.8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ particle.

  • This present experimental study has dealt with the heat transfer characteristics of plastic particle slurry which flows in a circular tube. This type of slurry is suggested for heat transfer enhancement effect cause by random and vortex effect of plastic particle dispersed in water. As a result, the thermal boundary layer becomes thin so the heat transfer coefficient on the tube wall more increase compare to pure water flow. This experimental test section was composed with stainless pipe which has the length of 2000mm, inner pipe diameter of 14mm and outer pipe diameter of 60mm. The most effective and important parameter of this experiment is plastic packing factor(PPF). The focuses of these results are pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient. As results, the friction factor of plastic particle slurry becomes higher at laminar flow region than pure water because of buoyancy effect of plastic particle but the local heat transfer coefficient becomes higher.

  • Mono-disperse particles generated by a condensation particle generator are widely used to meet the experimental and industrial needs. The characteristics of particles generated by homogeneous nucleation have been studied experimentally using a laminar flow condensation particle generator. Dry nitrogen gas saturated with oleic acid vapor was cooled well below the saturation temperature causing the highly supersaturated vapor to nucleate. The dependence of GSD(Geometric Standard Deviation), GMD(Geometric Mean Diameter), and the mass concentration of particles on the temperature at the evaporator, flow rate and the temperature condition at condenser was studied. The experimental results show that the mass concentration of particles is affected by the radial temperature profile at condenser. Nucleation at the center of the condenser causes the mass concentration of particles to increase. The experimental results also show that the suppression of additional nucleation by a constant temperature condition at the condenser increases the mean diameter of particle.

  • The present study addresses an analytical investigation to understand the characteristics of gas flow in the High-Velocity Oxy-Fuel(HVOF) thermal spray gun. One-dimensional analysis is extended to involve the effects of the wall friction and powder particle diameter. From the present analysis it is well known that the flow characteristics inside and outside the thermal spray gun is varied depending on the combustion chamber pressure. The thermal spray gun flow is characterized by six different patterns. The powder particle size and wall friction significantly influence the powder particle velocity. The particle velocity decreases with an increase in the powder particle size. This implies that the combustion chamber pressure should be increased to achieve a higher velocity of the powder particle.
