  • In this study, an electronically steerable parasitic array radiator (ESPAR) antenna via analog radio frequency (RF) switches for a single RF chain MIMO system is presented. The proposed antenna elements are spaced at ${\lambda}/64$, and the antenna size is miniaturized via a dielectric radome. The optimum reactance load value is calculated via the beamforming load search algorithm. A switch simplifies the design and implementation of the reactance loads and does not require additional complex antenna matching circuits. The measured impedance bandwidth of the proposed ESPAR antenna is 1,500 MHz (1.75 GHz-3.25 GHz). The proposed antenna exhibits a beam pattern that is reconfigurable at 2.48 GHz due to changes in the reactance value, and the measured peak antenna gain is 4.8 dBi. The reception performance is measured by using a $4{\times}4$ BPSK signal. The measured average SNR is 17 dB when using the proposed ESPAR antenna as a transmitter, and the average SNR is 16.7 dB when using a four-conventional monopole antenna.

  • This paper presents a printed, wideband folded monopole antenna for laptop and tablet computer applications. The proposed antenna is designed to cover bandwidth(2.3~10.6 GHz) of Bluetooth, WiMAX, and UWB system by using the printed folded monopole antenna having asymmetrical line width coupling with a parasitic inverted- L element. Also, wireless LAN band(5.15~5.85 GHz) which interferes with UWB system is rejected by inserting half-wavelength open stub in the folded monopole antenna. -10 dB bandwidth of the fabricated wideband antenna is 2.27~10.6 GHz (4.7:1) and -10 dB band-rejected bandwidth is measured as 700 MHz(5.15~5.85 GHz, 12.72 %). The gain and efficiency of the antenna except for the rejected band are higher than 3.93 dBi and 91.89 % and are measured as -2 dBi and 14.65 % at 5.5 GHz which is band-rejected frequency. The size of the antenna is suitable to install for small space of tablet and laptop computers as 12.75(1 ${\lambda}$/10)${\times}$12(1 ${\lambda}$/11) $mm^2$(${\lambda}$ is free space wavelength at 2.3 GHz). Therefore, we verified that the designed antenna is appropriate for wideband antenna of tablet and laptop PC applications.

  • In this paper, the wide-band monopole antenna with a parasitic element on the ground plane for application in Cellular, GSM and RFID mobile terminals such as the mobile phone or Personal Digital Assistant(PDA) phone is presented. The VSWR of the designed antenna is 2:1 over the frequency range of 820 MHz to 1040 MHz(bandwidth of 23.6 %). Therefore, the designed antenna can provide wide bandwidth covering the Cellular(824 MHz~894 MHz), RFID(908.5 MHz~914 MHz) and GSM(Tx:880 MHz~915 MHz, Rx:925 MHz~960 MHz). The radiation characteristics of the fabricated antenna were also studied. According to the measured radiation patterns, the maximum gains at 859 MHz and 911.25 MHz(center frequencies of the Cellualr and RFID bands) are -0.7 dBi and 0.16 dBi, respectively. The measured maximum gains of GSM bands are -0.48 dBi(897.5 MHz, the center frequency of Tx) and 1.69 dBi(942.5 MHz, the center frequency of Rx).

  • A wearable antenna made using conductive tape on paper is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna is composed of a half-wavelength conducting dipole strip and a parasitic conducting strip on the A4 copy paper. The antenna is fed at the center of the dipole strip by an SMA connector. The configuration of the proposed antenna changes according to the origami method. Therefore the radiation patterns of the antenna vary according to whether or not the paper is folded. This approach solves the problem that the reception ratio of the signal decreases because of null points in the antenna radiation pattern. The reflection coefficient and the radiation pattern of the proposed antenna at 900 MHz are evaluated using an EM simulation and measurements. It was shown that the proposed paper antenna has reconfigurable characteristics at 900 MHz when utilizing the origami method.

  • This paper proposes a single-RF MIMO receiver that adopts a beam-switching antenna (BSA) instead of a conventional array antenna. The beauty of the proposed single-RF MIMO receiver with BSA is that it can be deployed in a very small physical space while achieving a full spatial multiplexing gain. Our analysis has revealed that the use of a BSA inevitably results in the spectrum spreading effect at the RF output, which in turn causes an SNR decrease and adjacent channel interference (ACI). Two novel receiver techniques are proposed to mitigate the issues of redundant sub-band suppression and ACI avoidance. Numerical analysis results verify the performance improvement from the proposed receiver techniques.

  • A microstrip patch antenna with B-WLL applications is designed and manufactured. To make a array antenna the size of patch antenna was miniaturized. A broad band is obtained by two additional parasitic elements, which are closely located to the main patch. The bandwidth of the manufactured antenna is 15% at the center frequency of 26.8 GHz. Radiation patterns are measured over a wide bandwidth.

  • This paper proposes the design of microstrip patch antennas for dual-band polarization adjustment. The antenna has a multi-layer structure for dual-band operation, and each layer contains a resonating patch with surrounding strips separated into two parts. The antenna polarization is adjusted by varying the separated positions of the strips, while fixing other design parameters. To demonstrate the feasibility, an antenna sample with right-hand circular polarization is fabricated, and its antenna characteristics are measured in a full anechoic chamber. The operating principle of polarization adjustment in the dual frequency bands is also verified by observing near electromagnetic fields and the magnetic surface current density around the antenna.

  • This paper proposes four-ring slot resonator-based MIMO antennas of 75×150 mm2 without and with CSRR structures in the sub-6-GHz range. These orthogonal-fed antennas have shown diverse characteristics with dual polarization. L-shaped parasitic structures have increased the isolation (i.e., >40 dB) in the single-element antenna over the band of 3.4 GHz-3.8 GHz. A set of three CSRR structures in the MIMO antenna reduced the coupling between antenna ports placed in an inline arrangement and enhanced the isolation from 12 dB to 20 dB and the diversity characteristics. The S-parameters of both MIMO antennas are measured and used to evaluate MIMO parameters like ECC, TARC, MEG, and channel capacity loss. The simulation results show the variations in the gain and directivity on exciting linear and dual polarizations. The diversity performance of the reported MIMO antennas is suitable for 5G applications.

  • In this paper, an internal integrated microstrop patch for PCS handset is designed. To increase the bandwidth of microstrip patch antenna, a configuration of stacked type using parasitic element is used. Furthermore, to reduce the size of microstirip patch antenna, the main radiator in the substrate is shorted to the ground plane using five shorting-posts while three parasitic elements on the superstrate are also shorted to the ground plane using two shorting-posts respectively. The antenna bandwidth and radiation characteristics are calculated by HFSS 7.0 software, and compared with the experimental results. Experimental results show that the return loss is less than -10dB over the band of 1766MHz to 1900 MHz(134MHz) and the size of the fabricated microstrip patch antenna are $23\times20\times6.35mm$.

  • In this paper, a GPS antenna is designed by using metal film which can be attached on the case of battery without additional space for antenna in GPS band operation. The proposed metal film has a half-wavelength slot radiator. The slot radiator is fed by th electromagnetic field coupled from the GSM850/PCS band antenna.
