  • Critical current densities were measured for a bicrystalline $(Sm_{0.8}Dy_{0.2})Ba_2Cu_3O_7$ film under various magnetic fields $({^{\rightarrow_{H}}}_a)$. The fields were varied from -0.7KOe to +0.7KOe for various orientations with respect to the film surface. The curves of the critical current densities $(J_{cb})\;vs\;{^{\rightarrow_{H}}}_a$ showed the well known butterfly-like hysteretic curves. Our data could be analyzed for the two components of field, which are normal and parallel to the film surface, respectively. We combined the effect of $H_\perp$ deduced from the data for the normal field $(\theta=90^{\circ})$ and the effect of $H_\parallel$ deduced from the data for the almost parallel field $(\theta=2^{\circ})$. Our analyses indicate that $(J_{cb})$ depends on the two components of flux density at the grain boundary. All the experimental data for various ${\theta}s$ fit well to this new formula which was obtained by multiplying the factors deduced from the field dependences of these two components.

  • The Earth's magnetic field acquired from KOMPSAT-1's TAM (Three-Axis Magnetometer) between June 19th and 21st 2000 was analyzed. The TAM, one of the KOMPSAT-1's Attitude and Orbit Control Subsystems, plays an important role in determining and controlling the satellite's attitude. This also can provide new insight on the Earth's magnetic field. By transforming the satellite coordinate from ECI to ECEF, spherical coordinate of total magnetic field was achieved. These data were grouped into dusk (ascending) and dawn (descending) data sets, based on their local magnetic times. This partitioning is essential for performing 1-D WCA (Wavenumber Correlation Analysis). Also, this enhances the perception of external fields in the Kompsat-1's TAM magnetic maps that were compiled according to different local. The dusk and dawn data are processed independently and then merged to produce a total field magnetic anomaly map. To extract static and dynamic components, the 1-D and 2-D WCAs were applied to the sub-parallel neighboring tracks and dawn-dusk data sets. The static components were compared with the IGRF, the global spherical harmonic magnetic field model. The static and dynamic components were analyzed in terms of corefield, external, and crustal signals based on their origins.

  • NI$_2$MnGa-based ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMA) are hoped to be used as robust actuators with high performance and power density, as a replacement of other actuation materials such as thermo-mechanical SMAs and mechanical-electric piezoelectrics. Recently, we have observed significant shape changes under magnetic field application when single- and poly-crystalline forms are used. In the present study, two mechanisms have been proposed to predict the magnetic field-induced shape change as a function of external magnetic field at temperatures below Mr and above Ar. In the case of the field-induced shape change at temperature below M$_{f}$, paired martensite variants are assumed to form by application of magnetic field. The direction of magnetization in martensites formed in austenite matrix is assumed to be parallel to the applied magnetic field in the case of shape change by application at temperature above Af. Various energies has been considered in the shape change under two mechanisms.s.

  • In this paper, new algorithm which calculates transmission coefficient of electromagnetic wave by numerical analysis of scattered field by conductors with arbitrary cross-sections in parallel-plate waveguide is proposed. Proposed algorithm assumes magnetic current distribution on the boundary of scattering conductors, and applies Image theorem to perfect conductor surfaces of parallel-plate waveguide. Integral equations for fictitious magnetic currents on conducting boundary are set up. Magnetic current distributions on conducting boundary are expanded as exponential basis function, and using Galerkin method matrix equations are set wp. To compute matrix elements this method utilizes Fourier transform which is faster than numerical integration. Finally, frequency and incidence-angle characteristic of transmission coefficient are calculated and compared with experimental results.

  • In this paper, we suggested a new antenna structure for the RFID(Radio Frequency IDentification) reader. The conventional RFID reader uses a loop antenna. The central area of a loop antenna shows a low magnetic field strength, especially for the case of a large loop antenna diameter. We proposed a parallel-fed multiple loop antenna. Simulation and measurement were carried out for a single loop antenna, series-fed and parallel-fed multiple loop antennas. Simulation results show that we can obtain 0.40A/m, 0.68A/m, 1.98A/m of magnetic field strengths at the central point of a reader antenna for a single loop antenna, series-fed and parallel-fed multiple loop antennas, respectively. We measured the $79mm{\time}48mm$ tag area averaged induced voltages with applying 20Vp-p same source signals to reader antennas through the resistors. Measured tag area averaged induced voltages at the central point of a reader antennas were 0.76V, 1.45V, 4.04V for a single loop antenna series-fed and parallel-fed multiple loop antennas, respectively. The results show that we can get high induced voltage which can grantee a longer reading distance with a proposed parallel-fed multiple loop antenna.

  • We performed high-resolution three-dimensional global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to study the interaction between the Earth's magnetosphere and a prolonged steady southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) (Bz = -2nT) and slow solar wind. The simulation results show that dayside magnetic reconnection continuously occurs at the subsolar region where the magnetosheath magnetic field is antiparallel to the geomagnetic field. The plasmoid developed on closed plasma sheet field lines. We found that the vortex was generated at the magnetic equator such as (X, Y) = (7.6, 8.9) RE due to the viscous-like interaction, which was strengthened by dayside reconnection. The magnetic field and plasma properties clearly showed quasiperiodic variations with a period of 8-10 min across the vortex. Additionally, double twin parallel vorticity in the polar region was clearly seen. The peak value of the cross-polar cap potential fluctuated between 17 and 20 kV during the tail reconnection.

  • AC losses in multifilamentary HTS tapes can be classified to hysteresis loss, coupling loss, and eddy current loss from the viewpoint of their generation mechanism. From the viewpoint of the major magnetic field component generating them, they can be classified to magnetization loss, transport loss, and total loss. Dividing superconductor to fine filaments, twisting filaments bundle and increasing transverse resistivity are effectively reduce magnetization loss and total loss when the external magnetic field is relatively large. Recently, twisted multifilamentary Bi 2223 tapes with pure silver matrix were fabricated and the reduction of magnetization loss was proved experimentally in the parallel magnetic field to the tape wide face. However, when the perpendicular magnetic field is applied, increasing transverse resistivity is required essentially to reduce the AC losses. The transverse resistivity was increased successfully by the introduction of resistive barrier between filaments.

  • Spin Hamiltonian for the paramagnetic center with a three-fold symmetry and high spin ($S{\geq}2$) multiplicity should contain the fourth order zero-field splitting (ZFS) terms. Electron magnetic resonance transition lines of the center with S = 5/2 are expected to split in a pair when the magnetic field is applied off the principal axes of ZFS, while they are superimposed when the magnetic field is applied parallel to the principal axes of ZFS. In this study we report that the transition lines of $Mn^{2+}$ centers at the three-fold symmetric sites in $LiNbO_3$, chemically equivalent but physically different, split in two due to the nonzero fourth order ZFS term.

  • A series of numerical MHD simulations are performed to investigate the evolution of coronal magnetic fields consisting of two flux ropes and an overlying field. Depending on the directions of the axial current and the axial field, two co-helicity cases and two counter-helicity cases are addressed. In Case 1, in which both the axial currents and the axial fields are parallel, flux rope merging bears a huge flux rope with a large winding number. This flux rope naturally erupts, but the whole evolutionary process is rather slow. In Case 2, in which the axial currents are parallel while the axial fields are antiparallel, a self-closed structure is formed and it drives eruption. In Case 3, in which the axial currents are antiparallel and the axial fields are parallel, each flux rope erupts independently and the presence of the other flux rope does not affect the eruption of one flux rope. In Case 4, in which both the axial currents and the axial fields are antiparallel, interaction of the flux ropes and the overlying field effects a breakout reconnection creating an apple-like CME configuration. Our study tells what kind of eruption mechanisms are involved for different eruption features observed.
