  • Since JiuZhang SuanShu(九章算術), the basic field of the traditional mathemtics in Eastern Asia is the field of rational numbers and hence irrational solutions of equations should be replaced by rational approximations. Thus approximate solutions of equations became a very important subject in theory of equations. We first investigate the history of approximate solutions in Chinese sources and then compare them with those in Chosun mathematics. The theory of approximate solutions in Chosun has been established in SanHakWonBon(算學原本) written by Park Yul(1621 - 1668) and JuSeoGwanGyun(籌書管見, 1718) by Cho Tae Gu(趙泰耉, 1660-1723). We show that unlike the Chinese counterpart, Park and Cho were concerned with errors of approximate solutions and tried to find better approximate solutions.

  • 1. Objecrives Although Lee Je-Ma emphasized it is important to be aware of our own Nature & Emotion(性情) and control them properly, there is few case report about Taeyangin focused on their psychological sides. This report is about a Taeyangin patient who had Hae Yuk and Yul Gyuk syndrome caused by her stress from the work place and relationship with her seniors 2. Methods We observed the female patient had hospitalized in the Oriental Hospital of Dongguk University more than twice has been followed up for the last one year. We prescripted Mi-hoo-teung-shik-chang Tang as her physical symptom. The improvement of her physical conditions were checked through her sleep, meal, menstruation, stool and urine. And MMPI has been tested three times for the last one year to analyze her psychological progress. 3. Results and Conclusions Working in a group can cause hard stress for Taeyangin who is not good at adjusting themselves to whatever environment they are in. Mi-hoo-teung-shik-chang Tang could improve Taeyangin's physical conditions such as Hae Yuk, Yul Gyuk, insomnia, nausea, anorexia and hypouresis. But as her psychological aspect, she was getting more anxious, depressed and avoiding contact with others due to the stress. It is necessary to rake care of patients' psychological sides as well as physical conditions through managing their Nature & Emotion(性情).

  • We have analyzed the content of the Korean stone star chart. Ch'on-Sang-Yul-Cha-Bun-Ya-Ji-Do(here-after Ch'on-Sang-Do). In the star map we have found 1468 stars, 4 more than the Chinese star catalog Bo-Chun-Ga. The four extra stars form a constellation, Jong Dae Boo. The map projection law used in the star chart is found to be the polar equtorial and equidistance projection. The linear distance of an object on Ch'on-Sang-Do from the center is linearly proportional to the north polar angular distance. We have found from a statistical analysis that most stars with declination lower than 50 are at positions representing the epoch of around the first century. On the other hand, stars near the north pole with declination higher than 50 are at the epoch of about 1300, which is close to the time the chart was engraved. This implies that the original Ko-Gu-Rye Dynasty's star chart has been revised by astronomers of Cho-Sun Dynasty. We have also shown that stars on Ch'on-Sang-Do are engraved in such a way that their area is linearly proportional to the visual magnitude.

  • A thysanopteran pest pest was collected from the damaged leaves of Fuyu persimmon (Diospyrosi kaki) at Changwon, Gyeongnam province in June, 2000. The thrips was identified as Japanese gall-forming thrips, Ponticulothrips diospyrosi(Phlaeothripidae). which is newly recorded in Korea. Brief morphological and ecological characters, damage symptoms, and distribution in Gyeongnam province were provided.
