The purpose of this study is to understand what kind of effects a local residents’ participation on a local environmental problem has on the Environmental consciousness of the resident, and on the local community. I (researcher) employed qualitative research methods on the residents' environmental movement, which claimed to preserve the Sung Mi Mountain from the Seoul City Hall's plan of the water reservoir construction. I tried to understand the participation motivation and participating actions, and also the changes and effects the participation brought at both a personal, and community level. The data were gathered by means of in-depth interview with the local residents and unstructured questionnaire. At first, through the residents' environmental movement, the participants acquired a growth in environmental consciousness. For example, they obtained better understanding of the environment, change of attitude to environment, and participation function. Secondly, it is meaningful that a local tie intervened by the environment, enforced self-governing, and shows how community sentiment plays an important role for local community organization. Moreover, the environmental movement contributed to developing a ‘culture for participation’. In conclusion, participating in a local environmental problem can be an integration of learning and practice and also leads to reflective thinking about the relationship not only between human beings and nature, but also among human beings. In addition, it can buildup a systemic cooperation for local problem-solving and the ability to make an alternative culture in the community. These are the significances of the local environmental problem-participation on the environmental education.
Residents Participation in Environmental Problems is essential for achieving better environmental. But, the Residents Participation in Korea is lack of popularity and still be situated in the level of only problem raises and protests afterwards. Public Environmental Education necessary for Residents Participation, is not a pratical education, because the education in the government side be performed mostly for the government employees and the environmental experts. To encourage the Residents Participation in Environmental Problems, the decision procedure of the environmental policies should by opened, and pratical movements. To enhance the Public Environmental Education, the NGOs' programs and mass-media campaign for environment should be enlarged and supported by the government.
The Local Agenda21 is an action program of local dimension to realize of sustainable development. The citizen participation is prime issues and very important f3r successful practice of the Local Agenda21. The purpose of this research is to analyze the citizen participation problem and to suggest the improvement plan at the advanced course of the Local Agenda21. The research results are as follows; 1. The recognize of citizen about the Local Agenda21 is very low. Namely, the citizen of about 50% answered not to know about the Local Agenda21, 2. However, citizens showed the participation opinion to be very active by simple explanation about the Local Agenda21. 3. Also, citizens showed the result to be very affirmative in the environment problem consciousness investigation. Namely, citizens were recognizing the environment problem as the problem of the society synergic.
The purpose of this study is to find out educational effect of school environmental education utilized school eco-audit. The result of the study is as followings. First, environmental education program based on school eco-audit was developed. Environmental education program was applied school environmental education. According to developed program, students surveyed environmental problem of school and drove to solution of environmental problem. Second, after environmental education, students became to recognize the fact we are responsible for the environmental problem and also affect the solution of it too much. Also, result showed that will to save energy and resource get higher. In conclusion, school eco-audit is effective cultivation of positive attitude for solution and responsibility of environmental problem. Therefore school eco-audit have to introduce school environmental education because school eco-audit derive participation for solution of environmental problem and learning of decision-making.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of water environmental program using PBL on pro-environmental behavior for 4th graders in elementary school. The results of this study are as follows. First, the experimental group is more effective in promoting the pro-environmental attitude compared with the control group. Second, the experimental group is more effective in promoting the pro-environmental behavior compared with the control group. Third, the experimental group is not more effective in promoting the pro-environmental knowledge compared with the control group. Fourth, students are concerned and interested in the environment and environmental problems of the daily-life. And, they presented positive attitude and active participation toward environmental preservation. So, the process of PBL using water environmental program showed that it promotes active learning participation and various action. In conclusion, the environmental education program through PBL program has a positive effect on pro-environmental attitudes and behavior of elementary school students. It is demanded that more intensive research on this study should be done, linking with teaching and learning method, as a follow-up activity.
The international environmental activity and environmental education began in 1970's. Environmental education in Korea was emphasized since the Forth National Curriculum. The Environmental Curriculum was regarded as one of the most important part in the Sixth National Curriculum in Korea. Environment-related reference texts of Elementary school were already developed. Soon, 'Environment' of middle school and 'Environmental Science' of high school will be developed. The purpose of this study were to analyse environment-related texts in the Fifth National Curriculum and to measure how much environmental education has achieved. As a environmental text for regular class, selected the environmental part in 'Science Part 1' and as environment-related reference text, 'Survival and Environment'. The environmental part of 'Science Part 1' was unit [Life and Environment]. According to the analysis of objectives, most of unit objectives were not stated in a detailed and precise manner. When the goals of environmental education were divided into four fields as follows, knowledge and information, skill, thinking and attitude, behavior and participation, unit objectives were mostly emphasized on knowledge and information of environment, exactly 44.5% of unit objectives and 89.6% of subunit objectives. The degree of relationship between unit objectives and contents was low. All the Check up-problems were about knowledge and information of environment. Environment-related reference text, 'Survival and Environment' was the only reference text for high school students in Korea and was organized in the form of the regular curriculum text. It was developed in Korean Education Development, Center with support of Korean Environmental Ministry in 1990. According to the analysis of 'Survival and Environment', the objectives of units and subunits were less stressed on knowledge and information than those of unit [Life and Environment] in the environmental part of 'Science Part 1' On the other hand, they were a little more stressed on skill, thinking and attitude, behavior and participation. And fifteen of all the seventy subunit objectives were not related with contents. In organization, this text included Thinking problems, Experiments and Inquiries, Reading, Developed studies and Check up-problem etc. It was remarkable that Inquiries leaded to individual activities and Developed studies to group discussions or individual inquiries. And as Check-up problems were presented as a form of activities, students could achieve many various objectives at the same time by solving one problem. To measure the achievement of environmental education by questionnaire, 497 high school students in total were selected from five different schools. Scores in subtest 'behavior and participation' and subtest 'thinking and attitudes' were 13.19 and 18.18, respectively. Actually, most students had a positive thinkings and attitudes in their hearts about environmental problems, but many of them actually did not take actions to solve environmental problems and to protect environment. Scores in subtest 'knowledge and information' and subtest 'skill' were 10.76 and 10.81, respectively. The higher the score students got in 'knowledge and information', the higher the score in 'skill'. It implies that learning of skills is based on learning of knowledges and informations about environment has not always ensured positive thinkings and attitudes or active behaviors and participations to solve environmental problem.
The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of participation environmental UCC(User Created Content) making program on elementary school students' environmental literacy. Through the questionnaires and the analysis of students' outcomes, the effects of environmental literacy in both quality and quantity was verified. By applying computer programs to make environmental UCC to elementary students, helped them increase their environmental knowledge, and got them to recognize the importance of the environment that surrounds them. Students can find a solution to solve environmental problem from their interaction between the environment and themselves. It could also improve students' ability to think positively. From this research, I hope we require to develop possible programs for various kinds of educational activities based on UCC ones, since we already verified the effects of computer programs to make environmental UCC. The programs to make environmental UCC with learners participated is a kind of good model to reflect the learner's need who is a educational user. Or it could be teaching materials to help meet learner's viewpoint. It can also offer learner-oriented and creative learning and which teachers and learners work together to make a good result and that they make a new wave, instead of being teacher-oriented, which teachers force learners to do something. We can have a feeling of achievement through this and we can expect to enhance both our professional ability as a environmental teacher and the quality of lesson.
Throughout the modernization which was dominated by development theory in Korea, land use planning for housing tended to spoil the environment. Numerous studies, however, pointed out the problem of this development-led planning and there was a broader consensus that the past planning was part of the environmental problem of inner city. These observations changed the development-led planning into the environmental friendly development planning. In particular, Seoul Metropolitan Government held the international planning competition to develop 'Sangam' as an environment friendly residential area. With this plan 'Sangam' would be the sustainable residential area with the harmony of nature, human and technology. Furthermore it would be the outset of the long-term plan to develop 'Seoul' as a 'gate-city, an 'information-city' and an 'eco-city'. To do this, it needs especially the planners' and the constructors' constant concerns and efforts as well as the citizen's participation.
The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics and the differences regarding the teaching & learning objectives of Environment textbooks for middle school students with the consideration of the 7th Korean National Curriculum. For this the teaching & teaming objectives of three Environment textbooks currently used categorized according to the domain frame of environmental education in the Report of UNESCO(1980). three Environment textbooks and their teacher's guide books are those printed by three companies(A, B, and C) and Joongahng co.. The five objective categories recommended by UNESCO are awareness, knowledge, attitude, skills and participation and six types of skills by National Curriculum Council of England are communication skills, numeracy skills, study skills, problem-solving skills, personal and social skills and information technology skills. It is showed that'Human and Environment'domain is emphasized roughly in the awareness and the knowledge section without any statement of the participation section, 'Environmental Problems and its Counter-plan'domain in the knowledge and the skills section, 'Environmental Conservation'domain in the skills and the participation section of objectives. It is revealed that the skills section of the teaching 8t learning objectives is mainly involved in 'Environmental Problems and its Counter-plan'domain and'Environmental Conservation' domain. According to the result of the analysis of the connectivity between the Environment Curriculum of the 7th Korean National Curriculum and the Environment textbooks regarding objectives stated in the sub-domain level, it says those are generally appropriate ones. But some objectives are emphasized weakly or not at all in several sub-domains such as'The living environment to keep','The environmental problems of the earth','Making environment pleasant'. It is proposed that the efforts to state objectives in the Environment textbooks evenly are needed to be paid (or the well-balanced teaching & teaming of the Environment subject.
Purpose - Low fertility rate is a serious problem, and this study analyzes factors affecting total fertility rate using panel data from 16 metropolitan cities and provinces in Korea from 2000 to 2022. Design/methodology/approach - Estimating the SAR model considering the weak cross-sectional dependence that exists in variables related to the regional total fertility rate, and using the DKSE estimation method considering the strong cross-sectional dependence. Findings - Estimation results considering weak and strong cross-sectional dependence were similar, confirming the robustness of the results. Female labor force participation rate has a positive effect on total fertility rate, and employment rate has no effect. However, the interaction term is a negative (-) sign. Crude marriage rate has a positive effect on total fertility rate, and apartment price has a slightly positive effect. Environmental factor has no effect, and policy factor has a negative effect. Research implications or Originality - In order for an increase in the female labor force participation rate to lead to an increase in the total fertility rate, qualitative improvements in female employment must be made. Financial investment policies for childbirth must increase their effectiveness. The problem of low fertility rate requires not only population policy but also social, economic, cultural, environmental, and policy conditions to be considered.
