The Lagrangian dispersion of fluid particles in inhomogeneous turbulence is investigated by a direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow. Four points Hermite interpolation in the homogeneous direction and Chebyshev polynomials in the inhomogeneous direction is adopted to simulate the fluid particle dispersion. An inhomogeneity of Lagrangian statistics in turbulent boundary layer is investigated by releasing many particles at several different wall-normal locations and tracking those particles. The fluid particle dispersions and Lagrangian structure functions of velocity are scaled by the Kolmogorov similarity. The auto-correlations of velocity and acceleration are shown at the different releasing locations. Effect of initial particle location on the dispersion is analyzed by the probability density function at the several downstreams and time instants.
We study the origin and acceleration mechanism of solar energetic particles (SEPs), which are one of the major causes of hazardous impacts in the space weather. By adopting the velocity dispersion to the multi-channel energy band observations from SOHO/ERNE and Wind/3DP, we estimate the onset time for each energy band and investigate coronal structure and CME's dynamics associated with the SEPs. Through this study we will find clues to answer the questions about the origin and acceleration of SEPs as well as their associated with flare and/or CMEs. We will apply our findings to improve the forecasting system of the solar radiation storms.
I present a simple scheme for the treatment of gravitational interactions on galactic scales. In anal- ogy with known mechanisms of quantum field theory, I assume ad hoc that gravitation is mediated by virtual exchange particles-gravitons-with very small but non-zero masses. The resulting den- sity and mass profiles are proportional to the mass of the gravitating body. The mass profile scales with the centripetal acceleration experienced by a test particle orbiting the central mass, but this comes at the cost of postulating a universal characteristic acceleration $a_0{\approx}4.3{\times}10^{-12}msec^{-2}$ (or $8{\pi}a_0{\approx}1.1{\times}10^{-10}msec^{-2}$). The scheme predicts the asymptotic flattening of galactic rotation curves, the Tully-Fisher/Faber-Jackson relations, the mass discrepancy-acceleration relation of galaxies, the surface brightness-acceleration relation of galaxies, the kinematics of galaxy clusters, and "Renzo's rule" correctly; additional (dark) mass components are not required. Given that it is based on various ad-hoc assumptions and given further limitations, the scheme I present is not yet a consistent theory of gravitation; rather, it is a "toy model" providing a convenient scaling law that simplifies the description of gravity on galactic scales.

Merger shocks with Ms < ~ 3 - 4 have been detected in galaxy clusters through radio observations of synchrotron radiations emitted from cosmic-ray (CR) electrons. The CR electrons are believed to be produced by the so-called diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at the merger shocks. To describe the acceleration of electrons, the injection into DSA has to be understood. Recent studies have showed that electrons could be energized through stochastic shock drift acceleration (SSDA), a mechanism mediated by multi-scale plasma waves at shock transition zone. However, such preacceleration process seems to be effective only at the supercritical shocks with Ms > ~ 2.3, implying that further studies should be done to explain radio relics with weaker shocks. In this talk, we present the results obtained by fully kinetic 2D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, which include pre-existing suprathermal electrons possibly ejected from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or produced by previous episodes of turbulence/shocks. The simulations indicate that the pre-existing electrons enhance the upstream plasma waves in shocks with Ms < ~ 2.3. However, the wavelength of such waves is not long enough to scatter off suprathermal electrons and energize them to the injection momentum for DSA. Hence, we conclude that preexciting suprathermal electrons alone would not solve the problem of electron acceleration at radio relic shocks.
During the formation of large-scale structures in the universe, shocks with the sonic Mach number Ms <~ 5 are naturally induced by supersonic flow motions of baryonic matter in the intracluster medium (ICM). Cosmic rays (CRs) are expected to be accelerated via diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at these ICM shocks, although the existence of CR protons in the ICM remains to be confirmed through gamma-ray observations. Based on the results obtained from kinetic plasma simulations, we build an analytic DSA model for weak, quasi-parallel shocks in the test-particle regime. With our DSA model, the CR acceleration efficiency ranges ~ 0.001 - 0.02 in supercritical quasi-parallel shocks with sonic Mach number Ms ~ 2.25 - 5, and the acceleration would be negligible in subcritical shocks wth Ms <~ 2.25. Adopting our DSA model, we estimate gamma-ray and neutrino emissions from clusters of galaxies by performing cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. The estimated gamma-ray flux is below the Fermi-LAT upper limit. In addition, the possible neutrino emission due to the decay of charged pions in galaxy clusters would be about <~ 1% of the atmospheric neutrino intensity in the energy range of <~ 100 GeV. In this talk, we will discuss the implication of our results.

In a laser-plasma wakefield accelerator, the ponderomotive force of an ultrashort high intensity laser pulse excites a longitudinal wave or plasma bubble in a way similar to the excitation of a wake wave behind a boat as it propagates on the water surface. Electric fields inside the plasma bubble can be several orders of magnitude higher than those available in conventional RF-based particle accelerator facilities which are limited by material breakdown. Therefore, if an electron bunch is properly phase-locked with the bubble's acceleration field, it can gain relativistic energies within an extremely short distance. Here, in the bubble regime we show the generation of stable and reproducible sub GeV, and GeV-class electron beams. Supported by three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, our experimental results show the highest acceleration gradients produced so far. Simulations suggested that the plasma bubble elongation should be minimized in order to achieve higher electron beam energies.
In order to analyze the effects of ground vibration caused by underground blasting having an effect on structure, the particle velocity and acceleration are calculated by using DYNPAK program. The DYNPAK program analyzes nonlinear transient dynamic problem and adopts the very popular and easily implemented, explicit, central difference scheme. In this program, the material behavior is assumed to be elasto-viscoplastic. Using the particle acceleration history, modal analysis method is applied to the forced vibration response of multiple-degree-of-freedom(MDOF) systems using unclupled equations of motion expressed in terms of the system's natural circular frequencies and modal damping factors. AS a means of evaluating the vibration behavior of building structure subjected to underground blasting, the time response of the displacements relative to the ground of five-story building is determined. It is concluded that the amount of explosives consumed per round, the location of structure, the properties of rock medium, the stiffness fo structure, etc. act on the important factors influencing on the safety of building and that the response of a structure subjected to a forced excitation can usually be obtained with reasonable accuracy by the modal analysis of only a few mode of the lower frequencies of the system.

A two-dimensional Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulation of a Hall thruster is presented. The thruster is being developed for orbit transfer and correction of a small satellite. Preliminary investigation of the simulation result finds well separated acceleration and ionization layers. The simulation further shows that collisional ionization of the xenon neutrals allows sufficient acceleration of the ionized plasmas that is adequate for the intended correction and transfer of small satellite orbits. Anticipated performance of the thruster based upon the present results will be calculated.
In this talk we outline the current understanding of solar flares, mainly focusing on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes. A flare causes plasma heating, mass ejection, and particle acceleration which generates high-energy particles. The key physical processes producing a flare are: the emergence of magnetic field from the solar interior to the solar atmosphere (flux emergence), formation of current-concentrated areas (current sheets) in the corona, and magnetic reconnection proceeding in a current sheet to cause shock heating, mass ejection, and particle acceleration. A flare starts with the dissipation of electric currents in the corona, followed by various dynamic processes that affect lower atmosphere such as the chromosphere and photosphere. In order to understand the physical mechanism for producing a flare, theoretical modeling has been develops, where numerical simulation is a strong tool in that it can reproduce the time-dependent, nonlinear evolution of a flare. In this talk we review various models of a flare proposed so far, explaining key features of individual models. We introduce the general properties of flares by referring observational results, then discuss the processes of energy build-up, release, and transport, all of which are responsible for a flare. We will come to a concluding viewpoint that flares are the manifestation of the recovering and ejecting processes of a global magnetic flux tube in the solar atmosphere, which has been disrupted via interaction with convective plasma while rising through the convection zone.

This study presents a prognostic technique for the damage state of a ball bearing. A stochastic bearing fatigue defect-propagation model is applied to estimate the damage progression rate. The damage state and the time to failure are computed by using RMS data from noisy acceleration signals. The parameters of the stochastic defect-propagation model are identified by conducting a series of run-to-failure tests for ball bearings. A regularized particle filter is applied to predict the damage progression rate and update the degradation state based on the acceleration RMS data. The future damage state is predicted based on the most recently measured data and the previously predicted damage state. The developed method was validated by comparing the prognostic results and the test data.
