For efficient content-based image retrieval, diverse visual features such as color, texture, and shape have been widely used. In the case of leaf images, further improvement can be achieved based on the following observations. Most plants have unique shape of leaves that consist of one or more blades. Hence, blade-based matching can be more efficient than whole shape-based matching since the number and shape of blades are very effective to filtering out dissimilar leaves. Guaranteeing rotational invariance is critical for matching accuracy. In this paper, we propose a new shape representation, indexing and matching scheme for leaf image retrieval. For leaf shape representation, we generated a distance curve that is a sequence of distances between the leaf’s center and all the contour points. For matching, we developed a blade-based matching algorithm called rotation invariant - partial dynamic time warping (RI-PDTW). To speed up the matching, we suggest two additional techniques: i) priority queue-based pruning of unnecessary blade sequences for rotational invariance, and ii) lower bound-based pruning of unnecessary partial dynamic time warping (PDTW) calculations. We implemented a prototype system on the GEMINI framework [1][2]. Using experimental results, we showed that our scheme achieves excellent performance compared to competitive schemes.
The techniques extract shape descriptors from 3D models and use these descriptors for indices for comparing shape similarities. Most similarity search techniques focus on comparisons of each individual 3D model from databases. However, our similarity search technique can compare not only each individual 3D model, but also partial shape similarities. The partial shape matching technique extends the user's query request by finding similar parts of 3D models and finding 3D models which contain similar parts. We have implemented an experimental partial shape-matching search system for 3D pagoda models, and preliminary experiments show that the system successfully retrieves similar 3D model parts efficiently.

A new method for recognizing and locating partially occluded or overlapped two-dimensional objects regardless of their size, translation, and rotation, is presented. Dominant points approximating occuluding contoures of objects are generated by finding local maxima of smoothed k-cosine function, and then used to guide the contour segment matching procedure. Primitives between the dominant points are produced by projecting the local contours onto the line between the dominant points. Robust classification of primitives. Which is crucial for reliable partial shape matching, is performed using adaptive resonance theory (ART2). The matched primitives having similar scale factors and rotation angles are detected in the hough space to identify the presence of the given model in the object scene. Finally the translation vector is estimated by minimizing the mean squred error of the matched contur segment pairs. This model-based matching algorithm may be used in diveerse factory automation applications since models can be added or changed simply by training ART2 adaptively without modifying the matching algorithm.
The shape of an object plays a very important role in pattern analysis and classification. Roughly, the researches on this topic can be classified into three fields, i.e. (i) edge detection, (ii) dominant points extraction, and (iii) shape recognition and classification. Many works have been done in these three fields. However, it is very seldom to see the research that discusses the connection relationship of objects. This problem is very important in robot assembly systems. Therefore, here we focus on this problem and discuss how to recover the connection relationship of planar objects. Our method is based on the partial curve identification algorithm. The experiment results show the efficiency and validity of this method.
For music score recognition, several approaches have been proposed including shape matching, statistical methods, neural network based methods and structural methods. In this paper, we deal with recognition for low resolution images which are captured by the digital camera of a mobile phone. Considerable distortions are included in these low resolution images, so when existing technology is used, many problems appear. First, captured images are not stable in the sense that they contain lots of distortions or non-uniform illumination changes. Therefore, notes or symbols in the music score are damaged and recognition process gets difficult. This paper presents recognition technology to overcome these problems. First, musical note to head, stick, tail part are separated. Then template matching on head part of musical note, and remainder part is applied. Experimental results show nearly 100% recognition rate for music scores with single musical notes.

In this paper, we propose a novel 2-D partial matching algorithm based on model-based stochastic analysis of feature correspondences in a relation vector space, which is quite robust to shape variations as well as invariant to geometric transformations. We represent an object using the ARG (Attributed Relational Graph) model with features of a set of relation vectors. In addition, we statistically model the partial occlusion or noise as the distortion of the relation vector distribution in the relation vector space. Our partial matching algorithm consists of two-phases. First, a finite number of candidate sets areselected by using logical constraint embedding local and structural consistency Second, the feature loss detection is done iteratively by error detection and voting scheme thorough the error analysis of relation vector space. Experimental results on real images demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is quite robust to noise and localize target objects correctly even inseverely noisy and occluded scenes.
Evaluation of shape similarity for 3D models is essential in many areas - medicine, mechanical engineering, molecular biology, etc. Moreover, as 3D models are commonly used on the Web, many researches have been made on the classification and retrieval of 3D models. In this paper, we describe methods for 3D shape representation and major concepts of similarity evaluation, and analyze the key features of recent researches for shape comparison after classifying them into four categories including multi-resolution, topology, 2D image, and statistics based methods. In addition, we evaluated the performance of the reviewed methods by the selected criteria such as uniqueness, robustness, invariance, multi-resolution, efficiency, and comparison scope. Multi-resolution based methods have resulted in decreased computation time for comparison and increased preprocessing time. The methods using geometric and topological information were able to compare more various types of models and were robust to partial shape comparison. 2D image based methods incurred overheads in time and space complexity. Statistics based methods allowed for shape comparison without pose-normalization and showed robustness against affine transformations and noise.

In this paper, we proposed multi-resolution search method based on edge information that can be search a partial input pattern and detect a difference of minute shape information in effectively. The proposed method utilizes the small shape differences among objects as much as possible to distinguish an object from similar shaped objects. It consists of the GHT based candidate generation and top-down candidate verfication. The test results show that it can retrieve the correct object even with a part of object in reasonable time.
The plastic arts is used when designers draw inspirations to create fashion design. The author referred to fashion magazines for designing ideas of Mondrian's geometrical abstract painting in practical applications used by designers in Paris, Italy, London and New York during the 10-year period(1991-2000). The collections of data were analyzed as following: ◇ Fashion Designing Idea 1. Matching Idea The art is reproduced in the design as how it is with no transformation. First, the painting's complete figure is reproduced on the entire or parts of clothing. Second, the painting's partial figure is reproduced on the entire or parts of clothing. 2. Contrasting Ideas The composition elements in Mondrian's geometrical abstract painting, for example, structures of shapes, vertical and horizontal lines and different colors are applied in the design. First, one particular shape in painting is transformed into different shape of square, circle or triangle and reproduced in designing. Second, one particular shape in painting is disassembled and then reshaped into different form in reproduction. Third, additional lines are put in to create different look from the original painting. Forth, existing lines are extended over the boundary to create different look from the original painting. Fifth, achromatic colors: black and white, and three basic colors: red, blue and yellow in the original painting are modified into different shades or color scheme is increased in broad range.
For an effective pre-treatment process of a face input image, it is necessary to detect each of face components, calculate the face area, and estimate the rotary angle of the face. A proposed method of this study can estimate an robust result under such renditions as some different levels of illumination, variable fate sizes, fate rotation angels, and background color similar to skin color of the face. The first step of the proposed method detects the estimated face area that can be calculated by both adapted skin color Information of the band-wide HSV color coordinate converted from RGB coordinate, and skin color Information using histogram. Using the results of the former processes, we can detect a lip area within an estimated face area. After estimating a rotary angle slope of the lip area along the X axis, the method determines the face shape based on face information. After detecting eyes in face area by matching a partial template which is made with both eyes, we can estimate Y axis rotary angle by calculating the eye´s locations in three dimensional space in the reference of the face area. As a result of the experiment on various face images, the effectuality of proposed algorithm was verified.
