This study provides a simplified method for the evaluation of shear lag stress in rectangular box T-joints. The occurrence of shear lag phenomenon in the box T-joint generates stress concentration localized at both web-flange junctions of the beam, which leads to cracking or failure in the weld region of the joint. To prevent such critical circumstance, peak stress at the weld region is required to be checked during a preliminary design stage. In this paper, the shear lag stresses in the T-joints were evaluated using least-work solution in which the longitudinal displacements of the beam flange and web were presumed. The evaluation process considered particularly the effect of column flange flexibility, which was represented by an axial spring model, on the shear lag stress distribution. A simplified method for stress evaluation was provided to avoid solving complex mathematical problems using a stress modification factor βs from a parametric study. The results showed that the proposed method was valid for predicting the shear lag stress in the box T-joints manually, as well compared with finite element results. The results are further summarized, discussed, and clarified that more flexible column flange caused higher stress concentration.

In this paper, a new procedure is proposed to accomplish the primary plus secondary stress(P+Q) at the 'structural element' instead of 'transition element'. For the P+Q evaluation, the calculated stresses by FEA are linearized along a stress classification line to extract the stress category, then the stress intensity is calculated to compare with the $3S_{m}$ limit. Also, in this paper, the 'design by analysis' criteria, adopted fundamental concepts and a new approach to calculate $K_{e}$ factors are explained. The new procedure combined with 3-D FEA has been applied to motor operated valve in order to the over conservatism and the rack of margin. The evaluation results show a good applicability and can be utilized for fatigue life evaluation by using P+Q.
Since risers have to be operated without being replaced during the design life time after installation, fatigue evaluation as well as strength analysis should be performed. The fatigue life of the riser is known to be dominantly influenced by wave loading and vortex induced vibration (VIV) phenomena. The fatigue life evaluation method and the behavior characteristics of the riser by the wave have been done a lot. Even though the VIV is an important source of fatigue damage for SCR, the evaluation method and behavior characteristics by VIV have not been studied relatively. Most of the S / W for calculating VIV fatigue are a semi-empirical model based on various theoretical models and experiments. For better understanding of VIV response, it is necessary to investigate the effect of parameters which affects the analysis result. This paper summarizes the results of parametric study performed to enhance the understanding of relationship between each parameter and fatigue analysis result.
The primary objectives of this research are to investigate the energy factor response of steel moment resisting frame (MRF) systems equipped with fuses subject to ground motions and to develop an energy-based evaluation approach for evaluating the damage-control behavior of the system. First, the energy factor of steel MRF systems with fuses below the resilience threshold is derived utilizing the energy balance equation considering bilinear oscillators with significant post-yielding stiffness ratio, and the effect of structural nonlinearity on the energy factor is investigated by conducting a parametric study covering a wide range of parameters. A practical transformation approach is also proposed to associate the energy factor of steel MRF systems with fuses with classic design spectra based on elasto-plastic systems. Then, the energy balance is extended to structural systems, and an energy-based procedure for damage-control evaluation is proposed and a damage-control index is also derived. The approach is then applied to two types of steel MRF systems with fuses to explore the applicability for quantifying the damage-control behavior. The rationality of the proposed approach and the accuracy for identifying the damage-control behavior are demonstrated by nonlinear static analyses and incremental dynamic analyses utilizing prototype structures.

The TEXAS-V code tuned for TROI-13 was used for analyzing the parametric findings in TROI experiments. The calculations on the melt composition are relatively similar to the TROI experimental results. The water depth effect in TEXAS-V code seems to be consistent with TROI experiments in some degree. The water area effect of TEXAS-V calculations seems not to be harmonious to that in TROI experiments. This seems to indicate that TEXAS-V as 1-dimensional code or as the numerical steam explosion has a limitation on estimating area effect. Thus, TEXAS-V tuned for TROI-13 seems to have an ability to estimate the parametric effect of TROI experiments. The evaluated TEXAS-V was used for estimating the ex-vessel steam explosion load. The calculated explosion pressure and load were about 40 MPa and 75 kPa.sec, which are not much threatening level for containment integrity, but are arguable value for the integrity.
Feature extraction of CASA system uses time continuity and channel similarity and makes correlogram of auditory elements for the use. In case of using feature extraction with cross correlation coefficient for channel similarity, it has much computational complexity in order to display correlation quantitatively. Therefore, this paper suggests feature extraction method using non-parametric correlation coefficient in order to reduce computational complexity when extracting the feature and tests to segregate target speech by CASA system. As a result of measuring SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) for the performance evaluation of target speech segregation, the proposed method shows a slight improvement of 0.14 dB on average over the conventional method.
Toward the development of practical methods for observed data oriented bispectral estimation, an automatic means for determining the smoothing bandwidth of bispectral windows is proposed, that can also provide an associated optimum bispectral estimate of stationary non-Gaussian signals, systematically only from an observed time series datum of finite length. For the conventional non-parametric bispectral estimation, the MSE (mean squared error) of the normalized estimate is reviewed under a certain mixing condition and sufficient data length, mainly from the viewpoint of the inverse relation between its bias and variance with respect to the smoothing bandwidth. Based on the fundamental relation, a systematic method not only for determining the bandwidth, but also for obtaining the optimum bispectral estimate is presented by newly introducing a MSE evaluation index of the estimate only from an observed time series datum of finite length. The effectiveness and fundamental features of the proposed method are illustrated by the basic results of numerical experiments.
The importance of the research on moment-resistant properties of unstiffened tubular joints and the research background are introduced. The performed experimental research on the bending rigidity and capacity of the joints is reported. The emphasis is put on the discussion of the flexural behavior of the joints including sets of geometrical parameters of the joints and several loading combinations. Procedures and results of loading tests on four full size joints in planar KK and X configuration are described in details at first. Mechanical models are proposed to analyze the joint specimens. Three-dimensional nonlinear FE models are established and verified with the experimental results. By comparing the experimental data with the results of the analysis, it is reported reasonable to carry out the structural analysis under the assumption that the joint is fully rigidly connected, and their bending capacities can assure the strength of the members connected under certain limitation. Furthermore, a parametric formula for inplane bengding rigidity of T and Y type tubular joints is proposed on the basis of FE calculation and regression analysis. Compared with test results, it is shown that the parametric formula developed in this paper has good applicability.
In this paper, we describe a method that can recognize gestures and evaluate the degree of the gestures from sequential gesture images by using Gesture Feature Space. The previous popular methods based on HMM and neural network have difficulties in recognizing the degree of gesture even though it can classify gesture into some kinds. However, our proposed method can recognize not only posture but also the degree information of the gestures, such as speed and magnitude by calculating distance among the position vectors substituting input and model images in parametric eigenspace. This method which can be applied in various applications such as intelligent interface systems and surveillance systems is a simple and robust recognition algorithm.
The present work utilizes system identification technique for health monitoring of shear building, wherein Parametric State Space modeling has been adopted. The method requires input excitation to the structure and also output acceleration responses of both undamaged and damaged structure obtained from numerically simulated model. Modal parameters like eigen frequencies and eigen vectors have been extracted from the State Space model after introducing appropriate transformation. Least square technique has been utilized for the evaluation of the stiffness matrix after having obtained the modal matrix for the entire structure. Highly accurate values of stiffness of the structure could be evaluated corresponding to both the undamaged as well as damaged state of a structure, while considering noise in the simulated output response analogous to real time scenario. The damaged floor could also be located very conveniently and accurately by this adopted strategy. This method of damage detection can be applied in case of output acceleration responses recorded by sensors from the actual structure. Further, in case of even limited availability of sensors along the height of a multi-storeyed building, the methodology could yield very accurate information related to structural stiffness.
