  • To secure basic data for intake port design, effects of a port masking on the part load performance were investigated in a 4 valve SI engine. For this purpose, 9 kinds of masking, which have different shapes and masking ratio, are applied to the engine intake system. The characteristics of the performance were estimated through mixture response test at various engine load and speed. The results show that NOx emission, one of indexes for stratification, increases considerably in spite of retarded spark timing due to the stratification which is caused by unequal flow distribution between the two intake ports. The mechanism of stratification by masking is different from axial stratification and the fuel entering through masked port plays a very important role in this stratification process. In conclusion, the port masking method could be easily applied to engine intake system and be very effective for inducing the stratified charging without the change of port design.

  • Experiments were carried out to evaluate performance of the cold air distribution systems with an ice storage tank in test room. Cold air distribution systems provide primary air for comfort conditioning or process cooling at coil discharge temperatures$4^{\circ}C$ to$11^{\circ}C$. The application of a cold air distribution system allows for the downsizing of air distribution equipment and central plant equipment when ice storage tank is used. The benefit of a cold air distribution system include a decrease in the floor-to-floor height, increase floor space, reduced building capital costs, reduced energy use and demand. The use of cold air distribution can result in the most cost effective system and is currently being implemented world wise as the new standard in air conditioning systems. In this study, the cold air distribution system is compared with the general ice storage system. Under the same cooling load conditions, experimental results show that the supply air volume of cold air distribution system decrease 38%, and decrease 45% flow rate of brine for the general ice storage system.

  • In the previous paper, authors proposed the unified equivalent frame method (UEFM) for the lateral behavior analysis of the flat plate structure subjected to the combined gravity and lateral loads, in which the rotations of torsional members were distributed to the equivalent column and the equivalent slab according to the relative ratio of gravity and lateral loads. In this paper, the lateral behavior of the multi-span flat plate structures under various levels of combined gravity and lateral loads were analyzed by the proposed UEFM, which were compared with test results as well as those estimated by existing models. In addition, to consider the stiffness degradation of the flat plate system after cracking, the stiffness reduction factors for torsional members were derived from the test results of the interior and exterior slab-column connection specimens, based on which the simplified nonlinear push-over analysis method for flat plate structures was proposed. The simplified nonlinear analysis method provided good agreements with test results and is considered to be very useful for the practical design of the flat plate structures under the combined gravity and lateral loads.

  • MEMS technology applying to the sensors and micro-electro devices is complete system. These microsystems are made by variable processes. Especially, the mentallization process has very important functions to transfer the power operating the sensor and signal induced from sensor part. But in the structures of MEMS the local stress concentration and deformation are often yielded by an irregular geometrical shape and different constraint. Therefore, this paper studies the effect of supporting type and thickness ratio about thin film of the substrate on the residual stress variation when the thermal loads is applied to the multi-layer thin film fabricated by metallization process. Specimens were made from several materials such as Al, Au and Cu. Then, uniform thermal load was applied, repeatedly. The residual stress was measured by FE Analysis and nano-indentation method using AFM. Generally, the specimen made of Al induced the larger residual stress than that of made of other materials. Specimen made of Cu and Au having the low thermal expansion coefficient induces the minimum residual stress. Similarly, the lowest indentation length was measured by nano-indentation method in the Si/Au/Cu specimen. Particularly, clusters are created in the specimen made of Cu by thermal load and the indentation length became increasingly large by cluster formation.

  • Preform design techniques have been investigated to reduce die wear and forming load and to improve material flow, filling ratio, etc. In hot forging processes, a thin deformed part of a workpiece, known as a flash, is formed in the narrow gap between the upper and lower tools. Although designers make tools that generate a flash intentionally in order to improve flow properties, excessive flash increases die wear and forming load. Therefore, it is necessary to make a preform shape that can reduce the excessive flash without changing flow properties. In this paper, a new preform design technique is proposed to reduce the excessive flash in a metal forging process. After a finite element simulation of the process is carried out with an initial billet, the flow of material in the flash region is traced from the final shape to the initial billet. The region belonging to the flash is then easily found in the initial billet. The finite element simulation is then carried out again with the modified billet from which the selected region has been removed. In several iterations of this technique, the optimal preform shape that minimizes the amount of flash without changing the forgeability can be obtained.

  • The objective of this study is to analysis the mechanical characteristics on the geometric nonlinear behavior of radial cable roof systems for long span retractable cable roof structures. The retractable roof is designed as a full control system to overcome extreme outdoor environments such as extreme hot or cold weather, strong wind or sunlight, and the cable roof greatly can reduce roof weight compared to other rigid structural system. A retractable cable roof system is a type of structures in which the part of entire roof can be opened and closed. The radial cable roof is an effective structural system for large span retractable roofs, the outer perimeter of the roof is a fixed membrane roof and the middle part is a roof that can be opened and closed. The double arrangement cables of a radial cable truss roof system with reverse curvature works more effectively as a load bearing cables, the cable system can carry vertical load in up and downward direction. In this paper, to analyze the mechanical characteristics of a radial cable roof system with central posts, the authors will investigate the tensile forces of bearing cables, stabilized cables, ring cables, and the deflection of roof according to the height of the post or hub that affects the sag ratio of cable truss. The tensile forces of the cables and the deflection of the roof are compared for the cases when the retractable roof is closed and opened.

  • This paper contains a consistent couple-stress theory to capture size effects in Euler-Bernoulli nano-beams made of three-directional functionally graded materials (TDFGMs). These models can degenerate into the classical models if the material length scale parameter is taken to be zero. In this theory, the couple-stress tensor is skew-symmetric and energy conjugate to the skew-symmetric part of the rotation gradients as the curvature tensor. The material properties except Poisson's ratio are assumed to be graded in all three axial, thickness and width directions, which it can vary according to an arbitrary function. The governing equations are obtained using the concept of minimum potential energy. Generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) is used to solve the governing equations for various boundary conditions to obtain the natural frequencies of TDFG nano-beam. At the end, some numerical results are performed to investigate some effective parameter on buckling load. In this theory the couple-stress tensor is skew-symmetric and energy conjugate to the skew-symmetric part of the rotation gradients as the curvature tensor.

  • The objective of this study is to measure rim surface adhesion and to calculate motion resistance produced by the adhesion acting on the rim section of a circular wheel under sticky soil condition. The mechanisms of generating motion resistance by the adhesion on a circular wheel were analyzed through wheel motion. Experiments were conducted in an indoor soil bin that contains loam soil. A circular steel wheel was used for experiments. A part of the wheel rim was cut off, and transducers which can measure normal and tangential forces were installed in this section. Calculated motion resistance at a part of the rim section was superposed for one wheel rotation as motion resistance produced by the rim surface adhesion. The motion resistance increased with increasing the dynamic load. Ratio of the motion resistance to total motion resistance measured by an axis transducer was about 23 to 46 % in this study.

  • Cold rolled and high strength steel were used for vehicle bodys to satisfy environmental regulation and improve fuel ratio. This paper presented a method far determining the fatigue life of cold rolled steel sheet EZNCEN and high strength steel sheet HS40R spot weldment used in vehicles. We can estimate the fatigue life of the spot weldments from the MSC/FATIGUE using the finite element method. The maximum load is found in the nugget part of both surfaces. The cold rolled steel and the high strength steel showed the maximum stress 746MPa and 730MPa in the effective nugget part when the weld current was 8KA and 7KA, respectively. Also the some weld current of the cold rolled steel and high strength steel is applied, the fatigue life of high strength steel is obtained about four times longer than the cold rolled steel.

  • To identify the inflow and outflow characteristics of allchthonous organic matters and examine the change of allochthonous organic matter load pattern due to the climate change, we investigated the temporal variations of DOC and POC concentrations within inflow water and dam discharge water and spatio-temporal distribution of POM within the lake water in Lake Soyang which is the largest dam reservoir in Korea in 2006. Most of allochthonous DOC flowed into the lake water during initial rain and was not affected by the amount of precipitation, whereas most of allochthonous POC flowed into during concentrated heavy rain and the concentration of POC was significantly associated with the amount of inflow water and precipitation. Calculated annual allochthonous organic matter loads in Lake Soyang from 2003 to 2006 using the regression equation between the amount of inflow water and the concentration of POC indicate allochthonous organic matter loads are mainly affected by total influx and extreme influx of inflow water. The spatio-temporal distribution of POM indicated allochthonous organic matter of inflow river during flood period in July transported from upper part to middle and lower part of the lake a month later respectively along the middle layer of water column in Lake Soyang.
